From the review:

The storyline is not the deepest we have seen...

The blocking system is both easy, and frustrating to use...

The problem is, if you are in a combo, you cannot just back out of it to block, and thus causing you to take damage...

It is the standard enemies that become a problem. Playing this game, you quickly realize that you are battling the same handful of enemies over and over again. There are a few variations thrown in here and there, but they are far and few between.

Some selective quoting, but how could you ever give the 9,7 then?

I would understand an 8 fully though, but 9,7 is ridiculous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is an ARMY that nariko is fighting against correct? I think that was fully intentional by Ninja Theory. You're going to have archers, and guys with swords, in the same type of armor. There isn't supposed to be centuars, undead, or giants. It looks like those types are saved for the bosses. Which makes sense given the storyline.

From what I understand from playing the demo, you can cancel a combo at any time with the right stick roll. Then, you're free to block instantly upon dodging.

I completed the whole game without using any skills or remembering any combos. Most of the time it's just randomly pushing buttons and switching stances, you don't need skill for it. It's fun and great, but saying the combat system with the stances works, is bullshit. It could have worked, yes.
"Randomly"? You sure you're not actually just playing the game, i.e. pressing the right buttons, switching into the right stances? You did say something about harder difficulty levels before ...

Man, GS captures... don't they know they can get a nice, and relatively inexpensive HDMI capturer and use that for PS3 as well as X360 and have framebuffer quality grabs with ease.
Good luck capturing the HDMI output of a retail PS3, since it has HDCP enabled at all times.

In this thread at Doom9, a device is mentioned that supposedly strips the HDCP from the signal: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=913048#post913048

Here's the device: http://www.spatz-tech.com/spatz/HDMI-2X.htm

Also, there was a bit about the HDFury being able to make the HDMI/HDCP video signal from a PS3 to be able to be used on any sort of input.

Here's their site: http://www.hdfury.com/

And here's a video of it in action: http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=17135

Awesome!

Also, they are having a warhawk competition at 3Rooms

Prizes For Warhawk Competition At 3Rooms 13/09

So you know what you are playing for, the winner will receive a signed (and it’s poster size! - no messing here) Heavenly Sword print of Nariko, a trophy and a boxed copy of Heavenly Sword, with second place winning a trophy and a boxed copy of Heavenly Sword and third place winning a trophy. It’s game on…

so i can pick up this game tomorrow (preordered) but i'm waiting for sony to send me a new ps3. i don't think i'm going to buy it, though. i'm currently playing through bioshock and so far it's one of the best games i've ever played.

i vowed to cut back on FPS this year but with Bioshock, Halo 3 and Orange Box I don't think I'm going to make good on that promise! :lol

in fact, i think FPS might be all i play all holiday season ha ha

Sure, you have to switch stances now and then. You can switch to ranged when there are a lot of enemies up close. You have to switch to power when you're attacked by strong enemies etc.

But when taking the initiative yourself, you can move on and on and push buttons quite randomly.

THIS was their full intention: http://blogs.ign.com/Heavenly_Sword/2007/08/29/

As a GAMER and not an eejit, I prefer to PLAY games how they are meant to be played by a gamer, and not by an eejit.

I get bored of button mashing, I get hit by enemies, I die without timing (in demo) - I thus, to alleviate this, experiment with the combat system, find the depth, learn the combos. I do this for fun, as I like PLAYING games for FUN.

I like to watch the game as I'm playing and concentrate on what I'm doing, because I find that fun - I am not my grandmother, or a disinterested dog who don't know what to press, and aren't interested in finding out more than the simplistic. Hey, but since Ninja Theory have created an engine that provides both - I can enjoy it, my gran can enjoy it, and so can my dog.

You can do what you like with the combat engine, depending on your preference and skill - that's called empowerment, and not discrimination.

I could go through life surviving on only eating porridge, but I'd enjoy it a hell of a lot more if I experimented and had a varied diet, challenging myself to the flavours and dishes made available to me.:D

I think it works....it's the best way to reach conclusions...to a certain extent.

I'll be picking up the game tomorrow for certain along with several other friends.

This will help restore my faith after Lair's flubs.

I will be trading Lair in for this, and forgetting that it ever happened.

That was sort of my plan as well though I'm not sure if EB Australia will accept it (since it's not released here yet).

:lol How much credit is EB giving for LAIR?

Who knows... actually I'm heading to Gamecrazy, but I have a hunch I'm not the first person to trade it in... hopefully it will get me $30 towards Heavenly Sword.

What a pleasant surprise! I was under the impression that the game wouldn't be released till Thurs. but I just got the call from Gamestop saying that it will be in tomorrow afternoon. Sucks that I won't be able to play it until the weekend though.

Hrmm I usually don't trade in games, but if I can get $30 or so I will do it. :)

i'm hoping they pull a zone of enders 2 with the sequel because a lot of the criticism reminds me a lot of the first zoe.

Regardless of how well the game turns out, I'm sure they'll be a Heavenly Sword inspired porn. Not saying that's necessarily a good thing for the franchise, but I bet it'll be one of the better game-to-movie translations.

is there really much game-inspired porn? afaik only wow and mario have had that 'honor.' oh, and i guess final fantasy x, but i file japanese porn under 'horror.'

Woah hopefully they don't drop it tommorow although I could see a lot of people trading in LAIR for HS. I usually dont trade games because I don't like screwing over the devs, or benefitting EB for that matter. But....It's LAIR.

Generally I don't like to trade in games, but about once a year I'll go through and purge my collection, weeding out all the stuff I'll never play again.

Looking at Gamespot's captures, it really is clear that the game is using anti-aliasing (despite what others suggested). The edges are very smooth and clean. Foliage is a tad messy, but we already knew what they were doing there.

The game uses 4x multisampling anti-aliasing

Foliage(at least in that shot) is texture cut-outs. Hardware MSAA does nothing for that - it's nothing specific to HS or their HDR implementation like some people want you to believe, it's just how all current graphics hw works.

Remote Play does not work. Sorry guys. :(

Also, game is awesome, and all the bad reviews kinda have it wrong in my extremely humble opinion. Though the game is fairly short, the amount of action you get is very consistent. After-touch using the sixaxis is something you have to get used to, but it's a good thing you can turn it off. Love Bohan btw, he's very cool evil lord with his apparent flaws. Well played by Andy Serkis.

It's a good action title, and the Hell mode you get when clearing the game demands all of your attention while fighting.

Toronto Sun is gushing over how the digitial acting in this game is unlike others and actually make you feel for it all:

I wholeheartedly agree and I really hope that this game is a huge success, particularly because of the efforts put towards its cinematic aesthetic

Hopefully it will force other studios to step up their game...

for me personally, my motivation for buying this game right now has been:

60% for story, presentation and cinematics

and 40% for actual gameplay

I know HS is really pushing that aspect and its a large reason why i've been interested in it from the get go

So, this should be in stores today? I received the Gamespot robot woman call last night suggesting that it would be. I suppose we'll find out...

Looks to be shaping as the third person hack and slash adventure for non-"hardcore fans of the genre"... would explain why I'm drawn to it so much D;
Precisely. It's the same thing GoW was going for, really. I know DMC and NG fans sometimes like to rag on GoW (and HS will probably fall in the same group), but they should realize that even though it's technically the same genre, emphasis is put on different things to appeal to different group of people.

I honestly doubt anyone seriously thinks less of DMC for example, just because GoW is his/her preferred game. I know I don't.
