i would definitely do a clean install if i felt i had been installing a load of crap that had probably left stuff behind (browser plugins, kexts, prefpanes, input managers etc) and some apps will leave stuff behind if you just drag and drop them to the trash.. it can help get rid of stuff you might of forgotten. i even had some ppc stuff running in rosetta as launch at startup background processes that i didnt realise was left over in my old install!!

if you have been careful about what you installed though there really is no point. although like i said if you put your data on a different partition it doesnt even matter

is the dmg in the older 10a432 gm release identical to what is on the retail disc?

i have a legit copy but i'm home ill so i'm not getting it till next week. might as well install it if i can.

There is only one scene release of snow leopard and it was released two weeks ago.

It's not a moot point--these things pile up over years. I did a clean Leopard install on a machine that had simply been upgrading since Jaguar, because of all the crap that slowly accumulated and was no longer relevant.

Google "my macbook suddenly got slow". It's terrifically difficult to diagnose why a Mac just got slow (just like it is on Windows). It's usually easier just to do a clean install every few years than to find everything.

You can go the Onyx route, run every utility on the planet, and still miss any-and-every hidden kext, rogue launchd addition, input manager, or PATH screw-up that is hitting the a different binary release than system services are expecting.

I can see that, I guess I'm used to myself with cleaning out stuff I don't need or use every once in a while. Huelen doesn't seem like that though so he shouldn't have to clean install at all.

Sonofabitch. So get this. My sister got a new laptop for college at the end of July. A bunch of her friends also got new laptops the same day (same models, the 15-inch MBP). They came back to my family's house & asked me for help as to what to do on this page

http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

So, my sister & her friends ordered the Up-to-Date at the exact same time. They all live in the same town. My sister's order is still showing as "Not Yet shipped" (not even "prepared for shipping"). Her friend's orders are all showing up as "Shipping" & they have their tracking numbers. We don't. 1-800-MY-APPLE has no other "information" except that they all are "shipping by the 28th".

FUCK >_<

Why do you care so much about your sister's disc?

Same thing for me, did a fax, nothing. I called them and their automated system says to wait at least 48 hours till something shows up on the site so i didn't bother with a rep.

Exactly what they told me. They said wait until today...and the site still says there's no order. Hell last time I do a fax order. Damn site for not working on me.

I'm getting worried because she is leaving to move onto campus later this afternoon. She wanted me to update her computer to Snow Leopard before she left for college (I'm kinda the computer techie of the family). Last time she upgraded her computer herself (her old laptop to Leopard) she kinda nuked the HD :lol (long story). Her college is about 4 hours away.

How do you do a clean install by the way? I already installed Snow Leopard, but since my Macbook is 1.5 years old now, maybe a clean install is the way to go. Do I just put in the Snow Leopard dvd (yep, I do have my backups) and go from there? I assume the installer will ask to erase the old partition:)?

Quick question. If you archive and install, it just pulls your system files into a separate folder on your hdd right. It's like doing a clean install, but your old stuff is still saved. The archive and install does not move anything back into the OS.

Also my stupid school store doesn't have any copies. Looks like I am going to hit an apple store on the way to my doctor's appointment.

Same boat here.

Maybe the distribution center is right next door and I don't know it. I was hoping to have it up and running this weekend. Looks like that's not going to happen.

I know, I still don't understand why people are so gung-ho on clean installing. :(
Because in some cases it just makes the most sense!

BTW, got my copy. Just need to find an optical drive...

Does anyone know if Freedom (the wonderful little mac program that disables your Internet access for a user-specified period of time) is compatible with Snow Leopard?

I imagine many here are not all that interested in such a program, but it's a pretty critical one for me when I actually NEED TO GET WORK DONE.

Thanks!

Erase and Install and Archive and Install are no longer present in the Snow Leopard installer. You can still perform Erase and Install by using Disk Utility, but Archive and Install is gone.

Why don't you just turn off your Network interface card?

Not really. Most cases so far are in fear of their install being borked when they have no problems and are just paranoid about upgrading from problems a long time ago.

I'm guessing once it's disabled the app doesn't let you re-enable it before the time elapses, as opposed to just disabling your NIC.

So it looks like I'll be coming home tonight to a copy of SL. Very excited. :D

(my copy shipped this morning, and is already on the delivery truck on the way towards my apartment)

...well because I can always turn it back on. Freedom can only be undone with a reboot which is a big enough pain in the ass to keep the user from stopping what they're doing and spend all that time in order to mess around on the Internet.

Yeah it's probably more psychological than anything but it's an awesome little program...

Anyone try it with SL?

It's a valid question if your HDD breaks or something, though. I heard you don't have to install Leopard first, and that you can install this directly on a fresh disk - is that true?

Here's the official list from Apple of incompatible programs

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258

Freedom is not on that list.

Thanks for the link!

My only concern is that Freedom's kind of an obscure program and may not even warrant Apple's inclusion on an incompatibility list.

Plus it champions keeping people off the Internet which is obviously a large marketplace for Apple and therefore it may not be in their best interest to speak Freedom's name....

I'd say keep an eye on http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ . I don't see that app listed on that site yet though

All the UK preorders went out on Wednesday, but judging by the UK thread on the MacRumors forums none of them have arrived today. Good job, Apple or Royal Mail.

Hopefully they've been sent through the normal post, because if not we won't get Saturday delivery and Monday is a holiday, which makes it Tuesday at the earliest...

Does anyone know how to stop itunes from starting when you press the play key? I had to uninstall itunes to get rid of it.

I don't get this. Couldn't you try, you know, just NOT pressing the key? Why is the function so bad that you have to uninstall the program? Do you hit that much by accident?

I found my optical drive, but I seem to have misplaced my USB male extender. You see, I bought a MacBook Air Superdrive and modded it so that it would work on anything with 2 USB ports, but the problem now is that the cable has the 2 plugs close together, whereas my MacBook pro has 2 ports, but on opposite ends. I'm still looking, but it is entirely possible that I will not be able to install OS X 10.6 today.

Is it worth it for me to upgrade to SL before I upgrade my RAM, or should I upgrade after I up my RAM?
When it comes to that, it really doesn't matter.

Anyone upgrade from Tiger yet? Any problems or issues using the $29 upgrade disc?
Well, I'm gonna do a full clean install, so I will keep you up-to-date. If I can find my extender that is...

Because the benefits of RAM will be noticeable as soon as you add more! More RAM is always better, so I would just say install whenever and get the RAM whenever you feel you need some more. Nothing ill will come from installing 10.6 without upgrading your RAM, though more RAM is always better.

Okay, thanks. I'm gonna run to the mall right now and pick up the disc now. Is Apple giving out T-Shirts again? Did anyone find out?

Also I just want to make sure again, this RAM with work fine with my iMac, correct?

Reporting back from my 10.5 -> 10.6 upgrade.

Upgrade itself was about 50 minutes on my Feb '08 MBP. Nothing really fancy when upgrade was done aside from the replying of the welcome video.

I'm extremely happy to reconfirm that Safari is no longer choking on animated gifs. I've gone hunting for various threads with large animated gifs and Safari has handled them all. Not the smoothest execution, but my god do they not crash or stall the browser. Fantastic.

Dock Expose is pretty cool, but I don't I'll be using it too much.

Really dig QT7 interface (or lack thereof).

Good stuff, gents.

If it doesn't work, you can also try SelfControl: http://visitsteve.com/work/selfcontrol/

which is site specific. it also lets you set the amount of time you want to block the site, and restarts don't disable the block.

I was at launch, and there were no shirts, but we did get free pretzels!

As for the best way of finding out compatible RAM, go to crucial.com!

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

MultiClutch isn't working :( Is there an equivalent program that anyone is aware of that allows you to define gesture commands on a per app basis?

Hmm...actually, is this related to Safari no longer supporting input managers?

Mudda fugga...

Edit: Yikes...this may make me not use Safari anymore, as multi-touch gesture navigation is way too important to me. They somewhat fix animated gifs but break my multi-clutch :(

Be careful when buying ram, when I bought 4gigs of generic DDR3 it showed up as 2gigs even though i had installed 4gigs. I went out and swapped it out with mac approved ram and it worked. Your MMV with generic ram.
