Ok question.

Thoughts on base 10 vs. binary?

I figure this is just a metric issue, and thus I side with metric. Simpler, make sense. 200GB = 200,000,000,000 bytes. 0.1% of that is 200,000,000. You know, 200 MB.

Under binary measure (base 2?) 200 GB is 214,748,364,800 bytes. 0.1% is 214,748,364.8 bytes, which is, you know, 204.8 MB.

What.

Anyway, is there a practical use for a binary counting system when computing/programming?

Is it a good thing to switch to metric (standard), or is this just trying to shut up ill-informed customers who claim that their 320GB HDD isn't really 320GB?

I prefer the new way.

I like that 2534 MB now equals 2.534 GB. base 2 counting for hard drive storage was confusing, even for techie types occasionally.

it's actually a little different situation. all input managers are disabled by Apple for 64 bit apps. so it's not a matter of multi clutch needing a 64 bit version input manager to work (if that was even possible).

input managers are dead as far as Apple is concerned.

Why did they do that? If they're going to be dicks about it, they could at least make an official multi clutch

InsomniaX doesn't work in SL.

Did my install and I got 15 gb back. That's awesome. Quicktime 10 looks amazing, when the menu bar and controls fade away, it's so nice looking.

input managers are a real vulnerability in OS X. it is possible to have a malicious program use an input manager to fuck up your system. if mac users value future security, disabling input managers is an important step.

I miss multiclutch too but considering how input managers are a gaping security hole (and were already being deprecated by Apple in 10.5) I understand Apple's reasoning as to why they're no longer supported in any fashion.

TBH I'd rather have the option to take the security risk and use multi clutch, which I really can't live without. Apple really needs to come up with an official solution to this. How hard can it be to map swipes to kb shortcuts?

I know this may sound bad, but this is a reason I like to adapt to an user interface, rather than adapt it to me. I'm afraid that I will get into a habit that makes it nearly impossible to operate another computer. Damn you multi-touch! You are too convenient!

That said, I didn't like the 3-finger swipe to move back/forward in Safari at first (I wanted it to switch tabs), but one you discover it kind of does that throughout other areas of Mac OS X, it makes sense. For example, iTunes store -swipe left/right with 3-fingers is also back forward. In iPhoto, previous/next. Makes sense. I guess.

I don't think it's hard to do. Rather, I think it's dealing with an implementation that is more uniform over the entire OS. That's Apple's mode of operation - try and figure out what is best, and force every user to adopt it, with little option in customisability. Occasionally, they let options slip through, much to the joy of the userbase.

I agree with you about the consistency of the left/right swiping in apps. I can swipe left to go back in itunes store, safari, finder, iphoto, etc.

with my old multiclutch setup, I had left/right as tab switching and down as "back" in safari.

I'm getting used to the left/right swiping for navigation now that i'm seeing just how pervasive it is system-wide.

actually, the main reason for me to keep using safari despite the loss of multiclutch support instead of moving to firefox is the automated text correction feature. firefox doesn't support native, automatic text correction in SL and I will be using that a lot. otherwise it's a string of right clicks to change "ahve" to "have", "teh" to "the" and so on.

better typists than myself don't need that feature, of course.

Just want to say that I was 100% correct that you can install the Snow Leopard "upgrade" disc on anything and there are no disc checks.

This is great. I guess the numbers of tiger users in an intel machine really aren't that high to worry about.

Yup. The spell check feature already gets a lot if use from me, so I look forward to automatic correction regarding teh.

so. is there a point in adding quicktime7 from the customize menu? why would i want it there in addition to quicktimeX ?

Be careful when buying ram, when I bought 4gigs of generic DDR3 it showed up as 2gigs even though i had installed 4gigs. I went out and swapped it out with mac approved ram and it worked. Your MMV with generic ram.
Where can I find good, Mac approved RAM?

I think QuickTime 7 has a lot more output settings ang general usability. QuickTime x is pretty much a barebines player with minor editing. I'm not sure, though, and would like elaboration myself. Just postin to subscribe :D

Any of the crucial ram as long as you get the right kind for your motherboard is mac approved I think. They had it for $60 at newegg with free shipping about a week or so ago and I forgot to order it. Still pisses me off. :/

Quicktime 7 Pro has more options than Quicktime X.

This is Apple.

I'm hearing speak that the Quicktime X player is this year's iMovie 08.

You mean totally awesome, but overwhelmed by a bunch of whiny users who don't understand how to deal with the fact that their favorite application wasn't going to come back?

I find it odd that the copy I got doesn't identify itself as an upgrade disc. Does everyone literally get the same thing regardless of what they are paying for?

Anyone who used a FAX to order it get their copy yet? or even a confirmation of the existence that they got the fax?

That's what I was told by 1-800-MY-APPLE. The UTD discs are exactly the same as the normal $30 discs

Do you still get the added hard drive space if you DON'T do a clean install, and instead just install over leopard?

My MBP HD is full (3GB left) and the main reason I'm considering snow leopard is for the additional HD space, as sad as that is. But I can't do a clean install...

Probably. Think it comes down to trust with Apple in regards to this stuff.

I'm sure I could have upgraded all the Macs in my house with a single user copy without a hitch (I think), but I prefer to go legit whenever possible.

Told you. This is Apple. Not Microsoft.

I love this company.

They learned from their mistake with 10.1's upgrade disc which required you to have 10.0 installed, even if you wanted to fresh install you needed to reinstall 10.0 first. The first time I installed 10.1 onto an existing 10.0 it broke the OS. I had to reinstall 10.0 then immediately reinstall 10.1 to get it to work again. Apple realized their mistake and will never do an upgrade again. And I love them for it.

That shit is unacceptable. Still not even prepared for shipping on the very day it's supposed to be on my fucking doorstep. And of course, they won't allow cancelling orders at this point.

It's sort of a bummer that all that "hidden" functionality of Quicktime (Pro) is gone, though. It has always been my first choice for transcoding, extracting, splicing, trimming, dubbing, et cetera my media files. QTX is a bit too bare bones even by Apple standards. Hopefully they'll put a couple of the good old menu options back at some point.

You don't loose Q7. When I tried to open a MKV Q7 started instead of the new Quicktime. I deleted the old Quicktime anyway. I don#t really need it.
