Can anyone confirm that the HFS+ read-only driver in 10.6's Boot Camp made it into the GM? I don't necessarily need write access, and I definitely don't want to pay for MacDrive or Paragon. I remember being really excited about that feature a few months back.
Confirmed

Does anyone happen to know where in Singapore they'll be selling Snow Leopard at launch? It's supposed to be out in this part of the world (Southeast, East Asia) right now, but two Mac stores I went to two days ago said they'd get it in September. I guess I can wait it out until I get back to Japan, but it'd be nice to get Snow Leopard onto my MacBook.

I've never been more conflicted...

Should I get 10.6 or not? I'm running 10.5 without all the flashy stuff like translucency in the menubar and 3D in the dock as is! I'm a former Comptia A+ Cert Tech (need to renew soon actually, once I get more fmiliar with Windows 7 for my own personal sake), but I still feel conflicted. Can the hardware handle a 3rd OS revision? She is slowing down, and warming up, even after new fans and fresh Arctic Silver on the CPU. Adding more RAM is not an option. Maybe it's time to put her out to pasture...
http://i32.tinypic.com/10pwtbl.jpg
On the other hand, the OS is supposed to be slimmer as-is. If I were to get rid of all the flashy stuff and streamline it, I could enjoy the benefits that 10.6 offers right now without having to sacrifice performance. Fans at 6k RPM would be tolerable over time.

Get 10.6, or rough it up and save the money for a successor to the aging beast...

I know what I want, I know I can't have my cake and eat it too. The obvious answer might be to just rough it out, but I know there are also some of you that think that if you can squeeze more life out of something, you should.

If you were in my position, what would you do? Foolish to say, I've kinda grown quite fond of the old lappy, twas my first. It still feels new to me, I treat her right.
My Toshiba laptop with the exact same specs ran friggin VISTA just fine so you're doing something very wrong. How much HDD space do you have left?

Well my machine runs fast, and I mean FAST (When streamlined how I like it and moderate on the fans). I just don't think I could get used to it being slower with compromises, so that is why I was hesitant at first. I'm pretty picky when it comes to performance, I liker everything very low-resource.

To answer your question, 90 GB.

If it goes so fast I see no point in your post. Just get Snow Leopard which is supposed to be faster. If you are so obssessed with speed, get an SSD =P

Edit: hey cool
We wanted to let you know that your order has shipped.

Yup just got the email that mine has shipped with Purolator here in Toronto. I think this is the first time I've pre-ordered something online and got it on release day. (I'm looking at you amazon.ca)

Might sneak out to the Apple Store tomorrow and get this. Should be easy enough to walk in and grab one right? Not like a hardware launch. I seem to remember it was easy enough with Leopard...

I still have no idea what you're talking about. It wouldn't be immoral to install snow leopard clean install or upgrade with the $30 disk. I also don't understand what you're harping on about with speed loss when snow leopard is faster in all tests I've seen and has been promoted as such.

Edit: Mine doesn't even say processing it still says has not shipped. :(

I am going to try my University computer store. If they get some I think I will have a good chance. Otherwise I will try dropping by the Mac store. Only thing that worries me is that at 29.99 a pop, there will be a shitload of people getting their copy tomorrow.

As I said before, cnet kinda scared me, especially with me running older hardware. 30/170 USD is cash in your pocket, so getting a second opinion proved valuable. Hell, GAF already saved me 150 USD! Also, no one aid anything about immorality. :lol Just making sure that the licenses covered my intentions, I don't want to be responsible for "foul play" of any sort.

As for ordering it online as many of you have, why not just go to the Apple Store and save some time? Just asking why the preference...

I love the way they worded that. "Read-only to protect OS X from PC viruses". Because it's true. If I had to use Windows, I'd want it as quarantined as possible so all I have to do is hit the magic "Reformat" button to nuke it from space and start over.

Just buy the damn upgrade. You own 10.5, so it is perfectly legal. They made it not require a 10.5 installation to make it easier for you. The upgrade was made FOR YOU.

But fuck, if you want to give Apple more money, I'm sure Steve Jobs will gladly accept your money.

Apple Licenses DO NOT EQUAL Microsoft Licenses. Apple does not keep a record of OS X purchasers. Apple does not make you enter a long code if you want to install OS X. Apple does not make sure you don't change your hardware and require you to reactivate the OS if you do. Apple is not Microsoft.

Woo, what a time for my MacBook to die. Can I expect them to hand me a free copy of Snow Leopard at the Apple Store when I go in to pick up a new mbp tomorrow?

In a separate box? Yes!
They did it for OS X 10.5!

Immoral was the wrong word but you know what I mean with implying wrongdoing when there is none with what you want to do. I ordered online since I got my macbook when they had the last update so I can get it for $10 instead of $30.

If I buy a macbook pro from the Apple store on monday or tuesday will it come preloaded with SL?

I would think so or if it doesn't they'll give you both disks for free. I know a friend who got a 17" during the tiger/leopard transition said he got both so I'm assuming they'll do that again. They're usually pretty on top of upgrades whether it be hardware or otherwise.

They don't come pro-loaded, you have to use the install disk that comes with the laptop. I'm not sure though if it will come, it just depends on when the macbook was packaged?

They'll just hand you a Snow Leopard box.

This thread has the most waffling and unnecessary concern I have ever seen on GAF. Just about everything being asked is either on Apple's website or can be figured out by just calling Apple for confirmation. They don't bite.

woah sorry first time owning a Mac... So let me get this straight... No software at all comes preloaded onto the computer?
It's been a couple of years, but when I got mine, it came with minimal bloatware, including marble blast and comic life. When I got the Mac out of the box, first thing I did was do a clean install with what I wanted! No printer drivers, no bloatware, no nothing.

Oh, and the addition of X11 of course!

HowellJenkins said:
oh ok thanks. sorry for my ignorance.
It's understandable since it'll be your first Mac. In my earlier post I was talking shit about all of the wild talk about upgrading/how to upgrade/which version to buy/what's legal/etc.

You'll likely get a computer with Leopard and iLife on it like normal, and they'll just take a regular Snow Leopard box off the shelf and give it to you for free to upgrade. They'll probably offer to upgrade it in the store right in front of you.

Wait, so they are selling it at midnight, or you are camping out for Snow Leopard....?

Camping out for a new OS (and not even a totally new one, just a revamp) is INSANE. And I have camped out for some stupid shit in my time.

Apple just tells that you're a horrible human being if you install their software on anything but hardware by them.

It's an hour, I wasn't doing much anywho, and I'm an insomniac who does't go to bed until 5-6 anywho.

Anywho, they're setting up. I see a bunch of barricades but nothing set up, really. Some people hanging out but the "line" is just a few dozen people deep.

This is the first OS that won't work on PowerPC Macs. I think the demand will be much less than previous releases.

check out the install base numbers for the number of Mac users who are on Intel machines. it's really, really high.

sales will be brisk, especially considering the 30 dollar price.

edit: latest numbers I could find from Net Applications in Dec 2008. Intel share is undoubtedly even higher now. probably past 8% of total marketshare and over 80% of Mac marketshare)

Apple Macintosh: 9.63%
- Intel: 7.19%
- PowerPC: 2.44%

I have a feeling that their Intel userbase is of more consequence, and at this point, larger than their PPC users.

This is Apple's OS X licensing model. You give them as much money as you're willing to. After you realize that the disc in the family pack is identical to the normal disc, it's up to you as to whether you're the good samaritan who will keep paying my AAPL stock dividends for me by continuing to buy the more expensive option.

At the end of the day, Apple wants to squeeze as much blood from the stone as possible but without hindering the adoption rate of each OS release. The faster people upgrade the OS the better it is for them, for a variety of reasons.

Microsoft requires you to enter a long serial number when you install Windows. Which is then checked against a database to make sure it's legit. If it isn't, you are a pirate. If it is, you are good. Apple doesn't deal with silly long serial numbers because they know only Mac users will have the OS. And it comes with all their computers. And even now with Hackintosh's they haven't resorted to the draconian method of making sure the OS is legitimately purchased and not being installed on a hundred computers.

I don't know if they still do it, but there was also a time when you couldn't change too much hardware without the OS screaming at you for being a dirty pirate and trying to transfer your OS to another computer.

Apple uses the honor system. You can install one OS X disc on a hundred computers if you were so inclined, but the small number of people who are that evil is outweighed by the amount of legit users who will buy a Family license for their 5 Macs.

Microsoft on the other hand will make sure you buy a hundred copies of Windows (Or their new family pack, how many PC's can a family pack of 7 be installed on) to install on your hundred PC's. Even though every PC comes with a copy of Windows, they still want a brand new license when you upgrade every time. Making you type in a hell of a lot of seemingly random strings of letters and numbers.

I used to use Windows in the 90's, and the part I hated every single time was entering those goddamned serial codes.

While Microsoft would rather punish everyone for the small amount of pirates, Apple knows the amount of good people outweighs the amount of bad ones.

Just one of those conveniences that reminds me why I love this company. :D

Fucking shit. My Up-to-Date disc is still showing as "Not yet shipped". Still have not received a tracking number even though I was assured by 1-800-MY-APPLE that I'd get one earlier this evening. They also "assured me" that it was showing up for them as "Prepared for shipping". Fuck >_< And I ordered this on 8/19 >_< Ah, at least my 4GB RAM upgrade from Other World Computing shipped today. & I ordered that today.

Let's see what will reach my house first :lol Anyone wanna place some bets? :lol

It's not just the honour system.

You know that computer you're putting the OS on? Yup, you paid Apple money for that computer. You know those intangibles that every Mac user touts is an advantage over PCs, and worth whatever premium you think exists? This is part of that. It's in Apple's best interest to make software installation and upgrade as smooth as possible, because it's their mode of operation. You've already bought their hardware - it's nearly like they could give away their software, just to keep you coming back for the hardware (and they do).

Their environment and tight integration is the key. They get you wrapped up in iTunes, and OSX so you keep buying their iPods, iPhones and computers. They work so well together and the user experience is so good, you keep doing it.

Not to sound like a your typical nerd being impatient with sweetest new thing in computer tech, but I faxed in my Snow Leopard order more than 2 days ago and when I go to check it's status the site says that there is no order. :(

I know that people like Liu Kang are telling other people in a similar situation not to worry but mine is saying that there is no order at all.
