And for now it looks like the iPods can ONLY playback H.264 (which is going to make encoding your own stuff a bitch)
No harder than encoding video for PSP. Easier actually. Just grab a copy of Quicktime Pro and you can encode H.264 video.

H.264 is MPEG-4 AVC. As long as you use nerodigital or other AVC compliant encoders (like x264 and newer builds of xvid) it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, but encoding of H.264 takes way, way longer than most other codecs--it's how you get the great quality and low file size.

PLUS: He's inviting us to hammer the servers with iTunes 6 downloads! Running Software update now!

You can buy TV shows TODAY

Desparate housewives, lost

(software update not updated with itunes 6 yet, he lied)

bah: only Disney/ABC shows and only 5 so far... basically beta. sweet life of jack and cody, that's so raven, nightstalker are the other three

!

Say US only and I will kill heem. A legit way to buy TV shows is a great idea, provding its not insanely expensive. And I want to watch them on my PC too.

Whats this front row thing? Can I use that to turn a mac mini into a little media centre?

you can buy any of seaons 1's episodes and all current episodes. tonight's Lost can be bought tomorrow, ad free.

$1.99 an episode

I wonder if the TV stuff is regional? Being able to get Lost outside of the US shortly after it's debut over there would be quite a coup.

!!

If they can sync this up like podcasts, so I can take lost with me the next day, thats perfect.

Who is this guy with his 'just one more thing'? Fucking columbo?

$2 an episode is GREAT if it's full frame. OK if it isn't, and perfect either way for people like me who just want to see a series and not shell out for a huge box set.

I've seen conflicting reports -- is it 20GB and 60GB, or 30GB and 60GB?
30/60

quality is actually quite good (even at 320x240). size is about 5 itunes albums for an hour.

Lost Season 1 can be had for 40 on DVD. You would pay more to get it from iTunes.

The ipod has a video out, so the resolution must not be that bad.

He's bullshittin' or from the future. Not a single one of my countless tabs has that reported.

He got other shit way before steve was actually saying it, by IRC standards. i'd say listen.

Biggest Apple event ever.

I hope they score some more deals with other companies for TV shows. That'd be sweet to buy Family Guy the day after it airs.

uhh.. Disney CEO is speaking....

go buy Pixar stock NOW, he's talking about loving Pixar... sounds like now that Eisner is gone they did work out distribution with Disney afterall... if he announces that this is going to be a HUGE COUP. that sounds like what's happening.

320x240 is basically VCD resolution. So, it'll look like that although encoded a bit better.
QUITE a bit better. MPEG-4 AVC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MPEG1

Yea i was gonna say the same thing - $2 doesnt seem like much out of the gate - but for a 26 episode season (or whatever the average is), thats alot o money. A subscription based model would've been better, even though they're gonna make bajillions anyway.

I'd buy that for two dollars!

Exactly how many episodes are in season 1?

24. I'm sure it would not be hard to rip them and put them on your iPod.

I think this new iPod is awesome. :) Don't get me wrong, I was just pointing it out.

Say they got HBO onboard though. You could get a whole Curb Your Enthusiasm season for $20.

26 is a pretty high episode count for a season.

Also, they could have a thing where you can buy a whole season for less then buying each individual episode. Exactly like songs and albums.

"Steve is gushing"

blood?

Alright, wrap up time. Nothing more to see here, folks.

Unanswered questions:
-Can older iPods view video with a firmware upgrade or am I going to shoot the guy from Think Secret? One of those is a true statement.
-Is Apple expanding beyond just ABC TV anytime soon? Will the movie download service end up having anything more than Disney movies? Please Lord.

The average isn't 26, usually half that.

Who knows? VHS has about the same resolution as the 5G iPod's screen (320x240), so that's all it might be. And if the reports of 1hr of video = 5 albums (let's say 200MB), then it's likely only 320x240 since 1hr of medium quality XViD at 640x480 is usually double of that.
