Aside from your obsession with Rose, welcome to the cool club of Who fans who loved Eccleston and wish he had stayed around for at least one more season =/

I wouldn't call it an obsession.

I watched 'Rose' last night and loved it all over again. I don't really care about Rose so much as Eccelston. When he said "I'm the Doctor, run for your life" before blowing up that department store I fell in gay love with him.

It seems to me that Matt Smith channels him a bit.

Matt Smith seems to have brought back a bit of his anger and intesity and mixed them with the sillyness of the 2nd Doctor. Makes for an interesting mix.

...plus a dash of Hartnell - mannerisms, more than anything else - and a touch of Baker I's approach (playing the Doctor as an alien - although without Baker's glorious eccentricities on- and off-screen). Some of my favourite moments this series - partly due to the writers and partly due to Smith - have been when the Doctor says something insensitive or oblivious, or doesn't understand some aspect of human behaviour, because he's not a human.

Absolutely right. I love the alien-feel of this Doctor. It was refreshing with Baker I after Pertwee and it's refreshing here. The conversation he has with
pregnant
Amy is priceless. :lol

I'm watching old who for first time int he other thread so I had never seen them.

I love how you can date them from the logo's. The "More you know" star wipe for the 80's logo :lol :lol .

Man that Square diamond logo was terrible. Did they go with that to sell little badges to kids in the UK or something?

9/10 would be my favorite logo I'd say.

First one was great, like the new who ones. Other ones were hit an miss, some going to far with the synth sounds. l did like the Paul McGann one and how it reversed the song, it worked.

Finished Plant of Giants last night. My wife thought it was "boorriinngg", but I thought it was quite a nice under-rated little story. The TARDIS crew return to earth, but are shrunk to a tiny size; why they don't get back in the TARDIS and leave I don't know. It is nice to have a story which doesn't involve a malevolent alien trying to take over the world.
The Doctor is very anarchistic here, blowing shit up with a bunsen burner. I don't think they'd let something like this go out today. Kids would be sticking their deodorants over lighters and injuring themselves.
Ian is looking quite Tennant-esque in his suit. The Doctor wears a cape now; capes are cool.
Nothing fantastic, but enjoyable and not too long at 3 episodes. 6

The entire Fnarg season is playing tomorrow on BBC America starting at 9am, in case anyone cares to re-watch 13 hours of Doctor Who in one sitting.

Yes, sir!

I'm starting it now.

EDIT: "Lovely girl. Diabetic." :lol

Nice.

Well, unlike Rickey, I actually like Rory. Makes me dislike this Doctor a bit because of it...:lol
The current companionship definitely works best when it includes The Doctor, Amy and Rory. The Doctor coming between the two never fails to be funny. :lol

I think I laughed harder at Rory going all Star Wars kid on the fishpire than anything. Great episode so far.

EDIT: Amy kissed Rory. Awwwww. She's still hot, but she's kind of a hoe so far. That redeemed her a bit.

EDIT2: Rory and the Doctor acting like friends. Kind of a nice touch, having a male friend for him. "We are not here boys." "Yes, we are." "...we are."

Amy has issues.

Mostly due to the Doctor fucking up her childhood, though. :lol

I like Rory mostly because he stabilizes Amy, who I find to frantic and unlikable when he's not around.

He's really likable so far.

I haven't seen this Doctor do anger yet. He does "asshole" better than the rest so far. He's not a very nice Doctor as I've seen.

Kinda weirded me out that they were trying to pass of a 23 year old as a 15 year old.

I really like that one for how unusual it is. For one they're tiny. For another they return to the modern day, which wasn't happening all the time back then. Then that even at tiny size they're trying to influence the regular-sized people and situations around them.

I thought you watched the Dalek episode? When he got angry at them I thought it was pretty cringe worthy.

Gotta say, as much as I love Tennant and Smith's takes on the Doctor, nobody's really gotten the Dalek hate down as well as Eccleston did.

I mean, he FLIPPED THE HELL OUT when he met that first Dalek.

Yes, and it was extremely awkward looking.

Exactly.

Smith's anger and disgust at the humans (and what he was going to do) at the end of Beast Below was far more effective than 9 or 10s silly pantomime shouting.

Just finished series 1 with William Hartnell with a friend whom I got hooked onto New Who. She's really enjoyed it aside from the "molasses-like" pacing, which she has now become accustomed to.

Now onto the Planet of Giants!

Agreed. It actually surprised me.

(Yes, I broke down and bought episode 2 on iTunes. It's getting really hard to wait until November for the box set.)

I can kind of relate to that, but I adore early Who adventures like "The Dalek Invasion of Earth", "The Web Planet" and "The War Games" which were all fairly sedately paced (and in the case of "The War Games" some 3+ hours long!).

I'd love to be able to see "The Daleks' Master Plan" in all its 12 episode, 4+ hour glory, but alas...

After the Unearthly Child and the Planet of the Daleks, the pacing had improved quite a bit. My personal favourite serial of the first series is Marco Polo.

So this is the place for all the people who are gonna start watching from the first episode?

I feel like I'm part of something. Onwards to episode 2 (how long would it take me if I watch one episode per day?)

Thirteen episodes, thirteen days. If you're talking about Series 5, that is.

So, since there's a marathon tomorrow on BBC America, I'm going to watch as many episodes as I can in a row. Anyone want to join me?

Just jumped into this with Episode 1 of the most recent series. Had only seen a handful of episodes (mostly, if not all Tennant) before this. Absolutely LOVED it. I probably won't be venturing into this thread much more often, for fear of spoilers, so I'm basically just dropping in to say that I love Matt Smith already, and can't wait to see more.

"Basically...run."

Fuck. Yeah.

What glorious timing. I'm watching An Unearthly Child right now.

Interesting how this show started out good from the very beginning.

It's good to see you going back to the beginning. I find the pacing a little off in that initial episode but still enjoy the "unique" relationship the first Doctor had with his companions.

It was originally 4 episodes, but even the producers thought it was too boring so cut it to 3 episodes.

Planet of Giants was originally four episodes in length. Upon viewing Episodes 3 and 4, which focused more heavily on Hilda and Bert, Head of Drama Sydney Newman ordered them spliced together in order to form a faster-paced climax (Episode 3) focusing on the core characters of the series. Episode 4 was called "The Urge to Live" and directed by Douglas Camfield (instead of Mervyn Pinfield, who directed Episodes 1-3). When Episodes 3 and 4 were edited together to make the new Episode 3, only Camfield was credited.

The decision to splice the last two episodes into one would have ramifications for the second production block of the series, when the producers were left with a one-episode space following Galaxy 4. Rather than producing a single-episode stand-alone story or extend any of the planned serials, Mission to the Unknown was commissioned to serve as a prelude to The Daleks' Master Plan without the participation of any of the regular cast. This was produced in the same block as Galaxy 4, and both were held over to be the first two serials of Season 3.[5]

Currently, the original episodes 3 & 4 are missing. No soundtrack exists for these episodes.
