Official Heavenly Sword Thread - Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads

I was a bit confused on a small technicality, but is Kai
Nariko's sister, half-sister or just spiritual sister? Kai's mother was killed in front of her, so her mother can't be Nariko's mother (who as Nariko said died during or shortly after her birth)

Nariko found Kai and looked after her, after Kai's clan got wiped out

It were tough. :p

Games are meant to be tough. 8)

And you could block them according to the colour representing which stance you should be in. I blocked them. Though many times I tried to counter and I haven't got that down.

Local BB had this one so I had to pick it up. :D So far so good! Finished the first chapter and am pretty impressed.

Bohan is the man. Definitely one of the coolest characters ever in a videogame. I love his dialog.

Where can I get the OST? It is heavenly. (No pun intended)

when I made that mission, i got to counter a few times.. :)

You had to:
select aura-stance first and leave the aura-stance before countering with triangle, took too long on the speedstance to manage it, but went ok on the power-missiles he throws

Btw, the scene with Bohan tapping his codpiece and staring at a bound Nariko is probably one of the my most memorable moments in all of gaming. I laughed really hard.

I love Bohan! Someone needs to make a compilation video of all his dialog. I laughed when Nariko started screaming and Bohan mimicked her jokingly.

that scene was pretty funny

the scene where I laughed out loud was when Kai was asked what the password was and she just mumbled.

The photos posted on the previous page are extra-ordinary! It makes me wanna play this game NOW!

And here's my question for people who own the game, is the frame rate just as bad as it was on the demo? Does it spoil the whole experience?

It gets even worse in some areas near the end. It's detrimental to the gameplay but it's bearable.

After playing to around chapter 4 the frame rate is pretty bad. Action games should really have a higher frame rate.

I'm not much use here anymore, but here's some more reviews...

http://www.ugo.com/ugo/html/article/?id=17821

B+ (9/10?)

" I've gone through Heavenly Sword once already and am starting my second run and there wasn't a moment I became frustrated to the point where I needed a break or got bored. The game is pure instant gratification and doesn't insult my intelligence as a gamer by having me constantly do mundane exercises such as moving boxes onto platforms to open doors while fighting annoying monsters. That is where God of War lost me, and thankfully Heavenly Sword doesn't repeat those mistakes."

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/gadgets_and_gaming/article2452254.ece

8/10

"he characters look great, the swordplay is spectacular and its eastern-flavoured locations are cinematically displayed. The gameplay, however, lacks intensity and sophistication"

http://gamernode.com/Reviews/4208-Heavenly-Sword/index.html

8.5/10

"Heavenly Sword is a fantastic game, and the best game on the PS3. If you don't mind great games being short, pick it up. If you do mind, rent it. Either way, if you own a PS3 you need to play this game."

Just beat the game, took me about 5-6 hours roughly and I died around 6 times (three of which came from
fighting Bohan as the Raven King
).

Very satisfying game, regardless of length. The combat system can be pretty iffy at times as it makes the game very fun and frustrating to play.

Hopefully they will work out the kinks for the sequel.

I've "finally" beaten the game.. and my watch says it took about 6 hours. Clearly not long enough IMO.. twice that long would be perfect. It's kinda like when I went through Beyond Good & Evil for the first time, it felt like it was over too soon. The pacing could have been better too; you jump from a place and step into another completely different the minute after. It's not like in God of War, where you stay in a place for half an hour, fight, do some platforming and solve puzzles.

But it's a pretty good game overall, the framerate wasn't really a problem for me, but I wish it was smoother (more like Chapter 2 & 4).. The fighting is much cooler than I thought, but I would get rid of the long range stance and place a God of War like block button instead. The aftertouch is nice and I do not recommend turning it off. Kai is awesome, Nariko is awesome, Bohan is one of the best villain in video game history.. if you've played, you know why :lol .

It's also probably the best looking game on the market along with Gears of War. The animations, cutscenes, dialogues, story and soundtrack are all.. uh.. heavenly! Kicking a table is the most satisfying action ever. All in all, it's an awesome game, buy it or you're part of the problem.. because it would truly deserve a sequel.

I give it a 8.999987777775566343333 out of 10. Just because I can.

How? I got up to chapter 4 with 6 hours and I didn't even die once aside from boss fights.

Well i am not timing myself, I doubt you are either. But I am sure I played somewhere between 5-6 hours, and I died a few times, especially in the final boss. I was not going fast, I was just playing the game, its insanely short, still good though.

Wow, I can't believe it's really this short. It took me 5-6 hours.

What can I say? It has outstanding presentation values, beautiful graphics, excellent voice acting, and a good script to boot. It's a real pity the combat system feels like a mess.

The Good:
- Graphics
- Presentation
- Script
- Twing Twang

Ok:
- Story (nothing really special, nor bad)

The Bad:
- Puzzles (if they can even be called that)
- Combat (it really feels like a mess... sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't, which makes it rather hard to depend on)
- Length (6 hours... REALLY!)
- QTEs (I hate them)
- Lack of a properly devised area/story/section to introduce combat training

All those negative things said, overall, the game is more than the sum of its parts, so it's not really a bad game. Just a good, really short one.

I'm loving this game. If you want the sequel to turn into an AAA game, listen to these suggestions.

Combat:
- Add a manual block
- Add a jump button

The issues I have with the combat system are pretty few but they definitely hinder the experience greatly. They need to remove the disconnection between the ground and aerial portions of an attack. This is where the jump button comes in. To do an aerial attack, catch an opponent in the air and begin attack! Simple. Manual block that is limited to a certain amount of hits. Say after 4 enemy hits that you blocked by holding the button down, your ability to block is gone for 3 seconds.

Platforming:

Use Kai for a platforming portion of the game. I'm actually surprised they didn't do this in Heavenly Sword. Wouldn't it have been cool if the heavenly sword was hidden by Bohan in some hidden area inaccessible by Nariko and Kai was used to retrieve it. They could do some serious Sands of Time type platforming with those environments.

Doesn't know that "You" is used in both the singular and plural
almost done with chapter 2, still loving it.

the boss bottles are just plain awesome! and unlike other action games; the bosses are interesting, memorable and worth fighting. I absolutely loved whiptail and that fox guy! I even replayed the fox again right after beating him :lol

Quit using the sixaxis for the aftertouch. Makes a HUGE difference.

After completing chapter one and most of chapter two, definatly a must have game. I can see myself replaying these levels many times over. I thought God Hand's cutscenes were funny, but HS' are downright histerical! Excellent job Ninja Theory!

I do wish the game taught you some of the many combos in the game instead of relying on the player to open the combo list. =P

Kicking tables has never been so fun!

Well, I spent probably 17-18 hours on it, through first playthrough, due to my problems with General Fox, used longer time on this game than on The Darkness.
I can't believe you people say you finnished it on 6 hours, I feel like there is atleast 4 hours of video in it...
Best 60$ spent in a very long time, alot of very satisfying experiences, and I tought the story were awesome, Kai is probably the coolest game-characther I've seen since the Wing Commander days.. :)

so it doesn't have shit that will show up in home when it hits. if so, that sucks. i would figure that all of sony's first party games would have unlockable trophies by now for home or however that's gonna work.

Not even close, go run the videos straight through, its probably like an 1 hour and a half, two hours the most.

Hard to say. I imagine the trophy room could look through your saved games and give you the appropriate trophies.

The camera zooms in as close as it can, and go out again when needed, I think..
The camera works really well in this game, i never needed to use the L2 and R2 button to control it atleast. :)

for all of you who beat it in 6 hrs ish, did you do that with max medals or did you just play through it?

Personally with all the combo options, I try to get max medals every playthrough before moving on too far so I can use the unlockable moves right away... As I like to mix up my combos a lot, obviously the time I play through this game will be probably 2-3 times longer than the standard run through, but I kind of view it like a RPG where you got to unlock the moves to get to the next area :D

I rarely replay games with the purpose of getting collectible items. They have to be REALLY great to motivate me to do so (Ninja Gaiden Black was one of them, and the extras are really cool mission modes). That said, I ended with something like 96 medals if I remember correctly.

I am not really sure what I think of the sixaxis for moving the arrows with Kai early in the game there.

I really am enjoying the game though!

Has anyone else noticed that the shadows in the game are...shall I say...bouncy?
What do you mean by bouncy? Anyway, shadows are far from perfect but there a few reasoons for that:
1) there are no precomputed shadows/light maps in HS, everything is compute in realtime, and everything cast and receive shadows
2) when you have in the same frame objects that are very close and very distant objects is really difficult to distribute shadow maps resolution in a way that shadows on close and distant objects are both decent
3) Pay attention to the scene were you fight against hundreds of soldiers: the sun in the scene is just above the horizon, which means almost every soldier gets rendered in the 3 1024x1024 shadow maps, in the z pre pass..and in the color pass. So you might see 500 soldiers on screen, but the game is rendering 2500 of them, each one casting and receving shadows from every other soldier. Umh..maybe that was a bit of an overkill..:lol

Okay, I blazed through for a while without dying once, then dead-ended on that frigging part where you play as Kai,
protecting the master dude and he takes he sweet-ass time walking across the bridge
.

There is much rage in my heart.

Any tips? I'm doing the aftertouch deal with the Sixaxis motion controls... is it easier if I shut that
shit
off?

Otherwise, nice game so far, pretty graphics. Framerate's a shame. This and Lair in a week's span makes me have serious concerns about the Sixaxis' motion controls, but otherwise it's fun.
