Official Soul Calibur III thread

SoulBlade intro is good but its not as good as this. The music in this intro is just amazing :D and some of those shots :o but to be fair Soul blade intro was great for years and has taken its time to look dated. It deserves respect.

The fire stage in motion looks cool.

The devs did say because they aren't trying to make it for 3 different systems, they got a lot more time devoted to the game's mechanics and with looking how packed the game is, it certainly shows.
It's PR. When the game went single platform, Team Calibur shed staff accordingly (who then went to work on Tales of Legendia of all things). Porting likely wouldn't have effected development at all really, the resources needed for that are nothing compared to initial game design.

So what do you guys think will happen six months from now? An arcade version with some extra features, and later on an upgrade with some new characters followed by a next-gen console release?
I'm starting to think Namco maybe sacrificed their multiplatform release for next gen ports down the road (getting a nice Sony kickback being a bonus). GameCube/Xbox are waning already and Namco probably thinks they can get better mileage out of upgraded 360/Revolution releases anyway.

Love the whole cinematic feel of the trailer, and the epic sense of an oncoming despair... but I have an issue with the animation between Ivy and Cervantes -- just lacks weight and conviction. Same with Mitsurugi and the new kimono chick, doesn't really feel like they're interacting with each other. Still won't leep me from buying the game, of course. Can't have enough of it.

Yeah great intro but still not as good as Soul Edge.

Tira's smile is perfect when she goes in for the attack. :)

Can't wait for this...my arcade stick awaits.
Tira's mood swings are suppose to be a big part of her personality. Cant wait to see how she is when she's cranky :)

We'll be getting excited about TTT2 on the PS3. :P And SC3, it'll still be exclusive and NAMCO will be thinking of what they'll be doing with SC4 on a next gen system or systems.

I'm so itching to see what next-gen Tekken looks like, on the visual front the ball is in there court now after what's been seen of other fighters.

Looks awesome :D

I'm getting pumped up. Shame it aint online. I would have loved playing people from here. That fire stage looks really cool.

yeah it looks great but che seems so negative about most of the things :lol when you see the video review you cant believe it actually got a 9.0.

Yeah but they are extras. So you can fault the extras flaws but they add alot of value to the game at the same time. Typical Namco formula. Love the intro. Would be great if 1up did a high res direct feed. :D

Single player stuff does sound pretty dissapointing, but OMG the game looks so fantabulous!! The crazy juggles, the insane neon particles that go off with each hit, it's a beauty! Some of the new movesets looks really sweet too, particularly some of the stuff Nightmare and Talim pull off early in the vid.

Shoulda known someone at 1up would create a Yorda. :)

AWESOME! I am confirmed totally gay for the SC3 artist - Aya Takemura!

The best part is I can go totally gay for all these awesome artists without fear of bending over because they're all magically turning out to be chicks who can draw awesome underboobies and other such greatness.

Man, seriously - finding out an artist I admire is a woman elicits the same chemical reaction from my brain that most guys get when they see two Playbots making out in faux lesbian action.

There's some of her art in the latest OPM. Check it out fans.

Now if only Konami would get Yozora to do character designs for Castlevania I would explode into a mess of tissues and fluids the likes of which the world may never see again.

*fap fap fap*

Now I just need to weigh the decision of picking up SC3 now, or later. :X

I can't wait for the inevitable 'Post your SCIII created characters' thread that will appear shortly after the games release. Should be a blast. :D

Just got done watching the video review. If I hadn't already played the OPM demo, the video footage alone would have been enough to sell me on the game - it really does look amazing, particularly the backgrounds.

Despite Che's nitpicks regarding the single-player content, I'm still enthusiastic about that aspect of the game - there's a lot more meat there than there is in any other fighting game out there, and as someone who spends most of his time playing one-on-one fighters solo (and enjoying it), I appreciate the variety. The AI sounds no worse than what you'd find in 99.9% of the other fighting games out there (and the big difficulty spike near the end/boss cheese is old hat for anyone who's played an SNK fighter, heh.)

I really think the obligatory 'if you have no friends' crap when talking about the single-player features in fighters needs to go, though - I'm a little fucking tired of the implication that anyone who doesn't live in a dorm/review games for a living/is otherwise surrounded by people to play fighting games against is some kind of friendless hermit--reviewers, can you find something else to pad that portion of reviews with from now on, please? Thanks.

Okay. If you have no friends who are into fighting games. Better?

Exactly. You can't get any better at a fighting game if you don't have friends who actually know what they're doing. That's why I suck at SCII so bad, not cause I don't play with friends, but because no one knows what they're doing (though of course they say they do). Meanwhile, playing guys online that rape me on 3rd Strike has taught me alot.

Namco need to start making online games. We need a big name fighter to be online soon. Hopefully Tekken. :)

Would be great if they did a ladder system without leaving the losers out.

I have to wait till end of november for this game.

Much. :) Just sick of reviewers implying that anyone who would actually care about the single-player content in a fighting game must not have any friends. :p (I don't know - maybe some people honestly do think that's the case. I think a lot of reviewers, being surrounded by other gamers, forget how tough it is for the average person to find a bunch of people to play fighting games with once they're out of college. In my case, I'm looking forward to getting together with a couple of friends of mine for SC III once a week or so, but the three of us will end up spending a lot more time playing solo than we will competing against each other.)

Ok, until the inevitable MAF/Drinky "ALL CAPS" spoogefest thread shows up this evening, I'd figure it's worth bumping the Official thread for impressions.

-The loadtimes are amazing! No more annoying pause hangs between restarts, just fluid uninterrupted immediacy that is comparable to Xbox SC2. This is just based on Story mode so far.

-AI is as psychic as the reviews make it to be. Early fights are a breeze, but the SNK gene creeps in near the final stages and next thing you know it's attempt #30 on Abyss. Oi.

-Story mode is merely ok. The endings return to Soul Edge form with seemingly alternate sequences based on your input timing. The progression itself is a wholly linear rendition of the Edge Master mode complete with oodles of text to decipher how one battle connects to the next. Regardless the selections sometimes lead to one-chance encounters that probably give specific rewards if completed before being spit back on track win or lose. This could get ugly if that super cool sword is buried eight chapters deep into a campaign and a loss means a total restart.

-Graphics are insane, 480p/16:9 confirmed. No Japanese voicetrack to be found, and Cam Clarke is Siegfried while Cassie is a total ditz.

-GUARD IMPACT 4 LYFE!

Just finished off playing the full game for a few minutes. I must be stupid, because I can't figure out where you can use your custom character in a 1 player game. Hmmmm....

And do you unlock more movesets? I want the Hwang custom character class, but it's not there in the starting set.

These two facets are heartily dissapointing to me as they would effect my main playtime with it. Damn :(

You have to unlock alot of stuff to really dig into the game. Character create needs to have stuff unlocked.

I hope Kilik has had good changes. He was superb in SC1 and SC2. His Sc2 additions werent that great but he kicked ass anyway.

Suck.

After you've created a character, can you go back and update their appearance with any newly unlocked features? Or would you need to create an entirely new character?

You can freely edit your created characters. By default, you get a pretty large lineup of old standby fighters available at the start for VS. mode, but you really don't get too much in the way of Costume pieces by default. They seem to unlock often though.

I created a saint-type fighter just for fun, and he has some hilarious staff moves. Hit both attack buttons(+forward maybe) to whip out the biggest staff-jab in fighting game history. It's ridiculous.

I really wish these games would include a more in-depth options screen for languages. For instance, I'd like to have Raphael and some others still speak English, and have Shitsurugi garbledeygookgook in Japanese because I don't care STABEING U IN FACE!

How is the character creation mode? Can a male character use Ivy's whip sword?

Thanks.

Played for two hours with MAF. I stuck with Cassie by and large, and he alternated between Setsuka and Zasalamel. Initial impressions: AWESOME. The stages are BEAUTIFUL in 16:9 480p. The game is mind-numbingly gorgeous. Greg Kasavin is dumb. :D

Character tiering has changed dramatically, too, I think. Raph and Xianghua are now meh, Cassie got upgraded, Nightmare sucks, and Seung Mina/Kilik remain pains in the penis. Siegfried seems good, and Voldo is sadly awesome. No telling how the new characters pan out, but Tira is annoying, and both Setsuka/Zasalamel seem solid.

I used to love Cassie's dragon uppercut air-juggle stuff. Haven't looked up the movelist, but all that stuff is changed and I couldn't figure out how to do anything post-launcher.

Tira's costumes are both horrendous. Zasa looks like lots of fun.

I also tried tourney mode, but the AI ripped me apart. :(

So is MAF gonna create a Hibiki clone?

I can't play on the PS2 pad (have a Hori stick for VF but it's only 3 buttons and SC is 4 :( ) and it seems too late in the systems life to spend $100+ on a good stick since there are almost no fighters left this generation (NG Battle Collesium is the last I guess).

Can anyone suggest a good hand position with the PS2 controller? Also do you think a saturn-style 6 button pad would work for the game?

Answer me this, can I or can I not make a relatively skin colored Taki like model?!

For hand positions, I'd recommend default controls with L1 being Guard and R1 being kick (which might be the default anyway). Most button combinations you need to do can be done like that. A+K can be done with your thumb and index finger and the same for B+G. I wouldn't use an analogy controller for the game either btw. The D-pad is more precise if you're playing with your thumb.

Why spend $100? You should be able to find a solid stick for at least half that amount. You still in Japan?

As for Taki...well the game gives you a couple slots to edit any fighter's costume colors. I haven't tried it out yet, but you can most definately adjust the color scheme of each of their costumes. So umm I imagine you CAN make naked Taki I suppose.

Yes!! Soul Calibur 3 is king of kings!!

Not only are japanese voices in game, most of the samples are recycled. ;)

A bunch of Xianghua's stuff seems to have been remapped/reworked, so I dunno. Haven't been able to sit down with this game yet.

I use the SF Anniversary Collection controllers. Best D-pads out of all PS2 game pads. Just adjust the buttons to reflect the movesets you prefer and you're good to go.

I'm glad I got an offical Namco stick for Soul Edge/Tekken II from a friend for 15 bucks a good while back. It's great for Soul Calibur.

Xianghua is now meh? WTF? She's my fav fighter. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, all the default character create classes are new?! I thought they were based on the movesets/design of existing characters?

Is it possible to create a dual-wielding swordsman?

And in which single-player modes can you use your custom character? The general impression I'm getting thus far is that custom characters can only be used in Vs and CotS modes. Can anyone check this out?

When in doubt, throw them. I've noticed that the computer holds block for an abnormally long period of time sometimes. Find that opening. For Nightmare, you really need to watch out for those long sweeping horizontal blows. Try ducking them outright and then capitalizing when he leaves himself open. Normally I'd advise parrying the blow but chances are you'll end up in a parry contest with the AI if you do that.

One other thing is that you should try mixing up your stances if you're playing with a character that has multiple stances. The AI is less likely to block when you do that. This is all on normal, btw. I don't have any idea whether it'll apply at higher levels.
