Say anything else you want about RTD, Midnight was a masterpiece. One of my top three Tennant stories.

I enjoyed Midnight alot, but in the end I'd have to say it was more because of no Donna than the story.

...so the Deus Ex Machina in this episode is "we'll blow up the planet so you can't!"

Well, still better than the Doctor being brought back from old age due to magic fairy dust and the laughter of little children.

EDIT: Wait. Now it's Doctor Donna.

Rose -"So there are three Doctors?"
Jack - "I can't tell you what I'm thinking about."
:lol

Double post for Series 4 ending and retrospective.

Journey's End - They gave Rose a happy ending with a Doctor. :D

Getting rid of Donna Noble like that was completely unnecessary. It was cheap and in bad taste. They couldn't find some way to let her leave the series happy? Everybody else gets a happy ending, but Donna gets mind-wiped and left to live at home in her non-existence? Bah.

The complete casting call of all characters past and present was a nice touch, and made it seem like the end of the show, not the series.

Season 4 was the only series that I think I enjoyed straight through. It was tons better than the third one, which made me almost give up on the show. The Doctor's Daughter was the weakest episode, but even it wasn't complete garbage like the ending episode of season 3.

Since watching the Library two-parter, I haven't been able to get it out of my head. It ranks up there with The Empty Child and Dalek as one of my favorite episodes.

Turn left was a nice "what if" episode and The Unicorn and the Wasp was a great exercise in clever dialogue and good, clean fun.

I'm about to move on to season 5, but for some reason, I thought this was the last one with Tennant? People in this thread seem to think he went out like a bitch, but he was alive and well last I saw.

You have 5 more Tennant episodes to go!! Before Season 5 there was a year of specials. You will need to watch all of those first!

Fake Edit: Also, I disagree with you on Donna. I thought that was a harsh but unique way to end her story. With Rose getting her happy ending I really appreciated that Donna was denied hers. Travelling with the Doctor is full of danger and surprises and sometimes things don't work out like you expect.

Keep going though, you still have more Tennant!

I dont think the 2009 episodes are on Netfilx streaming... I remember a US mate of mine getting pissed at that a few months back.

WHAT WILL WW do?

Luckily, The Next Doctor and The Waters of Mars are, though The End of Time not being up there is annoying.

One thing, Tennant sure seems to love playing the Doctor. It'll be kind of sad to see him go.

EDIT: Thanks for the info. I almost went straight to season 5. :lol

No Planet of the Dead either?

EDIT: iTunes might have them for a low price?

Nope and hopefully.

But I disagree with your disagreement. Donna kind of got treated like a bitch her entire run. She deserved a happy ending more than any other companion thus far, IMO.

Donna still got to have all those experiences, including being a Time Lord for a while! Something no one else has ever done. Whether she remembers them or not isn't all that important. The Doctor seems to value people being able to live a normal life very highly too, which there would be no way to do as long as Donna still remembered.

One character I felt really sorry for is Wilfred though. He deserved an adventure or two in the Tardis more than anyone.

Rose got to be a part of the Time Stream. And Donna can't remember any of those experiences, so she might as well never had them at all.

I agree with Wilfred though. He deserved a romp to the Planet of the All-Female Nubile Gymnasts.

Thanks Keyser.

I'm on The Next Doctor. I'm not caught up in the history of the production side of things, but did Tennant know at this point that he might be getting replaced? He seems to really like the role in this one. Like he's putting a little extra "oomph" into it.

Or, it could just be Christmas time affected him.

Not replaced, he chose to leave with RTD. At this point he definitely knows.

Was Davies forced out or something?

No. They could have kept going. They both chose to leave so that they could pursue other endeavours. I think Tennant kind of regretted the decision after finding out Moffatt was going to be showrunner but he's moved on now. Failed pilot with NBC and I hear he's going to be in the new Fright Night movie. :lol

As for RTD, I think he's handling the new Torchwood: International over at Starz.

He announce dhe was quitting on 29 October 2008. The Next Doctor aired on 25 December 2008. Filming for it started in April 2008.

I think he knew he was leaving for a long while before the announcement though. The dates are probably in The Writers Tale.

Ah. Seemed he didn't like the role as much as it seems. Just good acting, then.

I think he absolutely loved the role but all actors must move on at some point. From what I recall, he thought it was best to leave with RTD so that they could end their era together. There is a pretty big changing of the guard from RTD's era to Moffatt's.

Tennant on leaving Doctor Who:

"When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me," he said.

"Now don't make me cry," he added. "I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair."

Three years was "about the right time" to play the role, he told the BBC in an exclusive interview. "I think it's better to go when there's a chance that people might miss you, rather than to hang around and outstay your welcome," he said.

His stint in the show had been "the most extraordinary time, it's been bewildering, life changing, very exciting", he said.

"And just so much fun, such a great show to work on. That's one of the reasons I think it's right to take a deep breath and bow out when it's still fun, when it's a novelty. I don't ever want it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh and that means I'll miss it."

Russell T Davies, executive producer, said: "I've been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left!"

"After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we're planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching."

He watched the show as a kid, and he is pretty much an human encyclopaedia in terms of his knowledge of old episodes. I remember him appearing on at least 3 shows in the UK (probably did more) where he was quizzed on stuff by the hosts, and he got almost all questions asked correct - and the questions were on the weirdest, silliest, smallest, niggly bits of the show from 40 years back.

Aw.

"Hey, no fair sneaking up like that. What, are your legs on silent?"

:lol The Next Doctor is really good so far.

It's a shame Davies left when he did, IMO (though I am excited to see what Moffat does) because though he started off as an embarrassing writer, he came up with some damn good shows toward the end.

Then again, 3/4 of my favorite episodes are Moffat ones, so I have high hopes.

He almost changed his mind, Moffat pitched him his ideas for season 5 but ultimately Tennant stuck with his original decision.

America really has nothing like Doctor Who. The closest thing we have is The Simpsons, and those suck the farther they go on. I can't imagine there being any Doctor that was any better than the new ones.

Well, maybe Tom Baker. I still have to check him out after I'm caught up with the rest the Who fans.

EDIT: Which companion do you think he meant that forgot him? Or broke his heart?

EDIT2: Planet of the Dead. Oh, sweet. Doctor Who on another planet. I love it when he's not on Earth.

EDIT3: I take it back. Planet of the Dead is obnoxiously bad. The cat burglar is a horrible actress. She grins at every line like she can't believe she's saying it. It's a common malady in sci-fi when a "serious" actor or actress joins the cast. Plus, the Doctor spends too much time telling us how bloody clever she is. She's not, really.

Specials are pretty naff aside from Waters of Mars. I found it a lot like Utopia, it was amazing set up to a finale that disappoints.

Yeah, Waters of Mars was pretty damn good, and set things up really well.

The End of Time was good, but had several moments that dragged it down spectacularly. Such as:
Master Obama! and random time lord lady (at first i thought she was placed by Moffat, but now that seems not to be the case

I'm surprised you liked that. It's the worst bit of fan fiction level writing RTD produced and tainted the perfect wrap up to season 2. Rose should've never been brought back.

I hate the season 4 finale so much. End of Time was even worse.

Yeah, my only gripe about the Season 4 finale was bringing Rose back. I still get the impression that the whole thing was orchestrated just in case they wanted to bring both The Doctor and Rose back at some point or do a spin off special with them separately. Frankly, I hate the idea of anything that pulls the focus away from Matt Smith. If they want to bring Tennant back at this point, it should be the original version (not 10.5) and in a multi-Doctor special.

Oh, I didn't say it wasn't stupid. I didn't like the fact that they brought her back. I thought her ending at Bad Wolf Bay was just fantastic. But they did bring her back, and I was sure it was because she was going to sacrifice herself for the good of humanity or something. I'm glad she at least got a happy ending.

What can I say? Rose was my first companion and I have a soft spot for her. :lol

Just saw your impressions on Midnight. Glad you thought it was amazing. One of my favorite RTD stories.

It was definitely proof that Davies was a competent writer, given the right setting. The diamond world was a far cry from the farting aliens from season 1.

"The laws of time are mine. AND THEY WILL OBEY ME!" "We're fighting time itself and I'm going to win!"

Nice acting, Tennant. Where was this balls-to-the-wall emotion before? Great googly moogly. Waters of Mars didn't really feel like a Doctor Who episode until this part.

EDIT: "This is wrong, Doctor!" What is, you withered up bitch? Saving your freakin' life? GTFO.

She killed herself? What? How the hell does that make any sense? And suddenly a wild Ood appears...

Agree about Rose. I thought season 2's ending was excellent. Big battle, and a tragic ending. "I'm burning up a sun to say good-bye" . Bringing her back just retroactively diminishes the entire ending. I also hated season 4's ending, it was just bad. Way to much going on.

I enjoyed End of Time up until the very end and Tennant's exit. In part because is was 100x better than the last episode with
The Master
. That being said, I think End of Time was built around some roundtable brainstorming session where the joke
"The Master Race"
was made, and them building up from there.

Just finished watching it myself. She killed herself because she wanted history to play out as it was meant to and it was the only option she had left available to her. Adelaide knew that the Doctor had gone to far saving them and was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. I think it's a great conclusion to the story.

The only real plot hole is that the Doctor could have taken them a couple of hundred years in the future still saving their lives but not changing history.

You're opposite me. I wasn't a huge fan of End of Time but thought the last 20 minutes were fantastic.

It made little sense for a character who was trying to stay alive seconds earlier and who was smart enough to realize the TARDIS was capable of running through time. Like you said, she knew he was in a state to break all the rules and she could have made him take her away.

EDIT: Oh, man. The Master's corny ass is back. Blech.

Just came off as needless fan wanking to me. Eccleston gets injured, he gets a few seconds and boom he regenerates. Tennant just dragged on.

Actually she wasn't trying to stay alive in the last 10 minutes. She set the self destruct on the station. Still, don't know why she would choose to get into the TARDIS though. Of course, they *skip* that bit.
