Goodenow has been smoking pot. He keeps claiming they got a better deal now then they could have had earlier. He brings up the lowering of free agency age. Let's take a look at this:
1. Player can become a free agent at an earlier age.
2. Teams offering free agents contracts, are bound by a team cap.
So, based on point #2, how does point #1 matter at all?
You don't have to have ANY familiarity with Goodenow, the NHLPA or the issues invovled to see that he was spinning like a DUB rim, and looked pretty damn uncomfortable doing so to boot. He clearly hates this deal, but he's gotta tow the party line just so he can save a bit of face.
Again, the deal is pretty good for the players considering I thought the players would be lucky to get a cap number over 35 mill, and the minimum pay increase is a HUGE concession by the owners. Outside of the cap number, they were never going to get a better deal than this anyway (seriously, Bettman needing just 8 votes for veto power was one of the most lopsided advantages in the history of CBA negotiating), so in that sense I don't consider it to be a loss. Where the players got fucked up the ass was losing the year in pay, and doing so for nothing. That's why they come off looking so bad.

I don't understand why they have to do the drawing behind closed doors. Why can't they just do it live. Total bullshit. Its probably an auction.
The NBA lottery is done the same way...draw is done behind closed doors with the team's officials, then the results are read out in descending (or is that ascending? whatever) order in front of cameras, with the team reps on that stage having no idea what the result is. It actually makes for some pretty cool TV, particularly the Lebron draft lottery of a couple years ago.
Oh yeah, kudos to the NHL for coming around on televising it...though why they didn't decide to do that in the first place is beyond me, and doesn't give me much hope for this "brand new partnership".
