If Bush leaves office with a high approval rating, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Republican party "ride" the Bush wave and try to put in Jeb Bush.

For the Democrats, they're going to try to put in Hilary Clinton, John Edwards or some other adorable political figure.

Someone on the news said they found it odd that the exit polling matched up almost exactly except for those battleground states with electronic voting without receipts. In those states Bush consistently came out 3-5% ahead of what the exit polls predicted. That's very disturbing IMO.

it's entirely in the hands of republicans now. If they do a good enough job at establishing an environment that promotes, effectively, a substantial revival of the economy.. well, that's the biggest factor... that can only help maintain the current edge republicans have.

It wont help the republicans make any space between them and democrats (nowhere near as much as most people would expect) because if the economy is going good then the American electorate will not believe that a republican dominated government is absolutely required anymore. The democrats will then have a chance to gain some steam with social issues.

The heart of America (geographically speaking, all those red states) will continue to grow conservative so if the republicans can get out the vote like we saw this time then the republicans will continue to hold the edge globally.

But if the economic recovery falters (for whatever reason, whether it be in the hands of the government or not) then the republicans have no shot at keeping both branches of government. I think in that scenario the democrats win back the white house. And I think that just like in this election domestic issues will dominate versus international issues in deciding the president and the legislative makeup.

The youth voter turnout is one thing, but Democrats continue to try and divide the nation. Republicans win because they appeal to the religious and moral values of the Midwest and South without completely alienating the rest of the country. Democrats are usually much more conceited in their campaigns and act like, "Hey, west coast and northeast, we rule and the rest of the country can suck it!"

That strategy is flawed and the last Democrat to win was Clinton because he didn't completely alienate the South. Republicans campaigns are centered, but far reaching, as evident by a lot of northeast states being so close.

For all the bitching that it's just the South, a lot of those states in the North were equally divided. New Hampshire ain't Georgia, people.

even with high voter turn out it only ends up being around and generally less than 50%

This election basically confirms that gun lovers and evangelical christians dominate the popular vote in this country, and most likely will for years to come. It also confirms that nothing can seem to motivate young voters in this country. A terrorist attack, an administration called out for many failures, a war considered by many to be a mistake, yet only 17% of the youth voted.
