Official Virtua Fighter 5 Thread

Eh, I'd say it's a lot worse than just being "not as in-depth".

VF5 has a command list and it even shows you how to do the harder attacks. But that's it. Just knowing how to pull off moves isn't going to help someone new to the game actually learn how to play.

VF5's training is the equivalent of the recent Def Jam Icon demo on X360 if it had a move list. Sure you'd know how to pull off moves, but if you hadn't played the Def Jam games before you'd have no idea how to play.

Yeah I think they're the same.

How about sidestepping, guard-something and perfect landings that you talked about. Do they let you practise that or is that an undocumented technique like wavedashing in ssbm.

Pretty sure that he means it is just a plain ass training mode. Like street fighter but with a command list.

Yeah right now if you're not going to splash out for a PS3, Evo's your best bet. Not that that should have mattered as it's a steal when it first came out anyway. Budget priced but fully featured VF with a whole bunch of extras? Sign me up! Sorry I didn't mean to turn the post into a Evo lovefest, but it's that good.

Does it at least have command training where you go through each move in a fighter's list one by one? I got a lot of use out of that one.

Yeah, it has that. That's pretty much essential for a 3d fighter these days IMO. Any fighter without that is a failure since learning moves without that sucks.

that is my biggest complaint about the PSN download of Tekken 5 DR.. no practice mode at all... and there are 36 characters on the roster, and not having a practice mode forces me to play the same 4 character I use over and over and over without picking up a new one

I've got the same problem... I've racked up a 500-120 something record with Lili, because I can barely try the other characters.

On a side note, is that ~$50 Hori stick on Play-asia any good?

Reno, here's my Akira:

2ndary outfit: (camera started running out of batteries at this point so I had like 1/4th a second to hit the snap button, so all the pictures from here on suck)

And while taking these pics I got a new item and changed my main outfit:

Got this a few days ago and finally fired it up. Seems pretty fun so far.. I don't like some of the animations but otherwise its good to see such a colorful game with semi-realistic texture work.

Genius.

To the other people actually playing the game, what's a good character to learn the basics ? I've never spent much time with the VF games so I need some pointers.

Pai, Lau, Jacky, Sarah probably. Brad and Kage as well but they're a little tougher to get a grasp on.

Personally I think you can start with Akira as long as you are using a stick and can pull his stuff out consistently.

Cool thanks, I'll probably try Akira then.

Yeah, ummm...after a day or so if you feel frustrated or feel like you don't 'get' VF. Stop trying to use Akira and use one of the beginner characters. Also since VF5 has no mode to teach you the basics, go read some faqs online on both the overall gameplay and on the specific character you decide on.

Personally I started with Lau in VF1/2, went to Kage in VF4 and then moved into Akira in VF4&5.

I chose Pai to start with too, but mainly for her underlying ChunLiness. There's a certain kick she does (I think diagonally up/towards) that when done from far away, the AI doesn't seem to bother blocking 70% of the time, even when playing 9th/10th Dans. I've won countless matches 'cheating' like this... I need to unlearn it, so I think I'll move onto a new character soon. Possibly Lau or Brad.

Or play humans :P

I'll admit that against the cpu if I'm in a pinch and it's a tournament match or an item battle I'll just hop back and do a F,F,F+P elbow as the CPU comes at me as it hits them EVERY TIME. But that doesn't work at all against my human friends so it doesn't really help much in the long run besides pimping out my character.

The AI is good, but it's also kinda dumb and like how in SF games you used to be able to sweep the CPU non-stop, you can find something with probably every character in VF5 that confuses the cpu and hits them 100% of the time.

I'd recommend using Kage, Jacky or Lau if you're a first-time player.

If you're into fighting games but you haven't played VF before, you can afford to go with more difficult characters or those who are better suited to your style of play. In Street Fighter I was always better with grapplers so I went with Wolf as my first character in VF.

Goddamnit. Went to Gamecrazy last night to pick it up.

"Sorry, delayed for two weeks while they add 'something.'"

Zuh? It's always been scheduled for the 20th

Am I missing a joke? :(

The game looks gorgeous, but I still can't believe they didn't include online multiplayer modes, especially considering the Xbox360 version will (or maybe precisely because of that...)

Same with Virtua Tennis 3. I'm spotting a trend here.

Do you know something we don't know. Can't say I've heard anything about the 360 version of VF5 having online play.

There won't online multiplayer for the xbox 360.

Sssh. You will bring out the two-frame counter Nazis.

There will be no online multiplayer mode on 360.
Confirmed, set in stone, final.

As I've said just wait and see. You'll think about me when they announce it.

BTW the game's probably really early in its development and nothing is set in stone until the moment you have the final game in your hands.

It's posts like these that make me wish I could reach through my screen and slap the offending poster across the face.

Anyone had any problems running this on a US machine? It works fine on my japanese ps3 but is a mess on my friends US ps3. Doesn't recognise the controllers and a bunch of other weirdness.

God of War 3 will be an exclusive on the 360. Just wait and see. You'll think of me when they announce it.

I think everyone here besides Reno, DCharlie and Myself are playing this on a US unit and no one has reported any problems like that so....probably your friend's PS3 or controllers?

Relax, man. Besides, I didn't make it up. Let's just say I have my sources.
Yeah right lol, I don't they would ever make a VF with online VS play...

Internet just isn't fast enough for it to be lag free.

But realistically I can see the 360 version having a mode where they do some thing like Ghost data or just your friends customized characters appear in a specialized quest mode.

Got to love those no lose situations. It has online, "OMG BITCHES I WAS RIGHT TOLD YOU!" It doesnt have online, "They changed it later on, I told you it wasn't confirmed".

BTW Xbox 360 will get another PS3 exclusive later this year! I have my sources!

Yep, shoulder button was jammed down

I popped in my VF4 EVO to compare the training mode to VF5, and holy crap... makes you wonder why they cut all of that out in VF5.

Another thing I miss was the mini-quests at the arcades that you could do in EVO, like throw X player 5 times. It's fun going around to the different arcades, but gimme some variety once in awhile. Defending against a demotion only gets so old.

im most likely gonna get in trouble for skipping classes when VF5 comes out, but it will be all worth it, but im pissed that it doesnt seem like Play-asia or NCSX has the VSHG in stock or has open preorder slots or anything like that.

I think it's because VF5's system is so new, that a lot of the more detailed strategies, max damage combos, and other defensive techniques are not fully discovered yet. VF4:EVO was released after a lot of that stuff was already wide out in the open.

I haven't been following this thread closely, but I saw a Hori PS3 stick at Fry's today for $50. I was wondering if it is a quality stick and worth the cash.

Also of topic but weird, Fry's had Japanese Wii remotes and classic controllers for sale.

It's ok. I'm using it right now and having a good time. I'd rather be using the high grade but it was sorta recalled so I'm just going to sit and wait a few months until it exists again.

I can pull off the majority of my moves/combos with the stick but yeah, diagonals are like 50/50. Pulling off a df,df+P punch or even just a df+P on a downed opponent is never garaunteed with that stick :\ It's still good enough that given the level of me & my friends I don't feel it puts me at a dis-advantage (especially since my friend uses the Sixaxis, which is even worse for pulling off moves consistently) so it's good enough for now.

I'd say it's worth the price. A $50 stick won't be as good as a $100 stick, but it'll get the job done and be fun to use.
