Official HaloFest Thread | We're so f**cking tired of shooters...and #butts

Certainly not in beta. But try it, coherently complain. Who knows? Dec 29.
Well, I mean, if it is as it's been described, then it works pretty much like the classic zoom/scope right? Just reskinned to make it look like ADS.

If that's the case, then adding the option to use the classic scope would be pretty natural I think. That way everyone would be happy. If you love having half your screen obstructed by the weapon when zooming, you use the ADS style scope, if you prefer the elegance of the classic scope, then you use the classic scope. Win-win.

Really glad it ended at a reasonable time, I didn't want to stay up until 2.

Nothing is as bad as Metal Gear TGS, though; they had me stay up till 4 am for info I already knew.

I think you could play that in past Halo games, at least with custom games. So it is a named gamemode now?

If the ADS must stay, at least ensure it is sufficiently close to your "face", wide and no cluttering with those holo overlays.

Does the AR even have an ADS thing?

Yes, it's featured in the Halo 5 Guardians Vidoc that's currently up on IGN.

I'm still not clear on whether it affords an accuracy bonus, or just a visual/range bonus a la the traditional Halo scope.

They seem pretty adamant that you can go through the entire game hip-firing and not really be at a disadvantage as far as accuracy, but that isn't really going to help players like me who use the 2x and 3x zooms on BTB maps.

I actually think 343 is doing all the right things. The core of Halo, at least to me, was an equal playing field. That's honestly the one, important distinction between Halo and Call of Duty.

The Spartan Abilities all look like they fit in with Halo given the drawbacks to using them (sprint affects shields, smart scope is descoped after the player is hit, etc.). This is no Halo 4 situation (and I didn't really even think Halo 4 was that bad -- heck, I played a lot of Halo 4).

Are assassinations not a thing anymore? I loved those :(

I really hope they are still there. There's no reason why they should be taken out.

Also, SPECTATOR MODE YES!!!!

I don't think I saw anyone use it in the stream. Makes me curious how you would actually ADS given its shape.
I'll check out the vidoc shortly.

Because I was a Halo fan.

Of course I'm interested. It's like NASCAR fans, only when they see a car crash, killing all their favorite drivers.

Yep, it's like that.

So you just want to complain and not offer any constructive criticism during the beta that could make it better?

Makes no sense.

The messaging needed on the Smart Scope just seems like an absolute headache to me that's not worth any possible upside of gaining new players.

Reading the Youtube comments all I see is "OH MY GOD AIM DOWN SIGHTS RIP HALO". What is not explained or gleaned just from watching a quick gameplay video is that it's just a cosmetic change from the zoom and doesn't function the same way as Call of Duty.

Just seems like a nightmare to me.

Besides "Truth," I'm not really liking the other map design. Certain Affinity seems to enjoy putting a bunch of ramps, stairs, and boxes in a complicated blender. Many maps in H4 had a similar problem. I miss the more open and simplified layouts of Bungie Halo. Less is more.

Yup. No ordinance, everyone starts with the same layouts and fight for map control to nab power weapons. Only now with a bunch of fast paced cool looking abilities.

YES PLEASE.

The AR looks awesome in all the videos until you see it ADS. lol

I actually don't have a problem with sprint bc I like the way they're trying to balance it.

Don't like the rest of the abilities though. I think they're going to fundamentally change the game and not in a good way. Think most people will dislike them also.

I keep thinking of Titanfall when I see this training map and Spartans pulling themselves up onto platforms to get higher.

To be fair, Bungie doesn't even abide by the 'less is more' mindset anymore. All the maps in Destiny are cluttered masses of unnecessary 'furniture' like rocks, pipes, bricks, plants that serve no purpose aside from making their artists feel special and getting players caught while they're desperately trying to get out of the way of OPed AOE attacks.

I feel like if they started striking features because some people were having trouble understanding them, they'd never be able to stop :P

My immediate feedback from the videos so far is that you guys may need to adjust the visual and aural feedback. There's way too much information being simultaneously fed to the player that it gets lost in a blur.

-Context HUD elements (hitmarkers, ability reticle)
-Weapon model in ADS with parallaxing scope
-Announcer
-Audible Player callouts behind announcer
-Medals
-HUD damage indicators
-HUD callouts and killfeed
-Saturated game audio (excessive beeps)

Truth. I've adapted to every Halo without a problem, (4 included but that was my least favorite). Halo is Halo, it's the player's job to take advantage of how each plays. That's how I look at it at least, and because of that, I'm never one to bitch about their decisions. :) I just say "ok", and I get good with what's there.

Agreed, but let's be honest, there was no way to get 'good' at getting the better random ordinance drops in Halo 4.

Yay, I get a needler or a speed boost, you get a one-shot sniper weapon or a power boost.

I mean, yes, you CAN use skill to make up the bullshit gap, but it's not FUN to do so.

While I don't agree with your attitude toward the devs and artists, I agree that Destiny map design differs from how Bungie did Halo map design and I still prefer the less-is-more approach. The sorts of maps you could plan out on a napkin at dinner, not the kind you need Autodesk CAD to sort out.

BTW, the medals are still horrible.

Why can't they just go back to the classic medals? They looked WAY better...

Lol YUP! Glad to see it's even once again.

Welcome to the ADD generation where constant gratification is necessary.

Yo, ya'll are crazy. The Halo announcer is great!

God, that was actually my LEAST favorite part of Destiny (crazy, I know). The announcer put me to fuckin sleep every game.

I found the Destiny announcer endearingly passive-aggressive in his tone, lol.

It's like 'yeah, great, good for you, like I haven't seen somebody do that 10,000 times already'.

But yes, the Halo announcer is second only to the UT announcer in the pantheon of great first-person shooter announcers.

The battle rifle is so fucking sexy. The way it looks, the way it shoots, the way it sounds.

edit: the assault rifle could still use some work. I don't know if they'll ever fix that thing.

I don't think Certain Affinity is solely responsible for the maps in Halo 5. In the IGN podcast, the founder of CA (Max something) mentioned that his team was doing the entire multiplayer mode for a FPS that is not a Halo game coming out in 2015.

Didn't really like what I saw of the Halo 5 gameplay. Too fast paced and too many moves that are not necessary like the boost to the left and right. Felt like I was watching a match of CoD Advanced Warfare at moments. I dunno, I'm excited for the beta, but so far not impressed.
