I've never gained HDD space after an OS install before.

Nope. They're all still turned on by default. And Rosetta is turned off by default. It's all backwards. So make sure you Customize before you install.StrikerObi said:I thought Snow Leopard's install option had languages and printer drivers turned off already? Isn't that how they're "saving" you 7GB of disk space?
Flying_Phoenix said:Oh I mis-interpreted the "!". My mistake. Anyway sorry if I annoyed you guys, but I already said I'd stop being sarcastic and that post that someone quoted I was being serious with. I really don't like the Finder.

It's a system preference (64-bit at that), not an InputManager or other hacks which can compromise stability or break whenever Safari is updated.

celebi23 said:They did. They gave it a Cocoa rewrite finally. Updates to the Dock, tweaks with previewing things with QuickLook. Lots of small things but they really do add up(friend from college is in the ADC & he let me mess around with his Mac Pro a bit. Had the GM installed on it)

You can trim videos, but the export options are ridiculously sad. For that alone I'm keeping 7 installed.Zaraki_Kenpachi said:I got a question... I remember someone saying they might upgrade the new quicktime in features so that they don't have a pro anymore. Did that actually happen or did that turn out to be a bad rumor? I don't remember what functionality it might add so I can't tell whether they did or not.

Yeah, I'm looking at you, Tiger users!the standard version of Snow Leopard is a bootable full install disc that doesnt actually check for the presence of Leopard in order to install. This also means that if, at a later time, you want to wipe your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, you wont have to first install Leopard and then run a separate Snow Leopard upgrade on top of it. (That sound you hear is a thousand IT managers sighing with relief.)

But damn if $600 wasn't too much. So much. Why not $500? Why $600? Bah. Anyone know where I can get a refurbished Mac mini with a C2D that will run H.264 nicely?
Tiger users can do the upgrade process. Time Machine isn't on Tiger..so if we are on tiger, do we have to at least do a full install? can we not install SL over tiger, keeping all of our settings and things like that? or is the simplest option to back it up on TimeMachine, install SL, then import everything?

Compromise for $550 with student discount?Jasoco said:I also have a G4 mini that I need to replace. It acts as my media server and backup server, but I want it to also act as my media player, but my G4 mini is unable to play H.264 at any good speed and can't run Snow Leopard.

I just saw that. If it was the $600 one for $500 I'd get it.Jtwo said:Apple has the 800$ one for 700$, lol.
I might be able to get my brothers student discount. If they recognize his school. (The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill in Philly)Phobophile said:Compromise for $550 with student discount?
Slurpy said:Are you serious? Although not numerous, there ARE several new front end features for SL, including exchange, new expose, new quicktime, etc. It is a Leopard document, and makes no reference to any of the changes. Being as such, some of the information would be flat out wrong and outdated. It would be extremely sloppy if thats what was included on the retail DVD, and not an updated Snow Leopard Welcome document.
Appleinsider said:While apparently not yet available online, AppleInsider has also been provided the "Welcome to Snow Leopard" document included in the retail disc. It highlights new features of the operating system update and many basics of Mac OS X.

Yes. Not sure about the Up to date disc.Ashhong said:so i can just get her the 29$ one and use that disc to go straight from 10.4-6?
what about the 10$ one, has it been confirmed if thats just an upgrade disc or anything?
The_Inquisitor said:You get a full version of Snow Leopard so you can do whatever you want.
_leech_ said:Wait, so the $29 upgrade can also do a clean install without Leopard already being present?

If you choose to customize your installation, youll notice that the installation of printer drivers is entirely different in Snow Leopard. In previous versions of OS X, you had the option of installing drivers for the printers of particular vendors. That was always a bit confusing: If I dont install HP drivers now, does that mean I wont ever be able to use HP printers? But Snow Leopard doesnt work that way. Instead, it automatically installs drivers for printers your computer has used in the past. If youre on a network, it installs drivers for the connected printers it finds out there, too. And it installs drivers for printers Apple considers popular.
The revamped installation process doesn't require an immediate reboot and saves space by changing how printer drivers are installed.
Apple has boasted that Snow Leopard requires less hard-drive space than earlier versions of OS X; believe it or not, this revamped print-driver system is the reason for most of that space savings. Turns out most of us are wasting gigabytes of hard-drive space on printer drivers that we dont need.
What happens if you encounter a strange, new printer? If youve got an Internet connection at that moment, you shouldnt have much trouble: Snow Leopard will automatically download and install the drivers it needs.
If you really need bullet-proof, instantaneous compatibility with a vast array of printers, you can opt to install all the driversyou just wont realize the disk-space savings you might have otherwise. But for most of us, Apples new printer installation method should be all but invisibleexcept for the reclaimed disk space.
