The game is gorgeous. Acting is the best I've ever seen in a videogame.

I usually hate rentals but HS is not only short but it has little replay appeal. $60 for a maximum 6 hrs of fun is too much for most people. Also, if I didn't pay $60, I probably wouldn't have even bothered to finish it. HS got many 8s from reviewers but many of the reviews read like 7s instead. There are too many significant flaws in HS for it to get a 8. Once again, DO NOT BUY!

I had read this aswell in reviews that it were 6 hours long, it also said you could play it as a button-masher..
If you watch the videos, and never die, you might finnish it on 6 hours if you're lucky..

However, I played it as a button-masher, I spent 4-5 hours alone second time I met
general flying fox
..
Since I didn't get any help on the various forums, I've logged into mycheats.com to read the super-strategy guide, to learn wich combo I must use on him, when my fingers get well.

A very nice feature with this game, is the level selector in Purgatory wich opens up the levels as you progress through the game, you can play any level you want, wheneveryou want.

So today when I got a friend on a visit, he got to try different parts of the game, even tough I were stuck on
general flying fox
..
And this is a game you will want to show off to your friends..

It's in my opinion the best entry option into the action-adventure genre.
And it's also a game were six-axis is used well, with the aftertouch.

Kai's missions are fantastic fun and a nice change of pace, I actually like her missions better than Nariko's missions except the first one, before I learnt to control it, even if Nariko's missions is very fun aswell, especially when pulling off the superstyle-moves. :)

My favourite cinema-part so far is when Kai got the password for the armoury. That were freaking hillarious..

It's a great showcase game, definately worth owning.

I'm still not sure how anyone can "purely" buttonmash through the game and not die or fail at least several times in the process.

I think the reason why they said you can button-mash through this game is because amazing shit happens, it's like Tekken on steroids if you don't have a clue on what you're doing.

You'll manage the demo easily with button mashing, but not the game. :)

I learned to counter attack but it still seems more efficient to just hold R1 and press whatever. Of course, you have to wait for an opening but it should be extremely easy for anyone that's played DMC, NG or GOW. The female ninjas were especially annoying to counter. Everytime you counter one of them, there'll be a 1 button QTE. The game seems to be sporadic in recognizing my response although I pressed it correctly everytime.

It definitely isn't a button masher. I always keep a look out to counter when in 2+ man fights. How hard is hell mode? Did anyone tried it? I'm too scared.

At the final boss now, and honestly it's a fucking joke how annoying this fight is. There's useless shit all over the place so you can barely see him, half the time the camera is facing a way that is of no real use or it doesn't show you a thing, and for some reason even though I'm hitting the button correctly it won't return half the projectiles (get pretty much every yellow, yet somehow miss all the blue). Not to mention you can't see shit when he has his wings out.

Really annoying me, and a very poor end to the game.

Huh? I could counter with my eyes closed based on timing and what sound he makes when he does it. I did it with Whiptail. Also, his hand gestures are very different and very visible.
Maybe you just have to clear out the scrubs with some ranged attack. I cleared them out and eventually they stopped coming in the circle. But I had no problem seeing Bohan's projectiles anyways.

There are certainly parts of the combat that do feel a bit off, I think overall it is a deep and rewarding system.

Having just finished it, I must say I really, really enjoyed it. The story presentation was topnotch. I could only wish that some other titles with longer and a bit deeper story lines could be presented like HS was. With the length and scope they were aiming for in HS, I think they absolutely nailed it.

If you can get over the length, I definitely recommend it.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Only seems to occur with actual realtime scenes (rather than the pre-recorded movies). Perhaps the framerate troubles actually cause this to occur?

I only noticed it in one scene. It seems like LOD/loading issues actually. I am really curious about the BD drive causing streaming problems.

Yeah, I notice it in the between chapter sequence when Nariko is talking not the pre-rendered stuff. Otherwise graphically I think it looks nice, the framerate does struggle sometimes so far (only through Ch. 1) and there is some tearing but not as bad as say God of War II.

I can see the projectiles easily, and I'm not sure why I can't return the blue ones as easily as the yellow, it's pretty fucking annoying. Clearing then out is easy, but I don't see why they're there, they can't touch you can when you walk into them they fly all over the place anyway.

You can have a half second to return the counter. It's usually better to see it land on you then pressing the button. You will be able to hold the projectile for a bit so maybe you are pressing it too early. It has to hit you before you hit the button or you end up attacking which leaves you open.

And those soldiers are there for visual effect. If they weren't there, it'd be less epic. I didn't find them bothering the gameplay at all.

Just finished it,
yes it only arrived this morning
. Framerate and shadowing aside, it was a fantastic cinematic experience from beginning to end. Really, really good voice talent in the game from Kai... I recall back a few months ago when we were seeing some footage of Kai screaming
after realising Flying Fox killed her mother
I said it felt really false and well annoying more than anything and I hoped there was some context to it. Having played through that part I have to take back my words as it worked really well in the end. In fact
after disabling the shitty Sixaxis control
I found myself enjoying Kai's stages much more than I thought I would. Kai Kai, Kai Kai Kai. Kai.

Err.

The framerate didn't ruin my experience, though it did get on my tits during the
siege with the glider ninja whores where you're following Shen
because there were so many enemies and it's like 2 frames per second. The shadowing did kinda mar the game though, more than I thought it would. For those moments where the performance capture was spot on and the voice talent excellent, the shadowing was always present to take a big dump on all that effort. I had a few cutscenes which were slightly desynched and one even crashed my game
Kai's guard impersonation
. I also noticed quite a bit of framerate stutter was attributed to HDD access background loading at the beginning or at transition points in stages. It also caused stuttering in the pre-recorded cutscenes.

On a whole I certainly don't feel like I should have rented. Oh and I thought Nina Kristensen said in an interview that
"sacred genitals" wasn't there any more? The liar.

One last thing though... SOUND FUCKING TRACK, NOW!

Didn't you get the memo? Only Xbox 360 and Wii games get ranked on a 10 scale. All (exclusive) PS3 games have to be ranked on a scale of 0-8.5. That's the law.

All bitterness and kidding aside, the only thing I don't like so far is the long restart times when you die, especially during a boss fight where you can't skip through the cinema which adds to the re-load time.

Same here honestly. I swear iv'e never played such a piece of shit (excuse my french) since n3 seriously. The thing that fraustrates me is that I played the final battle pulling out a varied amount of moves I learned and I only seem to connect at random moments. So I got pissed and just pressed square throughtout and same thing in fact it's easier just doing that. It seems like it's just programmed for your life point to be at a certain level at different times in the battle. And another thing where the heck did they get their influence from. It seems like they just thought they'd throw in some stuff from different boss battles they've seen before just for cool factor. Whats with the beams and scaling the ground.

I dunno about the last boss. It took me 3 attempts and each time I knew exactly why I died and it didn't feel overly cheap. Though there was a cheapness element, because each death was from suddenly not being able to return any of the projectiles despite having no problems earlier. I will say that it definitely was the only part of the entire game where the camera fell apart. I did like the battle on the whole though, especially once you learn the right way to fuck him up.

the entire last battle was easy once you whore out the right analog stick, you can get by it by hitting then rolling away and it becomes very easy but still takes a lot of time.

and Kai is an awesome character, she was the best character in the game.

Just got this game last night and finished 3 chapters. Overall a great game, but in terms of 3rd person action I still like the God of War series, Ninja Gaiden and Devil may Cry 3 better. That being said this one seems to hold it's own so far, but I disagree with many of the reviews praising the use of the motion control. I ended up turning that shit off and going analog since it seemed to vary from unresponsive to over-responsive in the blink of a second. That part where you destroy the turrets in chapter 1 was very frustrating until I went analog.

Looking at the game now I wish they had designed it with co-op. Maybe have the levels designed where Nariko and Kai could fight simultaneously with nariko obviously going in for melee battles and kai using vantage points to take out opponets long range or disable obstacles. This would have been a very cool feature in a 1st party game of this status to show how Sony intends to make PSN as useful for games as XBL is for 360 games.

The only real issue I have is with the length, its criminally short, but had a blast playing it, its outstanding IMO. When you get the countering down you can just start these long combos tearing up one person then jumpping over to the next. Its a great total experience for a game, it just ends really fast. About to go through hell mode.

Can someone explain the story to me I think I might have missed something along the way.

Ok so Nariko dies and before she does she says the sword isn't from heaven or just that it doesn't have any of this mythical quality that everyone praised it for. So then where the heck is the sword from. Are they trying to say it was her bond with Kai that made her into this goddess like figure.? And was she saying Kai is the person the sword belongs to.? Honestly i'm lost slightly with it all.

I just beat it. This is a really great game. In spite of it being short I definitely think i got my money's worth. Great motion capture, great graphics, great sound and gameplay. I don't think its game of the year or anything but something to make me happy i have a ps3

Fix your spoiler tag, Nolan.

Quickly.

Nariko said that in her bitterness at being treated like a curse by the tribe, she convinced herself that the sword was just a sword and not supernatural. This was all before she actually took up the sword herself, and felt it's power.

I saw the ad for this a bit ago.

I believe it is supposed to be ambiguous. For me, there is little doubt that the sword is an instrument of heaven. She glows like an angel and is even able to heal Kai in the end. She seems to use the power of the sword to remove Kai's mental illness too. I doubt a instrument of evil could do this.

My own theory is that the sword is a test. If one is able to avoid the corruption the swords power in battle brings you, it grants you godlike powers because you are worthy. I think it only does this when the wielder is motivated purely by self-sacrifice for a higher cause. In Nariko's case, this motivation is to give Kai a better future. The sacrifice would be meaningless without the death of the wielder, thus the reason Nariko dies in the end even after achieving the powers of a goddess. The sword allows her to achieve her goal, but still exacts its payment in the form of the wielders life.

However, videogames are like soap operas, I doubt this is the last of Nariko...

This is a pretty good summary.

As Kai says, and which makes me think your removal comment is a pretty good observation, is that Nariko
masters the sword.
She doesn't just use it to kill...though she obviously kills plenty. She uses it for much more than that.

Just finished. Took me three days of playing around 2-3 hours each. I'd say about 9 hours is a generous estimate.

I still think that the game is an 8, simply because of framerate, some ai/balance issues, length, and a little lack of polish (wonky camera).

However I enjoyed it a lot. I'm going to do hell mode and get all the medals. This isn't going to beat Ninja Gaiden or DMC, but it's definitely worth playing and enjoying.

When you're fighting so many guys at once, it feels really good dispatching them quickly and fluidly. Almost like a playable action movie.

Thats it, I beat it, yikes. I think six hours is generous, I didn't clock myself but it had to be around 5 hours or so. I feel like I accidently finished the game, like I entered a warp and skipped to the end, it is way too short, to simple of a game. But I have to give it to them, the final battle was excellent, thats how you do an epic final battle. There was even a touch of Zelda during that fight, I like it. Overall the story isn't even that great, its how its presented thats so amazing, but the actual plot is not much different than any action game. Thank god there is a hard mode, cause it would only take me about an hour or two to get the three medals in the stages I missed.

I will play this game again, not cause its so amazing that I have to start it over again, but beacuse I am not satisified with what I played, I feel I need more time to fully enjoy the action.

Thank god I rented it cause I would be beyond pissed if I paid $60 for this game. Its a 7 range game for me.

I take back what I said about it earlier maybe it was because I was tired. The game is brilliant in many ways and I think it's the best acting in a game iv'e seen so far this gen definately actually. Kai and Nariko in particular are so brilliant I hope Kai comes back in the sequel she's just such a loveable character.

Thematically, the
healing of Kai cannot be overlooked. It occupies a prominent place in the closing cutscene. And the power of the sword finally abandons Nariko when she finishes the healing.

This story could have come straight from a How to Write a Shakespearean Tragedy for Dummies.
HS even has 5 acts.... In Shakespeare, the story surrounds a protagonist who rises in glory and power, but ultimately falls due to an error in their own judgement and character. This is normally hubris. The fall, normally occurring in act three (I think, its been a while since I read Shakespeare), is followed by two acts where the protagonist learns that he has doomed himself, but he comes to accept his fate and try to right his wrongs before the doom catches up with him. Nariko taking up the sword in hatred is her flaw, just like Hamlet stabbing Pulonius (name???), an innocent but annoying man. From the moment she picks up her sword, her doom is sealed.

Through the first acts we see Nariko's hubris grow as she dominates her opponents with her sword. Her hubris culminates when she abandons her father and her tribe. She feels she no longer needs her family, as she alone, with the help of the HS, can accomplish the revenge she desparately needs. Shortly after this, she is captured and must confront her helplessness without the sword. This is when Kai shows up to rescue her. Kai operates much like Nariko's daughter or younger sister in Nariko's heart, as Kai is the only person who was kind to her. Kai reminds Nariko of her more tender side, and we see Nariko's journey back to "goodness" begin. The final acts of the game have Nariko acknowledging her doom, but struggling to secure peace for Kai. But as Nariko journey continues, her heart gradually begins to open back up to her father and clan.

Again, I am reminded of Hamlet, who starts out a rash and hate filled man bent on revenge, but at the end is a thoughtful hero whose mind is at peace. Sadly, in all Shakespearean tragedy the highest moment in a character's progression comes right before death. Just so with Nariko. Nariko has been unspeakably violent in her quest. All the ball breaker moves still make me cringe. She single-handedly slaughters 500 troops by herself. Yet in the end, she is finally at peace. This is most evident with the peace she makes with her father, and her will to save her clan even though they despised her. In a story characterized by violence, the juxtaposition of the sword and Nariko's final act being a healing is touching. In this act, we know that Nariko (and the sword) are more than just killing machines. Nariko's soul has triumphed over her demons to become a woman truely "heavenly."

Obviously, HS does not reach the loft heights of Shakespeare. I am just saying it bears alot of similarities.

A welcome addition to my collection. Highly recommended.

Yeah...

I'm starting to wonder about these "speed run" claims myself. I'm not really sure it's possible to do this game in 5 hours. It took me 8 1/2 total, and I didn't die all that much first time through, and I pretty much ran straight through the army in the escape section of Chapter One, and wasn't worried about getting medals or finding pots either.

I'm going to go back and play through again before posting my impressions, but after the first play, I'm really, really glad I bought this game.

Where do you change difficulty?

I can't find it in the options menu, and I think I must have changed into Hell-mode accidentally or something, I'm on my 7th hour stuggling with the bossfight on chapter 4, and start to concider if I should just give up, it's impossible..

I know wich combo's I'm supposed to use him (thanks to the guide at mycheats.com), and everything.

However I can't seem to block his ranged attacks, or get to take life from him when he is
cloning 8 of himself and I'm going to start take his life from a very dark red into death
..

And is it possible to get to the life-bottles on wich is standing in the higher section?

Using ranged stance you can pop the canister along the edges. That is like an additional 3 health bars. This is the
