Official Virtua Fighter 5 Thread

Good gravy, I suck at this game. I cannot get past the six stage in arcade mode. I start feeling like a badass when I block and then counter the CPU, but I can never keep it up. I must of played stage six with Jacky last night like 12 times before I quit because 30Rock was about to come on. The reason I kept trying was because it never felt cheap. I knew why I was getting my ass handed to me; I just didn't have the skills to beat him. Oh, and the dude I was trying to beat was that old drunken style fighter guy (don't no his name).

Also I found out my over scan problem. I have a 1080P LCD TV. The PS3 is set to 480p/720p/1080p. I will get over scan if the PS3 boots directly into the game, but if I manually launch the game from the PS3 dashboard, I don't get any over scan.

To the Pros...

How does Brad ranked on the "ease of use scale"?? I'm pretty new to the series with this game, and he's the character I started playing with. Did I pick a hard character to learn or what?

Brad is intermediate level. Go with Jacky, Sarah, Pai, Eileen, El Blaze, or Lau if you want an easier character.

Is this game playable with just the sixaxis?

Or do you have to have the arcade stick in order to make this game playable?

It's totally playable. I personally like the fact that you have the shoulder buttons as the K+G, P+K, P+K+G, P+G and using those is the key when using the sixaxis for play in VF5.

yo Zeenbor, fly your carcass back up here in the North East so we can have a couple of matches

or else I will have to go down there in SoCal and parry your SA3 again :lol

Not going up to Montreal until July for Luis baby being born... Anyway, on topic... What's the best strategy for Lei-Fei vs Pai... Pai is so quick that, as Lei-Fei, I have to resort to F+P, P and then a follow up of B+P, P (chop, chop, punch, punch) to some what match her speed, but the timing has to be perfect... Are there any fast moves with Lei-Fei that I can use to beat her to the punch?

Sorry if this has already been asked in here, but would it be better for my 1080p Sony LCoS to scale VF5, or to have the PS3 actually output at 1080p (with video settings set exclusively to 1080p)?

VF5 only displays in 720p, so no.

Holy shit.

As I stated before I missed out on EVO(but not EVO) so I never played the quest mode.

And...

DAAAAAAMN!

It's so freaking slick!! I'm loving everything about it. This might be the best single player experience I've seen with a fighting game. It really does the best it can to bring the arcade experience home(although playing AI will never match playing real life people)

I WAS having so much fun until I decided to go into a tournament with low battery life on my controller. In the middle of the first match the controller died I couldn't find the usb cable(which apparently my brother had... ugh) and I lost the match. First thing that came to my mind was... DON'T LET THAT SHIT SAVE. Unplugged the shit lol.

Does it automatically save after the match or did I save my record and chance to win that tourny?

Good thing you don't play Animal Crossing :D

If your TV has a weak scaler it could introduce 1/10th second of lag or something, which would be an issue at times in VF.

So if you have a 1080p tv, it's probably best to set it to 1080p UNLESS it looks bad (jaggies or what not from the scaling) in 1080p, which in that case you should just play at the better looking 720p as you'll probably never notice the miniscule lag even if it exists.

Dang man, I'm watching Srider's videos on gamevideos.com and I really don't think I'm cut out to be anything but a novice at this game. The videos are labeled "Basics" and yet you're showing stuff that requires a sixth sense... One thing I know for sure, I really need to work on defense and evasion, but I don't think there's any hope for me at an advanced level

Note that Srider has been playing this game for 6+ years. :)

I've been playing for around 5 years.

And still, for me, many of these concepts aren't second nature yet.

If you look at the first part movement video and see that kind of box stepping, it's a little exaggerated. What IS very useful is crouch dashing after an evade, or backdashing and then evading, in one clean motion.

For the real basics, it's best to just concentrate on knowing your chosen character inside out, especially knowing the properties of your character's moves. Movement and defense are vital, but they come with time.

Find people in your area to play with! It'll increase the fun exponentially !

Oh I'm sure of that, but I don't have any friends or even much spare time. I've got a family to pay attention to and I have to stay up well past a normal bed time to even play games as it is.

But I appreciate the tips, I'll keep working on it

No prob. It's a shame we can't fight online or something, but I'm sure I'll see you in other games :D

Srider: Nice, so nice.

Me: I'm so good I'm awesome I beat El Blaze once it was sweet

Anyways, I'm hella digging the Quest mode. It is so much ****ing fun. But it's hard not to notice it is gimped. I mean online had a lot of potential with the items. A lot. And to know that my friends can't bring their character over? Cmon now.

Oh yea, how many wins is considered a streak and how much money do you get for a loss after a streak. I have 30 sumthin wins and no losses and I'm building it up to lose for some money but I don't know how much is enough..

Picked it up today at Bestbuy for $49.99. Props to whoever posted that $10 off coupon. The scan didn't work but they just typed in the code. Game looks good, especially the characters, but like others have said, some of the stages are a little bland. The game is also a little less crisp than I would expect because the screen caps in this thread have been so awesome. I'm gonna tweak around with the HDTV settings in the dashboard to see if 1080i/1080P would make a difference.

Now I just need to pickup a decent joystick. I'm going to try my Tekken 5 stick with my PC/USB adapter for PS2 controllers. It worked for Resistance with the Dualshock2, hopefully it'll work for VF5. That Tekken stick is not that great though.

Has anybody tried both the Sega and the Hori stick? Which one is better? Also, is either one coming to the States? I've decided to invest in a better stick for VF5 and Tekken5DR.

When does the 360 version come out?

This thread is about the ps3 version. And if you are interested in the xbox 360 version you would already know when it comes out or know where to find the answers, ign.com, gamespot.com, etc.

nice stealth trolling.

Im not sure I would call that trolling since he owns a PS3.

To answer your question Konex,August,I believe.

Does anyone know if there is an online moves/strategy guide for VF5?

(Sorry if it has already been posted, I'm trying to avoid wading through so many pages)

I am rocking out with the SIXAXIS. I've gotten 3 characters promoted to 8th dan at this point without any problems. The moves pretty much come out how I want them to. I was considering spending the extra cash on an arcade stick, but now I'm thinking it might not be necessary.

the game's quest mode is a lot better put together than kumite from VF4.

does anyone know what that money bag thing that appears randomly is?

If the money bag is on your side of the screen, chances are you lost the match and got paid proprotionatly to how long your win streak was. If it shows up in a chest, then you won it. If it shows up for your opponent, it doesn't effect you at all.

Hey guys, thanks for the positive feedback.

I have a lot of content in the works. So definitely look for it in the near future, I will start going into character specific stuff and I'm sure there will be interesting and useful stuff for everyone.

Great vids, do Jacky first (:
Btw, where can I find video's of VF5 tournament? I'm very interested in watching how the pro's play against one another.

I rented the game today because I haven't played a VF since part 2 I think and VF isn't the type of fighter I really like..

And yeah, I don't think I'm cut out for this game:lol . Extremely complex and I don't think I'll ever 'get it'.

It looks REALLY GOOD on a HDTV though.

Damn my thumbs are raw for playing VF5 two hours straight. Almost makes me want to buy an arcade stick.

You still get wrist problems if you are new to arcade sticks, just like the thumb problems. If you play a lot, you will develop this hard part on your thumbs that will make you not feel the pain. I used to play fighting games on the pad for like 6 hrs a day. If you play consistently, it will develop in about a week and a half (depending on if you take days worth of breaks or not, it could take longer).

These are pretty much all the top Japanese players. He has about 200+ videos. Even though they aren't tournaments these are the videos you want to be watching to see what high level VF5 play is like.
Thanks, great vids!!! I'm a VF fan ever since the original, but never took the time to get good. I can't really comprehend everything thats going on, but I can tell their at a much higher level than I am. All the counters, side steps, combos, etc, amazing.

I got the game tonight, and maybe it is because it is so early in the morning, but I really don't seem to fully understand Quest Mode. I started out at the first little Club Sega arcade, labeled for "beginners and intermediate players" and I played like 30 matches there, didn't lose, and got to 1st Dan. I noticed that my rank meter was no longer going up at all, so I went to some other arcade for "intermediate" only.

I'm still getting nothing. Do I have to go all the way to advanced to get any more rank? I know they'll kick my ass as I currently am still pretty awful :lol. Also, all my oponents in the intermediate tournament were higher rank than me, but I still wasn't getting anything. Do I have to just play more games?

Also, I have no idea how you get money. I see a little cash bag at the bottom right of the screen after some matches, but I've never received cash. This happens when I beat someone. Are they getting the cash (what kind of sense does that make)? I did win 1500 (lol, not much!) in an item battle.

Help me!

Edit: I honestly don't see what the fuss is about the graphics, though. They're pretty bad honestly. Some things look nice, and others look terrible... very inconsistent. Nothing looks particularly amazing. The game is amazing though so it isn't a big deal.

Well, my ranking WAS actually going up it seems, just one nanometer per match so I didn't notice. Magically, opponents with much higher win totals started showing up at the arcade and started giving me a slight bit more. I still don't know how to get money though! This is a freaking blast though, that is for sure.

You have to fight opponents of the same rank to level up quickest. i.e. if you're 1st Dan, beat three 1st Dan players in a row and you will move up to 2nd Dan. On the other hand, if you're 1st Dan and you lose three matches in a row to another 1st Dan, you go down to 1st Kyu.

Sometimes I don't go up any for beating people above my rank :/ It seems fairly uneven, but in general someone at my rank or a bit above will give me some experience.

I just wish money were easier to come by. I've managed, through tournaments, to make about 18,000... of which I wasted 9,500 on the tiger scratch upper body piece for Brad because I thought it would make him shirtless... which it doesn't... and it apparently saves whatever you do in the item shop without even prompting you. It will take FOREVER to get the money to buy even a third of that stuff, though I suppose I already know which costume I want to focus on so it shouldn't be too bad, and there is always the chance of winning some clothes.

I really need to play with Lei-Fei though... he really has the best outfits. Brad's are pretty universally terrible.
