'Wolverine' claws to top of box office. Prequel nabs record bow for Fox with $87 mil

Marking a howling start for the summer box office, 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” grossed $87 million from 4,099 runs at the domestic box office.

That’s the second-best opening of the four “X-Men” movies after “X2: X-Men United,” which had the advantage in opening over Memorial Day in 2003. “X2” grossed $102.1 million for the four-day holiday weekend.

“Wolverine’s” impressive bow came despite a working copy of the movie being pirated a month before the film’s opening. Studio isn’t sure how much the piracy ate into the box office, but some insiders suggest it could be as much as $20 million.

The Fox-Marvel prequel is the widest opening in Fox’s history.

Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” offering an alternative for women, opened to $15.3 million from 3,175 runs to land at No. 2 after “Wolverine.”

"Wolverine" dropped only 15% from Friday to Saturday. Many had thought the pic will drop more, since fanboy-driven movies often see significant declines.

“Ghosts” performed in line with last year’s “Made of Honor,” which opened to $14.8 million on the same weekend a year ago.

That’s also the same weekend that Paramount’s “Iron Man” bowed. “Iron Man” opened to $102 million.

So much for the wild GAF speculation that it would have an enormous drop. :lol :lol Seriously, everyone I know not on the teh internets who has seen it enjoyed it.

$87 Million. Damn, the public was really eager to go out and see a summer flick. Very curious to see how Star Trek does next week though. That is going to be interesting to debate over.

Battle of Terra...I don't know what they expected out of that. Seems like whatever company was handling it gave up hope a long time ago. The marketing was very subdued. A commercial here and there, but no hype whatsoever.

I don't think anybody in their right mind expected to see a drop within a couple days. You can shit talk a movie all you want on Friday, people have already made up their minds by then. Bad word of mouth and reviews scare away the people that might check it out in the following week, unless they start coming out ahead of the movie.

Wow thats really impressive box office for Wolverine. I thought with all the bad reviews it would not do this good. So does this mean there will be more X-men films? Or maybe another Wolverine movie?

wtf @ Taken

STILL in the top 15 and close to $145 mil gross...holy shit

and the DVD is out NEXT WEEK

Most people that went to see it didn't even read the reviews or care.

87 million is alright... not amazing considering multiple things here. That's going to be painfully front loaded, and 2 the 3rd one broke a record on it's opening weekend, which has since been broken. Wasn't it like 115 million? Just saying it's a drop off.

I thought last week's top 5 couldn't get any worse..
the general public really has terrible taste in movies.

also ouch at observe and report. low budget but VERY low return on that one.

"Thinking...thinking....nope, can't think of any other movie."

I know of the pirated version, and I also know (anecdotally) that everyone who saw it wants to see it in theaters anyway, brutal CGI and all.

I'm being dragged to see this today by a group of friends, I'm not expecting to be impressed since I know the second half is a narrative mess.

How about considering other multiple things. Like how it's a spinoff, has really negative fan word of mouth, got leaked online a month before it opened, doesn't continue the story from the first 3 X-men movies, has a shit RT score, etc.

87 million is a really good opening. I don't think anyone can deny that. Star Trek isn't getting anything close to that next week. Cry.

I wonder where Fox is going to take the franchise next. I'll be perfectly honest, as interesting as Magneto might be, I don't think the general public cares enough to see an Origin movie about him.

And as popular as Gambit appears to be because of the 90s cartoon, I have a feeling a spinoff starring him would just end up being another 3rd rate superhero movie, like Elektra. But who knows.

It's all about Demographics. Females like "Chick Flicks", kids like Cartoons, Minorities like movies with Minorities in lead roles, and movies like Wolverine have universal appeal. People are only able to watch what is at the theaters, what do you want the majority of Americans to watch? Observe & Report or Crank 2? Not going to happen :lol The constant bitching at Box Office results is pretty annoying, people have different tastes and they're not shit just because they aren't in line with yours or critics.

Ya thats a great question what is Fox's plan for the franchise? If they do make a magneto movie they better make it lower budget because I dont see it making anywhere near this much money. Are they done making actual X-men movies? If so why when X3 actually did really good box office wise. Why not make a X-men 4 and get Bryan Singer to direct it like he did the first two. Or has he said he is done with that franchise?

87 million, wow.

It could have been $800m if it wasn't for da pirates!!!! /sarcasm.

Still pretty disappointed with Crank's returns. Hope it'll do well on home release.

It's such a low budget film though. It only cost about 7.5 million to make. They are already taking a nice profit.

Wolverine wasn't a horrible movie, just a crappy ending. Theater I went to see it in was 75% full on Friday night at 10:30 pm, crowd laughed along with jokes, reacted to action scenes, etc., seemed to like it.

I dont think you know what "Drop" means.

Wow, I knew Observe and Report underwhelmed but I had no clue it was that much of a bomb. Ouch.

Between Observe & Report and Zack and Miri, studios are probably going to realize that Seth Rogen alone is not enough to give their movies box office success. It's more Judd Apatow's movie formula that brings box office success then Seth Rogen to be honest.

I know it was cheap to make, but i was expecting for it to make more. The last one made around 30 mill domestically.

Taken is a freaking beast. The fact that it actually came up this week is amazing especially considering the dvd is coming out in a little over a week.

Wolverine did about what was expected. Probably see a large drop next week.

Makes one wonder how well it would have done if it was actually good.

nah you missed what I was saying. I said at the time it set a record. I know dark knight holds it at some ridiculous number... I believe 160 right?

There is no such thing as enormous drops in the first weekend. Even Spider-Man 3 looked like it would have great legs its first weekend. It then collapsed.

Why is 17 Again rated more favorable than Wolvering? Why is Crank 2 bombing? How did A Haunting in Connecticut make over $50 million?

Why, Jimmy? Because there is no God.

I noticed my mistake afterwards, but was too lazy to edit :lol

Bah. Jackman deserves better x-men movies, now he'll never get them.

I agree with this.

I'd like to know when the Fox deal with Marvel runs out for making X-men movies.

If I were Jackman, I'd refuse to do any more until a competent studio gets the franchise.

Because for the type of movie 17 Again is trying to be, it's doing a better job of it?:P

Nice opening for a crappy movie. I expect a 55%+ drop next weekend.

Star Trek deserves to do better, but I know it won't. Hope it has better legs.

There can be enormous drops day to day over a weekend that can be very disappointing for a movie's overall gross. I wonder if that's what was being referenced.

shit so crank 2 made a profit? Shit I was hoping it wouldnt make anything, that movie was such utter shit. I mean wtf were they thinking they were trying so damn hard to be cool and edgy or something but it was terrible. One of the worst movies I have ever seen, I actually walked out of it. Wolverine was a better movie than that shit.

$12.5 million. And the problem is, it's doing worse than the original; I'd be surprised if it matches the domestic gross of the first one.

You have awful taste and I hope you get hit by a bus.

That's usually only for movies completely driven by rabid fans like Watchmen though not summer blockbusters.
