WHY has the regular line been slowing down a bit? because mini/nano ate into it. so apple is giving up a lower margin sale for a higher margin sale...soundwave05 said:Sales of the *regular* i-Pod line is slowing down a bit, the Nano/Mini having been selling well.
umm, you REALLY have no idea what you are talking about. there are guys making 6 figures to research and design this shit. bigger screen affects battery performance, space available inside the unit, weight of the unit, cost overhead, size/thickness, etc. to just say "there is space there" is really borderline retarded. As for the point that the screen can't possibly be any bigger without making the device bigger -- I don't buy it.
The clickwheel doesn't need to be that big, as the Nano already proved. There's a lot of dead space on the face of the unit which could have been allocated to making the screen larger. You could definitely have a bigger screen there without making the product any bigger, and I suspect you're going to see exactly that in about 6-8 months from Apple.
lol. and apple can use those SAME screens in the ipod. :\And if that cost was too much for Apple to swallow -- as a consumer, I gotta say "tough". Even cheap ass Nintendo can put a high-quality 3-inch screen on an $80 Game Boy these days.
yet the regular ipod was still seeing steady sales. again you make no sense. This definitely reeks of a Christmas stop-gap product on Apple's part.

NICE! and correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this mean it will play DivX/Xvid out of the box (in an mp4 container of course)?

you are charged for the purchase immediately, but it registers if the download succeeded or not. if the download didn't succeed it remains on your account to redownload. this is handled client side (and why you can use programs like SharpeMusic to redownload purchased songs even after you download them the first time). The Faceless Master said:yoiu actually tried to buy something knowing that the site is beig hammered and are shocked it didnt complete?

yes it does. go into your apple.com account (through itunes) and it will be there as a purchase ready to download.ManaByte said:Nope.

iPod: Music, photos, movies
Archos/Video devices: movies, photos, music
PSP: Games, movies, music, photos, online
Cell Phones: Phone, camera, games, music, photos, video, online
PDA's: Applications, music, movies, photos, online,
Gizmondo: Games, GPS, music, movies, photos, online
I think Cell phones are the biggest competition for them all, because everybody will have a cell phone.
there are over 200 manufacturers of DAPs out there. You really think apple is in the position they are in because there is no competition?soundwave05 said:Which often happens in a market when one company dominates thouroughly. Apple needs some real competetion in the portable arena, today's product announcements just made that a lot more clear to me.

uuggh.. I give up.

so lucky for apple every other company sucks or is in some way deficient? bullshit. now you are just being obtuse to the achievments apple has made in the DAP industry. Do you really think apple is where they are solely because of marketing? Here is a clue for you. I love my ipod. The thing controls like a wet dream. the itunes/ipod interface is as slick as they come and buying tunes is a simple as clicking a button.soundwave05 said:I don't believe there's any competetion from any company that makes Apple sweat.
The Archos/iRivers/etc. of the world will never be able to compete with Apple and Apple knows that.
Sony is the one company that really could, but they're so mired in corporate political bullshit that they can't get anything done.
Hopefully for the consumer's sake, this situation will change and Apple will be forced to compete moreso in the future. Right now, it's a joke.

soundwave05 said:I dunno, I have my brother's i-Pod in front of me, seems like you'd be able to still use it fine with one hand, even if the clickwheel was only on the very botton 1/3 of the unit.
The i-Pod isn't *that* heavy.

Nash said:It's not so much the weight, as how uncomfortable it would be to use a shrunken clickwheel in that position. It's just not the right angle for the thumb at all. Your thumb falls naturally where the clickwheels are at the moment.

Kung Fu Jedi said:As a point of comparison, my Archos AV 400, with a 4.5 inch screen gets about 5 hours of battery life (larger battery than the iPod) and the 20 GB drive stores about 80 hours of video, depending on how it's encoded. Mine currently has the entire third season of Alias, all three Star Wars OT DVD's ripped, an episode of the US version of The Office, the latest episode of Surface, and all the pictures from my vacation last year. Still has something like 8 GB's free or something.

I use this baby as my portable video player. The screen is totally badass when it is used in its widescreen mode and it plays everything you can throw at it without encoding it all night. I do like the idea of being able to buy television shows though, so that is a nice plus for apple, but if I am buying a TV show I want it at a HD resolution.
Oh yeah, my Axim doubles as a kickass ereader and GPS solution now too.![]()

and I appear to only have the video, not the song. I'll try tomorrow to see if I can sync to my nano. DRM is listed as 'fairplay 2'
Still, I consider this a 'soft' launch. some TV, some pop videos. only 2 hours playback on the 30GB! Get the wheels turning ready for the proper ipod video. I'll hold on 6 months before rebuying a big HDD unit again.
correct. in reality the video is costing you $1.ckohler said:For 1.99 you get the music video and the music file both.
