More Forza 2 music on the right panel.

Forza doesn't delve into the jazzy/classical areas of GT but the series has boasted some big artists and songs nonetheless.

How do I go about making teh muzak?

This is a tough question to answer, I believe it's the creativity and not the tools that determine your ability to make music. To those who would like to join us creating some tunes for these games here are some of the music-making methods that have been used before by previous GAME contributors:

Commercial Software Packages

LOGIC STUDIO
PRO TOOLS
ABLETON LIVE
FRUITY LOOPS
CUBASE
SONAR/CAKEWALK
REASON
REAPER

(will add more with links)

Cost-effective Software Packages

LOGIC EXPRESS
ABLETON LIVE LITE
GARAGE BAND (free with a MAC)
RENOISE

(for those with iPhones/iPod Touch)

Start off by getting AUDACITY (free) to allow you to record from your iPhone/iPod Touch

INTUA BEATMAKER
DOPPLERPAD
NOISE.IO
iDRUM

(will add more with links)

Freeware

AUDIOTOOL (web based music creation with the ability to record)

Is there a site that can hose my music for y'all to make fun of?

GAME participants have been using SOUNDCLOUD to host our in-progress songs. The site allows us to comment on each others tracks in general or at specific times in the song. Let us know when you've created your account so we can link/follow each other.

I will be updating the OP with relevant project dates. So far only FORZA 3 has a concrete release date.

-------
As always GAME projects are open to ALL participants. We're here to have fun but most importantly learn from each other and become better at our craft. I'll be updating the OP once we've got our theme with project dates and shit.

Some links to previous GAME projects to give everyone an idea of what we're about (wow, we've been doing this since 2007)

Traditional Japanese-style game sountrack?
Well I was thinking more specific than that. But I don't know how these things work and how broad you want the categories. So I guess yeah, Traditional Japanese-style game soundtrack if that's as close as you can go.

But I'd be down for almost anything.

Yep. I'm thinking anything that would make sense in a traditional RPG like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Lufia, Wild Arms, Lost Odyssey, Xenogears, ect.

In most of these types of games you have music broken up between:

Battle.

Boss battle.

Town/village.

Dungeon.

World map.

Scenario/story/scene.

I was thinking it would be cool to be able to select as many from these categories as we want.

Would one be able to compose an entirely electronic piece while sticking in that genre?

When I think J-RPG I think of marches and lots of orchestral instruments. I compose almost entirely using synthetic sounds.

I would suggest that we do a theme based around games this time though. Are there any games coming out that support custom soundtracks ala Wipeout HD?

And what is that APB thing? The OP wasn't exactly clear other than they'll accept songs and the site is down atm.

id love another video game theme. i agree with pirahna1 about the orchestra thing not really practical. sure, lots of older games used midi and stuff but not everyone is using garageband which comes with all the cheesy trumpet sounds and stuff haha.

what are some high profile games coming out late 09, early 2010? gran turismo 5 or god of war 3? lol i dunno.

i must get in on this though. i was so upset that my sessions got deleted so i couldnt submit for the last one.

Oh? What is the game about, etc? Like I said the site was down and I haven't heard of it before now. Maybe we could do a custom soundtrack for it ala GAME 4? I dunno, just throwing things out.

EDIT: It looks pretty cool actually. GTA4 meets Planetside maybe? Hey, any exposure we can get is awesome. I dunno how feasible it would be to make a custom soundtrack for APB though. It sounds pretty action oriented.

Maybe we could do an Action Games GAME rather than a J-RPG GAME? Or just a High Intensity GAME? Something along those lines?

It's an MMO action game from Realtime Worlds (Crackdown Devs). I'd love to have us all contribute to a soundtrack that could actually ship with the game :D

The competition will be tough but heck, why not push ourselves right? The WipeOut HD team appreciated our effort enough by giving us those sweet renders with the GAME 3 logo on it.

is this game for ps3? (it's all i have)

I creamed a little when I saw those. I'm still a little upset GAME 3.1 was never released :(

I feel like my stuff can't hold a candle up to a lot of you guys (Monchi, BTK, m0dus) but I'm going to go all out on this one. A little feedback goes a long way to boost one's perception of one's music. I always end up learning more than I thought I would due to these compilations - I really appreciate the opportunity to work with you all.

What kind of timeframe are we looking at for this release? Personally I feel 1 month is too short, how's 3 months? Or better yet, what's the deadline for the APB contest? We can make that our deadline, minus the time it'll take to master and complete the package.

And we really need liner notes this time. I miss them terribly! They add SOO much to the final package. The last few comps have been lacking in that department.

San Paro: The Living City
APB: All Points Bulletin is set in San Paro, a persistent, online modern city which lives and breathes, filled with a population of civilians going about their daily lives. Joining the civilian population are opposing factions of players: Criminals and Enforcers, fighting for control and leaving their mark as they succeed or fail.

Criminal or Enforcer?
Players choose to be either a criminal or an enforcer and are matched against each other in fast-paced, third person action. The criminals aim to create a city rife with violent crime. The enforcers are pitted against them, protecting the civilian population and fighting the criminals at every turn. Want to commit a robbery with your friends? You can, but watch out because another group of players will be out to stop you!

Conflict and Game Play
Players can pledge to criminal or enforcement organizations and receive missions or move through the environment choosing open world activities. For criminals; robbery, graffiti, arson and murder all add to notoriety. For enforcers; arresting criminals, preventing crimes and cleaning up the city all add to prestige. With a range of weapons and vehicles to choose from and multiple ways to be matched up with other players, this is the ultimate test of your skills.

Be a Celebrity!
As a top player, your name will be at the top of league tables held online. San Paro will be your world: your character’s name and face as well known as a Hollywood movie star, a standard that other players aim for. But how long can you stay at the top?

Be Creative!
APB has one of the most in depth character and vehicle customization tools available today. Every player can create a unique character with a level of detail unparalleled in other games. And customization doesn’t stop at physical appearance. Clothing, body art and vehicles can all be customized using symbols created by the players themselves in our symbol editor. Successful players are rewarded with greater ability to customize so the better you are at the game, the better you’ll look.

Play Your Own Music!
The world of APB will be filled with music: you can import your own music files into APB plus we have more than 100 tracks licensed to the game and a sophisticated in-game music editor.

APB FAQ - says the game is PC only for now, console port under consideration

I could go either way on this one, though the APB trailer made it sound like they were looking for stuff with edgy vocals. RPG might be more suited to the G.A.M.E. roster stylistically. But like I said, I could do both.

Rather than just RPGs, how about we remake our favorite video game soundtrack? People that want to remake RPGs can. Those that want to do shooters can. I personally really want to do a new take on the Perfect Dark soundtrack. Many birds. One stone.

Since this fall seems to be a pretty baller time for car racing with Forza 3 and Shift, perhaps a theme for good music to listen to while driving would be a nice fit. That doesn't necessarily have to be fast paced EDM, for example, I think Metropolis Street Racer has a great soundtrack that fits "driving" and it ranges from Will Smith knock offs to cheesy rock/dance, etc.

Oooohhhhh. So APB is a game in itself? I had no idea and I totally misunderstood. I thought APB was some site monchi-kun was newly connected with or was trying to promote or somethingand had little to do with the music we choose to make.

:lol You guys are stupid, why did you let me come up with this RPG music idea for a GTA/Crackdown style MMO?

Well this changes everything. I'm thinking the usual, techno, hip hop, dance style music for this one. I'm still in, so let's do it.

I really dig the racing game idea, even if it is a little close to GAME 3. I have this vision of a track dripping with compression and a tight minimal drum kit. At least, that's the feel I get when I think MSR. Maybe toss a little acid riff in there and have it dance around the spectrum.

The great thing about racing games is you could even have a nice down-tempo groovy track and it would accent the game perfectly as well.

pirahna1 said:

Given that G.A.M.E. 3 was our mostly successful release, that's not a bad thing. I think it would actually be a good idea to go down the "here's some free DLC for your custom soundtrack" road again, and racing tunes are always fun. I have one lying around half-finished, and another 99% done.

I'm up for anything; RPG, atmospheric, its all good.

But about what someone said about RPGs generally using orchestral instruments, it could be the challenge of G.A.M.E 6 to create an electronic RPG soundtrack based on the scenarios that dark octave mentioned like battle, boss battle etc. It would be quite interesting to see what people come up with. Or you could re-create your favourite RPG themes in your own style, but I guess thats an OCremix sort of thing.

I'm just suggesting it because I'm a big RPG fan, it probably wouldn't work out :lol

<3.

Just wanted to say I really dug what you guys did at GAME 5.0. Congrats to everyone, very nice work :).

And I'll be definitely in for this one. Last time I had a shitload of things to do and I barely browsed GAF </3.

As for the theme, how about battle tunes?. Genre doesn't matter as long as the songs are fitting.

This would be a good opportunity for me to get to know Propellerhead Record better. As for a theme APB sounds fine to me.

I was listening to the 1up podcast last night and they pretty much confirmed that Gran Turismo 5 will be out this year - if you guys want exposure there won't be a bigger opportunity than that. GT is the biggest series with customer soundtracks there is. It could also dovetail with the other racing releases (though I'd recommend making GT the main focus for attention's sake).

agreed LFK, it's nice to have/use a specific game as a target (helped us alot with Wipeout)

so +1 vote for Gran Turismo 5/Gran Turismo Mobile as our Game 6 theme

I'm not really down with Grand Turismo mainly because GAME 3 was already a racing theme. Are we going to do this because we want to be creative and try new stuff, or just because we want exposure?

Like I said, I think we should do something like making completely new takes on our favorite game OSTs. That way, those that want to do Grand Turismo can, and those that want to do RPGs can, and those that want to do something else can.

It'll have a lot more variety that way.

By this do you mean remix/remake a track from a game or make your own track for one of your favourite games?

There's tons of room for creativity within a racing theme, hardly any of our Wipeout tracks sounded like the typical drum n' bass wipeout sound, but it was still the best received out of all of them. Really all racing means is "uptempo", and it doesn't preclude doing game song remixes if that's what you really want to do.

Gran turismo covers a lot of styles from jazz to dance to metal, unlike wipeout which was much more focused electro, house and drum and bass

this gives people the opportunity to make whatever they like in the context of gran turismo, although it may be detrimental as the music styles one could make for gran turismo are so broad as to encompass practically anything

I vote Gran Turismo 5 / Mobile as well. When I was thinking about doing a racing genre earlier I was mainly thinking of GT5, but wasn't sure if it was coming out soon (or ever :lol ).

Plus we'll be going back a bit to doing stuff game related. Making a custom soundtrack for one of the most anticipated releases of the year is right up our alley!

Let's do it.

alright, anymore votes for GT5/GT Mobile? other ideas?

i figure we should decide the album concept by the end of next week (updating the OP)

First of all, I swear that I'm jumping in this bad boy. Here is hoping the PC gods don't screw me over again.

Second, I like the GT/racer idea, as that genre of games is, musically, everywhere at once.
I like the battle tunes idea as well.

i'm going to try a few things an see if we can be better organized for this next round, we may consider using a group calendar for project milestones, something that can contact you via an email your provide. communicating via the forums and PM is not the best when trying to make sure we've got everyone covered. this helps if you can't access GAF at work or have been banned or something else that can keep you from checking the site.

Hmm, honestly I haven't played GT so I assumed it would be like wipeout. I'm gonna check out the OST soon.

It uses a lot of licensed tracks, everything from Lenny Kravitz to Raewon to Blur to Moby to David Bowie:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_the_Gran_Turismo_Series

There's no stylistic limitation whatsoever, aside from generally being uptempo; though it does tend to lean towards the rock w/synths end of the spectrum.

I've just sat down and put together most of a track in the last two hours; it sounds very Ridge Racer but would fit with GT, so I hope that's the direction we end up going in :lol

someone who wants to do "downtempo" or slow tunes should check out the menu music for GT. it could make for a nice middle song in the album

going to take the plunge and upgrade to Logic Studio 9 after getting a demo of the new guitar modeling shizz...i really want to do some guitar tracks for this comp

I'd love a soundtrack for GT?Forza. After the amazing Wipeout soundtrack you all made, I'm sure it would great!

What's a good sequencer to move up to from FL Studio? I'm probably not using it right, but I feel so limited by it in terms of music style. Everything is always bright and chip-ish.

Seems like GT would be a good idea with varied music styles. I would try and submit two tracks for it (if it was allowed?) this time, probably one of the jazzy style ones with electric piano and a synth rock one.

ultim8p00 - Generally I think DAW choice comes down to personal preference of the interface etc, all the major ones have the same main functionality. Look around the websites and reviews of the main ones like Sonar, Cubase and logic if you have a mac. If they have any trial versions then of course give them a go. Another option would be to try Reaper, as far as I know its very cheap with lots of functionality and is very stable.

Have you checked out any tutorials on youtube for FL?

As for "moving on" to something else it might be good to know exactly what you want to do that seems difficult to pull off in FL.
