What is that about spying on a teacher with an iPhone?

:D

Just finished watching Tom Baker in The Pirate Planet. Surprisingly good episode with a few neat twists and some great science fiction concepts. Douglas Adams never fails!

Upon a second rewatch, Smith's Doctor reminds me a lot about Patrick Troughton. It's probably the jazz hands.

Eccleston's "Fantastic!" > Tennant's "Allons-y !" > Smith's "Geronimo!"

When The Doctor is freaking out as the ships leave (after the screw driver blows up) he reminded me exactly of Troughton. It was kind of scary.

I saw this earlier. Judging by the cell phone and laptop being used it was fairly close to present day.

Thing is, Rory looks to be in his mid-twenties. If we go by the gafette, he started
being a nurse when he was in his early teens
? I think Moffat is hiding something there.

RORY IS A TIME LORD OH SHIT.

If he got that in 1990, then he's been a nurse for 20 years.

What the fuck? If we're to go by the actor of Rory's age, he got it when he was 8.

WAT.

ONLY NEIL PATRICK HARRIS CAN DO THAT SHIT.

Overall superb episode, thought the first half was much better than the last, which too fast paced. Cinematography and directing were sublime.

The Doctor
I like how Smith's Doctor echoed Tennant's in the beginning, especially his speeches and delivery, and transformed as the episode went on. He's a much more physical actor than Tennant and doesn't over explain things (at least in this episode, might be part of his regeneration). I agree that his final confrontation with the Atraxi was terrible and seemed completely out of character, more like something Tennant would've done. (then again he's the same person, so whatever)

Amy Pond
I came into this episode expecting to hate her, just seemed like she would be an over sexualized, eye-candy type character. Boy was I wrong. Her backstory and psychological state are fascinating. It allows her to be completely skeptical and bullheaded, yet have childlike imagination, which I hope will allow her and the Doctor to have a better repertoire. Didn't particularly like implications of the kiss shown the previews, but with DW you never know. And I hate the foreshadowed drama with her wedding.

I will miss Tennant and RTD (he put some love into his characters, haters be damned), but the series seems to be going in a great direction. Love Moffat...still need to finish Jekyll and Smith was an excellent choice.

Smith/Tennant/Barrowman collaboration please

Thanks for pointing this out. Knowing Moffat, he definitely has something planned. God I'm prolly going to have to get into my "Lost" mindset with this series. We've already got the "silence is coming," River Song, and Amy's wedding to think about.

I'm really wanting a Smith/Tennant/Eccleston story now.

That probably won't happen, since Moffat's idea for a multi-Doctor story would be to have one overarching threat that the Doctor faces at different points in his life, in his different incarnations, instead of all the different Doctors teaming up at once.

Which is a pretty cool spin on the multi-doctor idea, imo, but kind of rules out the possibility of seeing Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith interact with one another unfortunately.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure Eccleston doesn't want anything to do with Doctor Who anymore.

What the fuck happened there? It seems so surreal, since he seemed to have a wonderful relationship with RTD before the revival. Hell, he asked to be auditioned as the Doctor.

So, what the fuck happened?

I think the fans happened.

And he was typecast for a while. He seems to be doing better now, though. I've seen him appear in a few movies.

Mostly as villians.

Forget Eccleston, just Smith and Tennant will do...plus Barrowman. They could just use alternate/human Tennant, and Harkness is absolutely expected, especially after his Children of Earth Departure.

Was his invincibility ever explained? Oh and what about Jenny, the Doctor's daughter. Meh, too much RTD baggage I think, though some mention would be nice.

I thought the decision to leave was taken before his first episode was broadcast.

I do seem to remember he had some disagreements with one of the directors, if rumours are to be believed.

On second thought, I think the problem I had with the with the Atraxi roof scene was the build up. We had the extensive, comedic wardrobe change scene and then his redundant questioning, which took away from the delivery of his threat.

Awesome episode. Moffat wrote it well, the production was great, Smith and the new girl are great, and it was an excellent introduction into the series. I'm currently rewatching from the Ecclestone episodes onwards and it's such a mixed bag. RTD ruined some episodes and almost destroyed the series altogether (the Anne Droid...) but it was still a good show with a lot of good, standout episodes. Moffat wrote some excellent episodes during the show, and I just found out that Mark Gatiss wrote a few as well.

Errr, stfu.
David Tennant is the best.
They've completely demeaned Doctor Who by replacing good episode stories with slutty girls. Ew, I hope Karen Gillan gets killed off, ugly mother fhucker.
At least Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate were actually good actresses. Pmsl. Karen Gillan is an epic failure.
But anyway, Matt Smith was ok-ish.
David Tennant is 1000000x better.
BRING DAVID TENNANT BACK!!!
I think this series is going to be down-right BORING.

Rewatched it and still love it, although it was, without question, Moffat's weakest offering plotwise. The midsection was kind of all over the place, but fast paced and snappy enough not to bother me. The opening and closing 10 minutes were perfection and Moffat nailed the introductions of both The Doctor and Amy. No words to describe how much i adore the way he established the history between them. I loved the almost fairytale quality to it, as Moffat has put it in interviews. I can't wait to see how Amy's childhood obsession with him will play into their dynamic.

Smith embodied the role so well, that i don't even miss Tennant the slightest bit.

Am i the only one that outright LOVED the titles sequence and remixed theme on first viewing?

yeah if that NHS badge isn't a gaff then the mobile phone and the laptop definitely were. Also the fact that Tennant was in the aliens surveillance footage. So I'm thinking it's a really poorly made prop.

btw that Daily Mail list is amazing :lol

So, what the fuck happened?

I think it was a number of things. I've heard he was only doing one year and that was it. I've heard he didn't really get along with a lot of the production team, and that there was a lot of friction there. I've heard the typecast thing, and also that the rabid fan base kind of freaked him out. The biggest one I've heard is that he did it, it's over, and he's not the kind to go back and reprise an old role.

Which is kind of a shame, because as someone else pointed out, his other recent roles, (Seeker: The Dark is Rising, GI Joe, brief stint on Heroes) haven't exactly made him a superstar in the US.

I've also heard they cast Tennant before Eccleston's series even aired. I can't imagine that was a surprise, since Eccleston only planned to stay for a year, but I imagine it was probably off-putting.

But we'll probably never know what the real story is.

I don't think Eccleston is the sort of actor who particularly seeks fame or big "status" roles. He just does what he fancies, when he fancies.

In the interviews on the series 1 DVD he mentions that he never used to watch the series or particularly care for it. He just wanted to work with Russell T. Davies on a kids show. I think one series was all he needed to strike that off of his to-do list and move on.

Am i the only one that outright LOVED the titles sequence and remixed theme on first viewing?

I'm mixed on the visuals, but loved the theme right away. Dunno why people dislike it so much. I love that the main melody has gone back to sounding more synthy.

I still think the cloudy / smoky vortex was a one of thing because the Tardis was fixing itself, and we'll go back to the blue vortex seen in the 3D advert next week

I hope so but somehow doubt it, as the amount they went on about the titles only being finished this week.

I hope so, I like the remixed theme, but the visuals, not so much.

My only issue with it is that it ends too abruptly. It needs a proper fade out. The actual tune itself (especially in it's extended version) is fine.

I kinda like the look of the stormy vortex, but you guys are right in saying that the credits aren't as brisk as they used to be. At least they don't feel that way.

Smiths Doctor was pretty good, will take some time to get used to, but It's a good start. Like new Tardis look as well. was a good first episode to start up the season.

Not liking Amy at all, just getting started but she seems too annoying.
