These Chicklet keyboards have spoiled me to the point I can't use an old style regular key keyboard.

So many typos and missed keys just typing this message.

I now see why Apple has been pushing these keyboards. They're so much nicer... and quieter. I can't use either an older Pro keyboard or this old shortie from an old iMac G3.

I've been meaning to ask, how's the auto correction in SL? Compared to say, the iPhone.

Is the SL autocorrection based on spelling though? I wish the iPhone had a spellcheck (in addition to its typing-check).

I wish I knew. Firefox doesn't support it and it's the only thing I ever enter text into. I guess I could try it out in Mail but I rarely send mail. My Mail.app is pretty much a "Forum Replies" notification system. And GOD DAMN THIS OLD KEYBOARD! Keys are so hard to press down! I'm not used to it!

Oh, and TextWrangler doesn't support it either. The other app I use most. (Though TW is rarely updated. Maybe BareBones will get an update out for SL maybe possibly. Or I'll have to email them and ask what the hell is the holdup.)

It would be useful if the icon showed some sort of notification that something was down there.

Yeah there's only a mark when you secondary click the dock icon, right? Hmm.

Also, how do hidden (CMD-H) windows react to Dock Expose? I'd assume, being hidden, they stay hidden...

Don't know why I'm asking. In 24 hours I'll have it. :lol

So, how much time do you think it will take to install Snow Leopard on a MBA with remote disk ? More than Leopard (wich was around 6 hours...) ?

Install speed is one of the things they've touted quite a bit. People have installed Snow leopard in as little as 20 minutes, so I'm sure you'll be in for a far shorter ride than you were with Leopard.

yeah I am thinking about getting it. Do you think it is worth it? (30 dollars off for me since im getting a new mac btw)

Depends what you want to use it for. iDisk is alright, namely for Windows friends of mine to be able to drop things into the Public folder, but for most other stuff Dropbox is used more often.

I do like syncing though. Pushing new contacts to my Mac, while not necessary, gives me a tingly feeling. Having my settings and stuff is also nice, but not quite a deal breaker, and I only have 1 Mac so I don't use Back to my Mac. I probably wouldn't have gone for it if it wasn't for Locate my iPhone. A tiny bit of insurance, I suppose. The rest can mostly be duplicated.

I got it for around 45, though.

Yeah, the Locate my iPhone feature is useful to me... iDisk would be useful since there are a lot of times where I need to access documents that will be on my mac which will be at home. I also probably have OCD, I really like when things are synced up and all my contacts from my phone to the computer are the same so I think I'll get it.

I want to have a new internal hard drive for my macbook available at the same time I decide to install snow leopard. I am also considering getting an external hard drive for time machine purposes.

I have never used Time Machine before. What would be the best way for me to back up all the info I have currently on my old internal hard drive to a new external hard drive, insert the new internal hard drive, and then bring all my material back from time machine onto my new internal hard drive? Would it be best for me to first update my old internal to 10.6, and then do all backing up? Or can I just back up with time machine on 10.5 and then install the new internal drive and clean install 10.6 on it? Also, how does Time Machine handle things like VMWare? Does it at all?

The best way would be to plug in your new external HD, when Time Machine asks if you want to use it to back up your data say yes (or turn TM on in System Preferences). This will take an hour or two depending on how much data you have.

After it's done, shut down your Mac and use a guide at www.ifixit.com to swap your old HD for your new one (make sure you have the necessary screwdrivers to do this). Once reassembled, pop in your Leopard disc, select your language and select Restore from Time Machine from the Utilities menu. Follow the prompts to restore your drive. I cannot recall if you have to partition your drive before, if so use Disk Utility to do this, make sure you select GUID partition table from the Options menu.

Then you will be all set to upgrade to Snow Leopard when it arrives. There is no reason to do a clean install, unless you enjoy manually restoring all your applications and data.

Things to note, if you use TM to backup a 10.5 system, 10.5 is what will be restored to your HD. You could upgrade to 10.6 then backup, install HD and restore, it makes no difference really. Over the past week I followed this exact process myself. It is safe, and fool proof.

Anyone have their copy ship in Canada yet? Shit, I should have just waited to buy it in a store. I can't even cancel my order online.

Just cancelled my Apple.com order. I'll pick it up at the local Reseller here tomorrow morning instead. :D
Did you call in to cancel your order? It wouldn't let me cancel or change mine 5 minutes after I made my order online.

Mine just shipped (UK store). It says allow 3 business days for delivery (so Monday), but my experience with the Apple Store suggests it'll come here on Saturday at the latest.

For what it's worth, they mention that the upgrade process may not be so smooth from Tiger -> Snow Leopard in the article.

If people going from Tiger -> Snow Leopard could wait a day or two to see what happens online, they could save themselves a bit of hassle by reading other people's results.

Is there any reason to get the box set now?

I am going to get the $29 upgrade disc and iLife 09. Also this thread just saved me a nice chunk of change. I owe the OP a drink.

I guess you can get the boxed set if you wanted to buy iLife and iWork. They're both $80 alone so really it's just another $10 on top of that for Snow Leopard. You're saving $20 compared to buying a la carte.

Blah. Just had an email from Amazon to say that my Snow Leopard will be delayed until Wednesday.

Still, I'm sure I can "obtain" it from elsewhere in the meantime. I knew those DVD9s would come in handy. :lol

Monday is a bank holiday, so if it doesn't arrive tomorrow or Saturday you'll have to wait until Tuesday.

IIRC it was pretty similar with Leopard, and that turned up just fine on release day.

I popped into my local "Apple Store" today and they told me they're only going to have about 75 copies and that they'll sell out in the first couple of hours. Looks like Apple have under-stocked. No surprise there. They obviously just want more press publicity, and they know it will work. I have to enroll tomorrow for college as well, so I'm praying that they're going to have a couple of copies left.

Not everything is analogous to the stupid shit that happens with videogames.

After all, purposely leaving the majority of your customers dry and pissing them off is great publicity, and I'm sure the Genius Bar welcomes the political move.

Added some reviews to the OP. I hope I get my copy tomorrow. Still showing as "Not Yet Shipped" even though 1-800-MY-APPLE says that it's prepared for shipping >_< Maybe I'll just pick up the Family Pack tomorrow >_<

You're actually lucky it's even being prepared. I probably don't have any chance of it coming my way tomorrow unless the site is way out of date.

Mine's in "Prepared to Ship" mode.

I got the family upgrade since I have a Mac Mini and two laptops to upgrade (even though my wife couldn't give two shits about this...facebook and people.com functionality will remain unchanged.)
