I thought Snow Leopard's install option had languages and printer drivers turned off already? Isn't that how they're "saving" you 7GB of disk space?
Nope. They're all still turned on by default. And Rosetta is turned off by default. It's all backwards. So make sure you Customize before you install.

Oh I mis-interpreted the "!". My mistake. Anyway sorry if I annoyed you guys, but I already said I'd stop being sarcastic and that post that someone quoted I was being serious with. I really don't like the Finder.

well it's exactly the same in Snow Leopard. only now it'll be mediocre at twice the speed.

For those looking for Safari ad-blocking in 10.6: http://glimmerblocker.org/

It's a system preference (64-bit at that), not an InputManager or other hacks which can compromise stability or break whenever Safari is updated.

ok, this is pretty cool. it's system wide so it works on all browsers at the same time, which is a nice little bonus.

Sweet. Will look into that. Just called 1-800-MY-APPLE & looks like my Up-to-Date disc is, in fact, prepared for shipping & should be shipped to my house by Friday :D Turn out that their online store systems haven't updated with the new info yet. It's just waiting for UPS to pick it up :D wOot!

I could have sworn that I heard somewhere that they were updating the finder. I think it was Macrumours. Ugh guess I better hope for an improvement for it with 10.7.

They did. They gave it a Cocoa rewrite finally. Updates to the Dock, tweaks with previewing things with QuickLook. Lots of small things but they really do add up :D (friend from college is in the ADC & he let me mess around with his Mac Pro a bit. Had the GM installed on it)

Really is a bang for my buck @ $10. :D

Well there are a handful of tweaks to the Finder in Snow Leopard. Some that I noticed:

- Slider in the bottom right to increase icon size (a la iPhoto)
- You can "Quick Look" media files right on the icon. MP3 and movie files have a play/pause button when you hover over their icons and PDF's have a back/forward button that you can skim through the pages right on the icon.
- You can resize the icons to 512 pixels now (although that's too huge to be useful imo)
- There's a new preference "When performing a search: search this mac, search the current folder, or use the previous search scope"
- For stuff in the Trash bin there is a "Put Back" option that will restore the file to it's folder/location

I got a question... I remember someone saying they might upgrade the new quicktime in features so that they don't have a pro anymore. Did that actually happen or did that turn out to be a bad rumor? I don't remember what functionality it might add so I can't tell whether they did or not.

Glimmerblocker looks pretty rad, but I've always been a fan of using CSS to block ads.

Just download the userContent.css file from http://www.floppymoose.com/ and in the Advanced tab in the Safari preferences set the stylesheet to that file. It has always worked pretty well for me.

You can trim videos, but the export options are ridiculously sad. For that alone I'm keeping 7 installed.

There is no more Pro version, the new Quicktime does a few of the older "pro" features like full-screen out of the box, you can do movie/audio recordings now (which I think was Pro before), and there is a new screen recording feature which is awesome. But it's a completely different app than before. If anything it's more simplified - there is no preferences at all (not in the app or the system preferences section), less export options, etc. For most people it's probably nicer, but if you were a power user of QT you may be disappointed. It's kinda like what happened to iMovie when Apple completely rewrote it a year or two ago.

Here's quick screencaps of the menu options in quicktime X so you can compare with QT7/Pro (most options are gray only because I wasn't playing any media while taking the shots):
- QuickTime Player menu
- File menu
- Edit menu
- View menu
- Share menu
- Window menu

Is Apple taking a long time to update the shipping status on Leopard? Mine still hasn't shipped and it says it will arrive Friday. Yeah right.

the standard version of Snow Leopard is a bootable “full install” disc that doesn’t actually check for the presence of Leopard in order to install. This also means that if, at a later time, you want to wipe your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, you won’t have to first install Leopard and then run a separate Snow Leopard upgrade on top of it. (That sound you hear is a thousand IT managers sighing with relief.)
Yeah, I'm looking at you, Tiger users!

Will it be shipping on all Macs starting 8/28 - the site still lists Leopard as the shipping OS for now. I think it's finally time to replace the G4 Mini - although the Macworld review says "many features won’t truly be exploited until Mac hardware evolves."

I also have a G4 mini that I need to replace. It acts as my media server and backup server, but I want it to also act as my media player, but my G4 mini is unable to play H.264 at any good speed and can't run Snow Leopard.

But damn if $600 wasn't too much. So much. Why not $500? Why $600? Bah. Anyone know where I can get a refurbished Mac mini with a C2D that will run H.264 nicely?

Make a hackintosh.

so if we are on tiger, do we have to at least do a full install? can we not install SL over tiger, keeping all of our settings and things like that? or is the simplest option to back it up on TimeMachine, install SL, then import everything?
Tiger users can do the upgrade process. Time Machine isn't on Tiger..

oh i had no idea it doesnt have TM. my friend has Tiger and i'll be updating it for her. so i can just get her the 29$ one and use that disc to go straight from 10.4-6?

what about the 10$ one, has it been confirmed if thats just an upgrade disc or anything?

Compromise for $550 with student discount?

Apple has the 800$ one for 700$, lol.
I just saw that. If it was the $600 one for $500 I'd get it.

I'll keep looking. Thanks for suggesting Hackintosh, but I'm not going down that road. It's all Mac or nothing. I only need to get it to be a replacement machine while I save up to replace my poor MacBook. (At which point it becomes full time Media/Backup center replacement for my 4 year old G4) I really just want one that can run Snow Leopard and will boot off my MacBook clone until I get the new machine. It'd be as if I never changed computers.

The problem is I don't need the huge HD. I'd rather configure the $600 model to have a 40GB HD and take $100 off the price. But noooo. I must have more HD than I'll even use on it. Damn science and its ever cheaper HD sizes!

I might be able to get my brothers student discount. If they recognize his school. (The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill in Philly)

Are you serious? Although not numerous, there ARE several new front end features for SL, including exchange, new expose, new quicktime, etc. It is a Leopard document, and makes no reference to any of the changes. Being as such, some of the information would be flat out wrong and outdated. It would be extremely sloppy if thats what was included on the retail DVD, and not an updated Snow Leopard Welcome document.
Appleinsider said:
While apparently not yet available online, AppleInsider has also been provided the "Welcome to Snow Leopard" document included in the retail disc. It highlights new features of the operating system update and many basics of Mac OS X.

if you buy online there is no verification necessary. you simply choose any school on their list and you get the discount :lol

edit: beaten...

Try looking for one on Ebay or Craigslist.

Sorry if this seems like an obvious reply but that seems like your best bet.

Wait. Why not try to sell your G4 Mini and see if you can clunk some cash for that to go toward your Mac Mini. I mean sure you probably won't get much for it (especially since it's not in that good of condition) but maybe it will be enough to make the price you pay for the Mac Mini tolerable.

Jasoco said:

Even if they don't you can just type the name of the school manually at the site. I'm sure they'll accept it.

Heh, Apple is so trusting.

If it were Microsoft they'd probably call the school and make sure you really went there.

When I have the small amount of money I need, I will probably do it.

It's a shame the Free iPod touch deal doesn't apply to the mini. It applies to everything but the mini. Though I wouldn't want a last generation touch anyway. I want the next generation touch.

Yes. Not sure about the Up to date disc.

Apparently you can boot from the disc and install 100% fresh, yeah.

Macworld and Mossberg have already confirmed it. Nothing really else to find out except for the up to date disc.

If you choose to customize your installation, you’ll notice that the installation of printer drivers is entirely different in Snow Leopard. In previous versions of OS X, you had the option of installing drivers for the printers of particular vendors. That was always a bit confusing: If I don’t install HP drivers now, does that mean I won’t ever be able to use HP printers? But Snow Leopard doesn’t work that way. Instead, it automatically installs drivers for printers your computer has used in the past. If you’re on a network, it installs drivers for the connected printers it finds out there, too. And it installs drivers for printers Apple considers popular.

The revamped installation process doesn't require an immediate reboot and saves space by changing how printer drivers are installed.
Apple has boasted that Snow Leopard requires less hard-drive space than earlier versions of OS X; believe it or not, this revamped print-driver system is the reason for most of that space savings. Turns out most of us are wasting gigabytes of hard-drive space on printer drivers that we don’t need.

What happens if you encounter a strange, new printer? If you’ve got an Internet connection at that moment, you shouldn’t have much trouble: Snow Leopard will automatically download and install the drivers it needs.

If you really need bullet-proof, instantaneous compatibility with a vast array of printers, you can opt to install all the drivers—you just won’t realize the disk-space savings you might have otherwise. But for most of us, Apple’s new printer installation method should be all but invisible—except for the reclaimed disk space.

Nice options but shouldn't be hidden in the customize section

I think the Customize section should be made into a page that you have to click through, rather than one you have to discover. Especially with the new installer being one page long, veterans will miss the Customize button since it is where the Options button used to be. (The one that used to give you a choice between install methods.)

So does this mean it will go ahead and remove the drivers you have on Leopard that you don't need? I plan on doing a standard upgrade.

Man, using Leopard on this old Mac mini really makes me realize how much I've gotten used to Snow Leopard's awesome new features in the past two months.
