The new iPod universal dock and remote control ($70 total) just killed my plans on getting an Onkyo iPod adapter ($100) for my receiver =P

One thing I want to ask... can we put our OWN things on it, ala PSP? I was going to buy a PSP for Family Guy on the go, but I will buy this now if I can use it instead!

Well, it does say that you can watch "home movies" (read home porn! ;) ) on it so, there must be a way to get your own content on it. That may mean that iMovie now exports to the iPod though. Never fear, it will be hacked! :)

I wonder if I can buy a TV episode from iTunes, and convert it for use on my Archos AV 400. May have to give that a try since the AV 400 does MPEG4 playback.

Damn, between the PS3, Apple's support for Blu-Ray, and now this remote and docking stuff, the whole Sony/Apple/Dell trifecta is really looking to crush Microsoft's home-server and "living room assimilation" dreams.

Not buying iPod video.

Are there any other video/MP3 alternatives that aren't the size of a brick?

Um, brick? They are SMALLER than the current 4G iPods. Engadget says they are the same width and height, but thinner.

I need to see someone holding a 5G.

Not without analog converting it first, all purchases have DRM built in (I believe a feature of H.264's spec is to allow DRM to be coded in)

They could have at least decided to throw in a Mighty Mouse with the PowerMac's... Now the iMac looks like a much better deal...

Engadget's wrong, the unit is DEFINITELY wider than the existing model. Not significantly, but enough to look awkward when you wrap your fingers around it.

if the DRM is the standard fairplay you can use jhymn to crack it. if it is a new fairplay then who knows.

I'm talking about multimedia players from other companies outside of Apple.

The 5G could be as thin as the Nano for all the good it does ... a 2.5 inch is a total half-assed job by Apple.

Really, as cool as the whole "white/silver back" design was 2-3 years ago, I think Apple will lose their iron grip on this market if they start to make half-assed products like this.

i'm surprised there is so little bitching on the screen size...

no PSP comparisons!?

Probably because this has TV out and the PSP does not. Can you imagine in a few generations when they are doing HD video? (!)

2.5" with TV out is awesome. you might be completely insane.

Just doesn't get it.
Over and over and over again.

No one makes smaller hard drive based players than Apple (at least with the same feature set). It's not that much to wrap your head around.

next year trust that you will see a wide screen Apple New Sexy :D

people who buy this now will have to drool over the 80/120gb monsters :)

i like how they dont tell you the battery life for playing videos

30GB: Up to 14 hours of music playback; up to 3 hours of slideshows with music; up to 2 hours of video playback

60GB: Up to 20 hours of music playback; up to 4 hours of slideshows with music; up to 3 hours of video playback

How is 2.5" "awesome"?

A friggin' regular GBA with Play-Yan has a bigger screen for video than that.

Good luck finding a 60GB SD card.

First you are bitching that it is a brick and now the screen is too small? Make up your mind dude.

Yup, I'm pretty sure that's all but in the cards. This model is just a cash grab to screw over Christmas shoppers. The "real" i-Pod Video will come out in the next six months.

My guess is that the small screen is best for music videos and you can use the video out when you want to view it on a larger screen. The screen is a pretty small for extended viewing, such as watching a movie. Other than that, this is a pretty nice product. How can anyone complain about the iPod being too large. Of course, you can go for the Archos Gmini 402 which has a 2.2 inch screen, and the new version is going to come with a built in camcorder. Talk about your home made porn machine! :)

Can you guys friggin' read?

I never said the i-Pod was too big.

Ok, let's assume for a second that I'm stupid. What does this mean then? You made it sound like you were not buying the iPod because it is the size of a brick.

Not buying iPod video.

Are there any other video/MP3 alternatives that aren't the size of a brick?

Ok listen. Apple isn't calling this the iPod Video. That's why there's isn't a 5" screen or whatever on this. This is still here to please people who only want a small MP3 player with large capacity and don't care about video. But it also please people who want to watch video on the go every now and then, but also so they can connect it to the dock and video out to a TV. Personally I will never buy a portable video player with a big screen. Doesn't make much sense to me. Having the ability to watch video on the run if I want in a small form factor, plus being able to use the dock at home is the perfect mix in my opinion.

Also, I think people are going to be very surprised at how small the 5G is when they see it in person. Kinda like the Nano.

you know, I'm ok. Like I said, it would be clever to do this a few times a year (maybe even a few times a month) but overall I use it as a music player, and with that nothing is added to the ipod.

If it actually comes out with better firmware all the better.

It means that I was asking for alternatives to the i-Pod video (from other manufacturers) that are reasonably sized, since Apple is not offering a video solution with a decent sized screen.

Jeebus. :lol

you want a bigger screen but the same size? have you looked at the 5G ipod? it's like asking for more a gallon of milk but you want a container smaller than a gallon?

I want Front Row, but I guess it only works with the new iMac? Also, I think Apple is testing the water with this iPod, maybe another step from iPod Photo, but I think a true iPod Video should be from ground up a different design.

I see a lot of dead space on the 5G i-Pod.

Why does the click wheel have to take up like half the face surface? The Nano has a much smaller click wheel that works just fine.

I don't think I'm asking for a lot ... for a $400 product to have a screen bigger than at least a Game Boy.

It's a whole 0.4" bigger and has half the resolution.

Good luck finding one. The iPod Video is not a PMP. It's more like the iAudio X5, an MP3 player that can do video.

True. Can't really complain about it though, I bought my mini at the beginning of summer last year.

i just ordered the 60gb black one to match my 4gb black nano!!!! im such a sell out
You kids who immediately order iProduct after announcement never cease to amuse me. :)

i'm still trying to get over 320x240 shows for $2. i'm patient (and busy) enough to wait for the DVD, or catch reruns. Like with iTunes music, it just doesn't add up, at least not for me. i may have to bite the bullet and try one of the videos though, once iTunes 6 finishes installing.

quit comparing it toa gameboy???? by your standards, the micro should cost less than the sp. neither of which have a 60 GB hard drive....settle down

^^^^ aoi. you have to admit the nano is pure sex. if this video doesnt turn out to be all that great ill sell it on ebay before chritmas where i will be able to get close to what i paid for it. it was too hard to resist

I'm kind of on the fence on the video thing - I don't think it's a big hook for me.

But my question is whether or not this means current iPod models in stores now will see a markdown because of the latest update. I'm going to break eventually and buy one of these damn things.

Dell is promoting Microsoft. As long as MS software is being propagated, MS is satisfied. You don't see any Dells going out preloading with Firefox and Google search software, do you?

And you make it sound like those three companies are working together to "crush" Microsoft, but you can bet your ass Sony is feeling the Apple heat. iPods were terrible for Sony's music hardware business, and this new one will hurt PSP sales by a significant amount.

as others have said, it will probably be comparable to perfect VHS. Compression shouldn't be an issue at the size and codec they are talking about. this isn't for someone who buys DVD. This is about having last night's episode of lost (legally) on your ipod and watching it at your girlfriend's house.

Fans of Apple products (who see the value in them for themselves) get excited and want them right away. It's just the nature of upgrades.
