Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Is the cutscene with the GTA joke in the game? I didnt see it during my play though, and i was just wondering if i had to do something special to see it.

was this when
you first get to the docks? shortly after fighting the pain and seeing those hoverchair things for the first time? after a cutscene where ocelot plays russian roullette with sokolov and sokolov pees his pants? because i just got there and i don't have any sniper rifle yet. i hope i didn't miss anything like that...but i got the ak47 and shotgun afterwards, and i don't think they'd give me a sniper rifle before an assault rifle.

yeah, that's it. you can get the sniper rifle right before that scene, by taking a left rather than going straight after the part with the hover-platform guys. there's also a shotgun in the caves, and an assault rifle at the wrecked building where you meet eva. :/ maybe you should do a better job of exploring. :lol

MGS3's art direction just has no equal right now. I mean literally, everything just clicked so well that nothing stood out as particularly a standout.
What comes to mind for me are the walls in the caves. They looked unusual.

Okay maybe this part is just me being tired that night but, this is something else semi freaky about the Sorrow :
a guard snuck up on me by accident, so I freaked out and emptied a full clip from the M16 into his crotch.

The odd thing is later on during the Sorrow river walk, I swear the very same guy I shot in the crotch walking down the river, right about at the same point too from counting the bosses. He was the only guy through the whole game that I shot in that manner.

omg something else they improved over the demo :

I capped a guard in the legs, woke him up, and he actually healed himself first before getting up and walking away

Spoiler :

After beating it, I REALLY want to play around with
the Boss's moveset in the regular game. Holy shit she does a lot of cool stuff if you fight her hand to hand.

Though I see why they didn't give you her moveset though, she's the boss after all.

And really, I can sort of see how it can be worked into the CQC mechanic as well, with most of the actions being context sensitive and all. But I would LOVE to own some guards head on with some of the moves she did.

God I wish it was an unlockable though, that beating the boss gave me with that moveset was just so humbling.

The ending was genuinely touching, I haven't seen such an emotional ending in anything in such a long time.

Yah I really want them to make a game based around her. Even though she said that Big Boss and her created CQC together she seems to hav e amuch better understanding of the system than he does. She's also lighting quick while BB is a much slower paced guy. A game with her adventures with the Cobra unit would be very cool. She's just such a great character that it'd suck for her to only appear in 1 game.

About Ocelot for those that beat it:

What's up with this guy? Out of all the characters in the series, he's the one where it still doesn't seem to be clear as to what he's after. It doesn't even seem clear if they want you to hate the guy or not. He's not like other characters that have hurt characters Big Boss/Raiden/Solid Snake have relationships with.

One of my favorite moments...
In the sewers where you're running away there are dogs chasing after you and it did not occur to me at least for the first ten minutes that I could use my fork to stab them to death, so I kept running away. I was running away from one and crawled through a hole to escape and the bastard crawled into the hole too and continued after me! LOL

Not sure about this, but are all the men that walk towards you representative of the exact number of people you've killed in the game? The game does keep a count, so it's possible. A lot of the ghosts I saw had their necks cut - my most used CQC move.

About the length of the ending...

I just recorded it to see how long it was in comparison to alot of recent endings. From the time you put the final shots into Boss till you get the text scroll of what happened to the characters its 31 minutes long. If you include everything up until the point that you get your ranking its 42 minutes long. Definetly a good change from the recent batch of game endings that really don't give you much of a closure of what happened.

Today is a good day. Classes are finally over for Thanksgiving break and I can finally get into 3 great games that I haven't had the time to really play yet. Does it get any better than Halo 2, San Andreas and MGS3 all in one week?

I am going to pick up my copy of MGS3 today and start playing tonight.....I remember having conversations w/ Solid Snake just about the possibility of an MGS3 almost 2 years ago. SS, I still remember you insisting that Kojima would take it back to the jungle.

Good lookin out mang =P

I'm 8 hours in now..

I'm so in love with everything in this game but I'm playing on the "Normal" difficulty setting and the game seems fairly easy. When the guards see you, you can just kill them 'till there's no more left or simply just run away.

I am afraid of something. The story is very good, more than the 2 previous ones and I wonder it Kojima screws it up at the end, just like in MGS2.

I am entering the fortress right now and I love the story so far. Will I be deceived?

btw, for those who are fighting The End in normal mode, don't waste your time hidden in the bushes. Run a lot and use your D.Mic. At one point, he's gonna bleed and you'll be able to follow his footsteps and finish him off. Anyone tried doing a "Freeze" on him?

Really love the music in this game.. espically the new theme. Finally managed to get the MP3 of it from the 4 track Soundtrack. Don't think I can post the link here so PM me for the link :)

Hmm...just finished it. I'd say around 21-22 hours.

The ending was excellent and the casting call posted a couple pages back answered the rest of the questions I had regarding the plot. Its truly an excellent game, but there was just one thing I think bothered me about it, and that's that most of the characters were simply there. MGS1 and 2 (at LEAST 2) seemed to take more time to develop each character as an integral part of the plot, friends, enemies, and everyone in-between. Everyone was sort of in on it. A lot of the characters in MGS3 serve more as support than actual plot devices. While we do learn little quirks about them here and there, there isn't much of a reason for Para-Medic to be there other than as a medical advisor, or Zero than a mission commander. And all of the Cobras, except maybe Sorrow, seemed to be there to function merely in boss battles. This is opposed to, say, the plot-integral elements of characters like Fortune and Fatman. We learned where they came from, why they felt the way they did, what they were doing on Big Shell, etc. Granted, reading the casting call defines these characters a little better, but I think there should've been a little more in-game focus on them other than "hey, they're part of Boss' group and have crazy powers, accept it!"

But its really more of a peeve than anything. I feel the wait for MGS4 is going to be a very long one. I admit, I kinda missed the presence of those like Otacon and I want to see how much farther down the rabbit hole this whol Patriots thing goes.

Are multiple environments still in? I seem to recall Kojima saying there would be snowy mountains and other environments.

I don't recall a snowy mountain, but there was a mountain. There are varied environments, but its all part of the same wilderness ultimately, so they may not seem *drastically* different. There are foresty areas, swampy areas, mountain areas, caves areas, river areas, several bases and warehouses to work through, etc.

Regarding bosses :

This is one instance where I think Kojima actually listened to feedback - in MGS2 I actually recall tons of bitching about bosses being too talkative.

Also I think the boss fights all fit the James Bond "Jaws" villainy theory to a T - they simply exist as foils with memorable gimmicks (i.e. metal teeth) and not much else more.

KOjima basically said "ok bitches STFU here is the best MGS game ever!" All my complaints from mgs2 have so far been addressed:

Better Environments!!
More and cooler bosses!
Longer game!
Better Story!
No raiden!! even better
You get to kill him and watch him walk around like a fool in the afterlife. Not only that he confirms what we all new about raiden...that he was a fairy lol. I just finished fighting the SOrrow..omg..cant wait to see how the story unfolds.

i just to
the research facility where you're supposed to find sokolov a second time, while disguised as a scientist...i read that there is a submachine gun available on the first floor, but i can't find it :( ...and not the m16 i already got that.

Its in the frequency-locked storage room on the 1st level.

yup,
every man you kill shows up in the river, and usually depicting how you killed him.

also, did anybody get to hear
the sorrow's prophetic remark about big boss' demise? :) one of the coolest things in the game, I thought.

I think that was actually Raiden's grandad. I thought it was his dad when he was first revealed but since you have to kill him it doesn't really pan out considering Raiden is in his 20's in MGS2.

The yelp he makes when you kill him is pretty damn funny though. :P

You can kill him? WTF? When I killed him I got a
"RAIDENKOV is DEAD"
screen and I had to restart. Anyway it's funny how he
runs into the bathroom to hide if you punch him. I ran to go get him and the bastard did his side flip and a roundhouse kick on me. :lol I knocked him out and dragged his ass upstairs to the locker. I loved Raiden so I'm glad Kojima had him in the game; it's really funny stuff, the gay thing and all.
:lol

I waited until he went into the bathroom and then walked in and shot him in the back of the head. Then I pulled him upstairs and put him in the locker. No Raidenovich is dead sign though.

It was a nice touch that in his locker there's a MGS2 poster of Raiden. :)

Just finished boss fight with the End. Arguably one of the best boss battles I've ever played. The amount of graphical detail and programming that went into that battle is just remarkable. Having to find him by the glare of the sun off of his scope and the directional mic to listen for his breathing? Awesome.

Wow. And to think I just used the thermal goggles and the sniper rifle. :lol

All these stories just make me want to play through it again trying different ways to win these fights.

— Why did you defect?
— I haven't. I am loyal to “The End”, to my purpose...

That speech was in the trailer, but isn't in the game integrally (or at least, is a little different). Hasn't anyone noticed?

Maybe the role of The End was suposed to be more important than it turned out to be?

After completeing MGS2, I couldn't say it was a better game than the original. But Snake Eater was stellar in every possible way and easily takes the series' prize.

I'd hate to be disrespectful by giving focus to those last three and a half hours, since the game was very much a complete experience, but my God... it was the most intense salvo of varried gameplay set-pieces I've seen in a game. Just incredible.

KCEJ-West's gift for presentation is unrivaled. No game looks this good, this polished, this sophisticated. It was obviously a labor of love by all involved, and I seriously doubt we'll see them topped until they do it themselves.

May have leapfrogged San Andreas as my GOTY.

It was there just slightly altered. They removed the quotations around "the end" and it wasn't capitalized.

I have to agree. I wasn't really anticipating mgs3 (for some reason...i considered myself one of the biggest fan of the series since the msx2 days, i loved mgs, then forgot about snake. Played through mgs2 rather superficially) but God i've never seen anything this well 'done'. I started playing it the same day as half life 2, and i have to say i was much more impressed with mgs3.
I still struggle with the camera and the game mechanics, and i can't get used to the control system (i will eventually) but i've never seen anything so well crafted. Ever.
Visually, the whole package destroys any other 'goty' contender this year imo.
It's impressive how far the guys at konami went to achieve certain effects, recreate certain sequences...other developers would just have said " this can't be done on the current gen, we have to give up and rewrite this sequence "
It's obvious Kojima didn't limit his imagination to "what could be done on a ps2", and his crew just went ahead and did it; no matter how long it would take or how many tricks they had to pull.
MGS3 couldn't care less about technical limitations, it simply acts like they never existed and walks beyond.
A work of art.

My thoughts exactly. That nuclear explosion scene for example, was just *begging* to be pre-rendered, but they just went ahead and did it in-engine like the rest of the cutscene.

Nice, I'm exploring more on my 2nd run through and found things I missed the first time, like the torch. Also it's cool how when I got to the small base with the soviet chopper I captured an enemy, interrogated him and he told me the positions of all the other guards in that area and all the items.

There's probably no real relation. Considering Raikov's sexual orientation and probable age, I don't think he had any kids. Just there for joke purposes most likely.

Oh, I just remembered. Was there ever a time you could use Raikov's "water" tip on Volgin? I looked around during the fight with him, but I didn't see any. I guess I'll just throw a fish on him next time. :lol

I read this on the ign forum, and havent tried it yet. You might want to not look at this and figure it out for yourself because its ingenious, and just plain hilarious.

well i read that during the first volgin fight if you equip the Raikonov camo and mask, Volgin will get all teary eyed, and will be ineffective for a while. Once the affects wear off though he suppossedly goes ape shit on your ass
:D

Only read if you've beat it:

Her reference to the end wasn't to the actual character but what her goal in her mission was. She was a spy basically, it was just everything got screwed up when Volgin shot that nuke. She really never turn against her country, her country turned against her.

Kojima mentioned in an interview that there's a feature in MGS3 where you could capture an a creature and then release then back into a place that they're better suited in. Has anyone figured out how to do this?

It's this:

Eva done up in the Marlon Brando Wild One outfit on top of the fucking Triumph is the hottest thing in the history of fucking videogames.

Most of the rest of the game that isn't The Sorrow is kinda sucky.

DFS.
