Niners and Harbaugh are tanking this year to get Luck. There is no other explanation for the resigning of Alex Smith. They'll probably let Frank Gore holdout as long as he's willing to not play, just to really make sure they have no offense.

Gore already ended his holdout. If we can just get carlos rogers we will be fine

Saw this on BBI regarding Osi:

1. April 2003, Osi Umenyiora was chosen by the Giants in the second round of the 2003 draft, the 56th player taken, and signed a four-year, $2.53 million contract with a $1.165 million signing bonus. (*)
2. December 23, 2005, Christmas came early for New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. Friday night, ESPN.com learned Umenyiora had followed up the first Pro Bowl selection of his career earlier this week by agreeing to a landmark six-year contract extension. The extension, which runs through the 2012 season, totals just under $41 million and includes $15 million in guarantees. The three-year veteran, who is second in the league in sacks with 12½, will make about $21 million in the first three years of the contract. The guaranteed part of the contract is believed to be the largest ever awarded to a three-year veteran."The Giants have always demonstrated a proactive stance with their talented, young players and this is the latest example of their approach," said Mackler, who was the point man in negotiations, but declined to discuss specifics of the contract. "This moves Osi into a category with the most elite ends in the game, and that's saying something for a player who hasn't even completed his third season yet." (*)

Osi's performance after the contract (bold years are the years in which he performs like he initially was paid):

06' - 24 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 FF
07' - 40 tackles, 13 sacks, 5 FF
08' - DNP due to pre-season knee injury
09 - 19 tackles, 7 sacks, 4 FF - Benched for Mathias Kiwanuka
10' -33 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 10 FF

Got paid top DE money for that?

Pouncey already looks scary-good in his second season. In my seven years covering the NFL, I've never seen a center who moves as well and fluidly as Pouncey. Last week, longtime NFL writer Damon Hack of Sports Illustrated and I were sitting next to each other watching Pittsburgh's conditioning evaluation. We were amazed with how easily Pouncey, who is listed at 304 pounds, was running 100-yard sprints, while the rest of the linemen were lagging far behind. Pound for pound, Pouncey is easily one of the top athletes on the Steelers.
Man, can't we just draft Pouncey 4 more times?

Are you telling me you believe Alex Smith can win for you? I live in the Bay Area and all my friends are Niners fans; none of them believe in Alex Smith.

So do you believe the Niners can win despite Alex Smith, or do you believe that Alex Smith can help the Niners win?

You know what I like about the off-season:
All the reporting is incredibly positive. Whether it's Haynesworth, the young LBs, the secondary, Ochocinco, etc., they can do no wrong in the off-season. And only when the season starts you get to see all the problems. Until then there's plenty time to get my hopes up!

10 ffs in a single season is pretty beast though
I fully agree, it is pretty beast, problem is his stats and film study show how inconsistent a pass rusher he is. Take away that one Winston Justice game and he has 31.5 sacks in 5 years. Is that worth $10MM a year? Absolutely not.

In my opinion, he saw last year as a contract year and went nuts. He actually kept lane assignments and containment when required and played against the run - never seen that shit from him. All he does is rush all the way upfield and out of plays. He's a piece of shit, been saying this for years.

For comparison, his teammate across the line (Tuck) was extended in 2008:

The Giants and defensive end Justin Tuck have agreed to terms on a five-year, $30-million contract extension through the 2013 season that includes $16 million in guaranteed money, according to two people with knowledge of the contract details. The people requested anonymity because the deal isn't expected to be finalized and signed until tomorrow -- two days before the Giants face the Packers in the NFC Championship Game.

His stats:

2007: 48 Tackles, 10 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 passes defensed (he only started two games that year)
2008: 52 Tackles, 12 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 passes defensed (first year as a starter)
2009: 44 Tackles, 6 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 8 passes defensed (played all season with one arm (the other was in a sling all season) due to shoulder injury in the second game of the season)
2010 76 Tackles, 11.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 4 passes defensed

I think in the right situation any nfl qb can be successful. Im confident we can win games with alex if we play to his strengths. He wont be a probowler but he can put together good performances. Just needs to be more consistent.

P.s. joe flacco = alex smith without ravens D

Now that's what I'm talking about. This man deserves top 3 DE money and top 10 defender in the league money. Strong against both the run and pass. 76 tackles last year, best 2-way DE in the league.

You gonna post that in the BBI topic I stole it from?

Another setback for Emmanuel Sanders.....

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/02/steelers-wideout-emmanuel-sanders-out-three-weeks/

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Sanders will be out three weeks following complications after two foot surgeries this offseason. Sanders sat out the start of training camp, but it was believed to be precautionary.

Instead, we’ve learned Sanders didn’t recover as expected from surgery on his heel. Sanders took an injection in his left foot that took bone marrow from his heel to speed healing process. That doesn’t sound good.

No, that doesn't sound good at all. Bring in Steve Smith, Malcolm Floyd or any of the other FA's still out there.

Aside from being able to put his uniform on, what are his strengths?

The Bengals are getting active in free agency. They lead the league with $41 million of cap room.

Someone forget to tell the Bengals free agency started last Tuesday?

A Joe Flacco v. Alex Smith debate? Serious?

Next, let me post a picture of two giant shits my dog just took and we can debate the merits of each.

IF the Steelers had some money to spend, I'd want it spent on OL or DB. Send Brown or Sweed out there, there are more pressing needs.

This.

Sanders was a 4th Wide Receiver anyway. there's no need to panic even with him out for the first bit.

That said, Antonio Brown is going through a sophomore slump in Training camp.

Joe Flacco is an elite quarterback. Just ask him, he'll tell you.
After hearing how he was ready to improve, just needed another weapon to compliment old man Mason, I bought into the hype last year and picked him up in a number of fantasy teams....

...what a mistake. Even with the additions of Boldin and TJ Houshmandzadeh he still couldn't produce. The guy is the crown prince of checkdowns.

Ray Rice: 63 catches
McClain: 21 catches
McGahee: 14 catches

And that's ignoring the TE receptions.

The Ravens were 20th in the league in pass yards and he started all season. Flacco is putrid.

I could have told you that.

In fact, pretty sure I did.

Even Freeman had more Fantasy points (and tacos) than Flacco. At least in my league.
