I just picked up HS today, I am going to pop it in a few minutes. I am still wrapped up in FF1 for the PSP lol.

Normally I might have passed on HS but since there isn't much else on the PS3 that appeals to me (that I don't already own) I decided to pick it up.

I'm enjoying it so far. The beginning had me worried, and I have to say I still don't love Nariko (everyone else makes up for it). Once you get to the section in the demo (and beyond) its great. The combat system works really well.

There's plenty of room for improvement if a sequel is coming. The puzzles are really weak. Somebody get Cory Barlog on that shit!

PS: If you're not playing this in 5.1 (or better), stop playing.

I actually really like Nariko as a character. The problem is that everyone else in the game besides her and Shen is a huge goofball (but in a good way). The hero almost always play's the straight man (woman). But I really started liking her
in her exchanges with Whiptail. What a catfight! Rawr!

The puzzles never really extend beyond hit a switch, pull a lever, but it's an action game, so I'm not too upset. Not like Devil May Cry's puzzles are any good. "puzzles." Heh.

I really am enjoying the hero sequences, but that one against
Flying Fox
was fucking hard! You had to be right on the buttons!

There are some vistas in the game that just BLOW MY MIND.

I wanted to play the game tonight, I really did. But I'm too tired, and I want to enjoy it when I can at least see better than a half-blur through my eyes. Constant 16 hour work days really suck... At least I installed it, but I didn't want to start.

For all the good the game offers, single player in Resistance never quite left me in any real amazement. I guess even though I was satisfied, I was never quite amazed, and the game didn't feel as high budget as I though it should have been, or something. I know multiplayer is second to none, but I'm not much into multiplayer FPS.

Yeah, the graphics are incredible. Shame the framerate doesn't quite lock it in, or I would be willing to say this is the best-looking game currently available.

and Seriously.....Story of the Year gaming wise so far.

Better than BioShock? Or is it because the presentation is so much better in the cutscenes than in pretty much every other game?

The scene where Kai is trying to
eat the worm
is fucking brilliant :lol

She keeps going to chomp down, and Nariko interrupts her with another question.

I picked this up today, and while the frame rate does really annoy me at some points of the game, it doesn't ruin the whole game for me. I will say that it really pulls you out of the moment though when you have these frame hiccups. Really a downer.

Strangely enough, there aren't any noticeable framerate hiccups during the action, but there are plenty when you're walking around and looking at the scenery.

Hahahaha, I'm in the middle of
Kai's chapter after Nariko fights in the pit. The scene where she has to get the West Tower commander's password is great. "Maybe I'll hit your WEAK POINT for MASSIVE DAMAGE!"
See, devs don't take themselves that seriously either :)

Ok I definitely love it. The first chapter is kinda weak but then it gets better and better... and finally playing that "old E3 demo" area is kinda unreal. :lol The wait was like, forever.

Bioshock's got the better overall story. But HS scores a lot of points for its acting and directing. Honestly, they tell their stories in different ways, so you're going to get different things out of them, but both are really quite good.

I did notice that. I dunno, for a game that was hyped as much as it was, I would expect things like frame rate to be non-issues. I'm still enjoying my play through, just not as much. I am really digging the story though.

I definitely think the frameiness in some areas is not stuff that could be polished out. I think we've got some streaming problems...

...those kinds of hiccups (see: NG Sigma) are making me wonder if the BR drive in the PS3 is not fast enough.

Sadly it's not hard to acheive when your game runs at a lowish framerate with tearing. NT fix this issue with HS2 and you have a sale.

Was it me or is the hit detection in the level where Kai has to get to Nariko a little off. I'd have soldiers standing right next to me and my arrows just went through them. No point blank shots allowed?

Also, one other complaint. Those dialogue boxes that serve as your tutorial took way too long on the screen. I do not need such a long time to read two lines of text telling me to press square. It wouldn't be so unforgivable if they also didn't pause the whole game on you.

Anyway, I finished the game. I'll stick with my initial score of six out of ten as well as my previous complaints. The story was overblown and the melodrama was through the roof. And if that wasn't enough, I get the feeling they made everybody else a goofball to try and compensate. At the end, I was just rolling my eyes.

Now bring on Folklore.

Hey, those prompts go away right when you do exactly what it tells you to do.

And how you can call acting better than that you'd see in most films overblown and melodramatic, I'll never know. The characters are larger-than-life, but that's a choice they made in developing the game.

Just finished my fight with Roach, what a fun ride, I'm having a great time, the cutscenes are great, some of them are hilarious. The sixaxis shooting is fun now that I've gotten the hang of it.

But the whole game paused on me on every single prompt. After what was a long time it finally unpaused and let me proceed to do the move. It's not like I didn't try to do everything I could after about two seconds on the pause screen.

I wasn't calling the acting overblown, I was calling the story overblown and melodramatic. Personally, I think the voice actors did what they could with the script they were given which, IMO, was not all that great.

Just played through chapter one, the game is much better than I thought it would be from the demo. I love it. My only problem is the horrible jerkiness from the frame rate and the six axis controls are kinda weird for awhile. I did horrible on that
bow section..
The next six axis part wasn't nearly as bad for me.

Got it today and I just finsihed it, already. Very short ride. I had some fun with it but I can see why some people might not want to pay 60 dollars for it. At least you can watch all of the cutscenes. Kai was just awesome.

Man I'm falling in love with the characters especially KAI.

Anybody else feel bad for Roach :(

Honestly this game gets better and better. I'm really enjoying it.

I'm finally good enough to really enjoy the combat and when attacks, counters and rolls all work together, it's every bit as enjoyable as DMC (not as deep, of course).

You can do juggle combos too :lol it's a bit tough at first though.

There are 6 chapters but the last is just the final boss in multiple parts. The 5th chapter is also very short. There's 6 levels in chapter 1, 11 levels in chapters 2 and 3, 7 in chapter 4, and then 4 in 5 and 6. So for anyone playing the early parts and wondering how far they are, I guess the part where you fight Whiptail the second time then play as Kai is about halfway.

One good thing is that it isn't short because it just suddenly ends, like the developers ran out of time or because they want it to be the first part of a trilogy or whatever. It's a complete story with a satisfying climax. It's all pretty well wrapped up in that 6 hours.

I think I only played 2 or 3 multiplayer games, just a few minutes each. Barely touched it.

Single player is what I'm talking about. I only bought the game because there wasn't much else to get but it really surprised me. It's the reason I'll be buying the PS3 Ratchet and Clank game whenever I get a PS3 again even thought I never played a Ratchet game before - those people at Insomniac know good gameplay.

HS is amazing so far... Regardless of it's shortness, it's still the most cinematic and beautiful game I've ever played. IGN was on crack to give it a 7 -- shortness be damned.

The cutscenes are amazing (scripting and acting in them is actually quite fantastic)... I've chuckled more than a few times during a cutscene -- Kai is all sorts of awesome (MASSIVE DAMAGE!).

9/10 for me -- only reason it's not 10/10 in my book is because of the shortness, everything else is perfect (definitely going to play through it a couple of times at least). I can't wait for an HS 2 or anything else from Ninja Theory.

I really am surprised at how cinematic it feels -- never had a game come close to this feeling. It really feels like a game version of a fun summer block buster like 300 or something (has better script and story than most too).

I played through the first chapter last night.

1- Framerate, wtf is going on here? Quite often it's so freaking choppy it ruins the experience.

2- Jerky battle animations - it seems like Nariko wants to be a 2D fighter character with so much skipped frames. So far this is my biggest complaint - for most of the combos you can't even see what the hell is going on except a huge blue swirl.

3- Auto-blocking is bad. I said it before in other impressions of the demo, and I'll say it again: AUTO-BLOCKING IN A GAME WHERE YOU CAN GET ATTACKED FROM BEHIND WHILE YOU'RE IN A COMBO IS BAD. The amount of times where I was in an attack and all of a sudden an enemy comes up from behind and smacks me, where if there was no auto-blocking I would have had AMPLE time to block really suck. It happens way too often - GoW did it perfect in that aspect. You could interrupt anything with a block, and it worked wonders.

4- No jumping is also bad. When there's a pack of enemies and I'm trapped, my (at least for me) initial reaction is to jump the hell away from em, not do barrel rolls (lol) so push em away to get into a better position..

5- SIXAXIS proves once again that it's a bad idea. Controlling those arrows with the motion sensors proved impossible. The minute I turned it off, I could do headshots.

However..

6- Visually, it's stunning. Seriously, it's really, really good looking.

7- The in-game cut-scenes and videos are AMAZING. Voice acting is top notch, motion capture is amazing; King Bohan is one of the best animated characters I've seen in a long time. Shows that Gollum did it. :)

8- The general feel of the game is great. The atmosphere, Kai, the story, it all meshes together quite well.

All in all, I would say it's a wonderful experience marred by some puzzling gameplay design decisions but with perfect visual design.

If you get hit down, you can counter that hit down....as you fall to the ground, whip up the sixaxis (or press x) and you will jump up, grab said enemy with your chain, and finish them. I suggest you download the walkthrough video from the Japan store, it shows how to use the combat system beautifully.

As for your want for jumping - bad habit.

Motion sensing, I always love - from flow to super rubadub, to warhawk. BUT i don't see how this is even a complaint for HS, as you can turn it off. So even mentioning it as a failure is poor. In fact you should put it in your plus column. "I don't like motion sensing, so the option to turn it off is a god send". Ninja theory thought about you too.

Have a fun! Enjoy!

Put some effort in it. It's not as fun with the stick.

That is actually great advice as I've never really played an action game this way. It explains A LOT.

Entering combos for speed stance is very different to entering them for power stance. In speed stance you can hit them in quite...speedy, whereas power stance you need to be more deliberate, watching each stroke of the sword to then enter the next button press. Therefore, the button presses connect to her moves directly. :)
