I really hope that Puzzle Fighter has much less lag then Lumines online. I mean, it's Lumines , so who cares, but the few games I've played had really bad lag that would completely kill Puzzle Fighter, so hopefully they're conscious of it.

They must have fifty billion classic games lined up by now if they can just be all willy-nilly with the heavy releases. Sonic and GA seem way too random to be anything but replacements too.

Also I'd say Sonic took GW's place for best 400 pt game.

Well, seeing as how we have two games fall behind in the release schedule, I would say that is accurate.

Sonic is not on my happy list at this point. Beat the game, used no continues, and it didn't record my score at all.

Were you connected to Live at the time? I've never had a problem with that in any XBLA arcade game, except when I wasn't connected to live.

Anyway, just got the full 200 points. Thank God for the instant saves....every old game should have that feature!!! This is easily the best version of Sonic ever and I had a ton of fun getting all 200 points over about 5 hours of gameplay. Definitely worth $5.

Is Golden Axe worth it? :/

What the hell. I buy Golden Axe because I've never played the arcade version. 20 minutes later I've beaten the game. No fair, the Genesis version was much longer in length. Its only 5 bucks but even a fews beers last longer for that type of money.

:(

DamnitMatt-its a damn fun game if your into old school brawlers but yeesh that single player is seriously bare bones, they even give you unlimited lives.

Multi player is different though. Its online and offline cooperative play. Online you are given a limted number of lives and contines with two difficulty settings, normal and hardcore.

I'm a Sega whore so its worth the price plus I have friends that will want to play it coop since a few of us grew up on this game. It'll have good replay value for this area alone, but the single player is really short.

I don't think that is the case, not sure who did Sonic but I did see the dev listed for Golden Axe was Sega's own Secret Level.
Secret Level are (were? where did it go?) doing the new next-gen Golden Axe that we've only seen a CG trailer for. Sega Vintage is by Foundation 9 entertainment, which includes Digital Eclipse and Backbone. DE did Golden Axe, Backbone did Sonic, I think.

By the way, who didn't get all of the Golden Axe achievements in less than an hour? I remember it being harder than this!

shidoshi said:
Has anybody had any issues with your score properly recording to the leaderboards in Sonic?
Features rushed and broken in a Foundation 9 game, never ever ever ever to be patched? Unheard of!

But seriously, that sucks. Sonic is perfect for hot leaderboard action.

How does this happen with pretty much every arcade re-release? It's 2007, how can people not have learned what arcade gaming is about by now?

They're short, but they're not experience games you play through once to see a story or be wowed by awesome cutscenes. You re-play them to up your skills and compete for scores.

Then again, Golden Axe ****ing sucks, which is a more valid complaint. **** the skeletons.

Hopefully somebody at Sega gets the bright idea to put Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder on XBLA. Somehow I doubt it though which is a shame, it's a great game(unlike every other game in the series ugh ugh and ugh).

Also shame on the screwed up leaderboards in Sonic. I just played through the game via Genesis Collection a week or so ago, it would be amazing for score/time attacks.

Streets of Rage 2 with online co-op should be awesome. Granted I'm still partial to Bare Knuckle 3 but since that will never see an XBLA release I guess I can settle for close second.

But knowing Backbone/DE/random janitors they'll screw everything up and then some. =/

Is there a site that tracks XBLA sales (minus demo downloads of course)

There are some games I'm really curious about as to how well they did..

How smooth or choppy does Golden Axe multiplayer coop play online? Is it laggy or pretty smooth?

Sonic 2 is coming too! Wow! Sonic 1 was already awesome, and now Sonic 2 too? That's great. But will Sonic 2 include the Super Sonic cheat? I loved that.

Three days into my ownership of the Xbox 360, I learned to always be connected to live if I cared about my score being recorded. So, that isn't the issue. The game just seems to be really screwy about saving scores.

My best advice is to just keep a good save file and save at the beginning of each stage, especially before you get the last hit during the final fight with Robotnik (save anywhere is so awesome!). It HAS to record your score at some point!

Joystick hands-on with Marathon: Durandal.

Being the last day of E3, we were bound and determined to finally lay our greedy little hands on Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade. Having been turned away from Marathon's suite thrice yesterday, we were eager to finally get a hold of Bungie's seminal shooter (being developed for XBLA by Freeverse). Seeing as we only had a short time with the game, we decided to set off into multiplayer immediately. There were several maps to choose from, but "Giant Flaming Pit of Lava" caught our eye, so off we went.

Anyone familiar with Marathon will instantly be at home with the XBLA version. The game sports widescreen and higher resolution textures than the original game, though it's not likely to forcibly remove your socks. The action is fast-paced and frantic, even more so than DOOM, XBLA's other FPS. The Marathon engine supports a few more features than the DOOM engine, including the ability to look up and down and quick-look left and right. Many of the game's weapons also support alternate fire. For example, the assault rifle can also fire arcing grenades.

Those unfamiliar with the game will definitely be able to see the influence that Marathon had on the Halo series. Many of Halo's weapons and concepts are direct descendants of those found in Marathon. The fusion pistol, for example, is essentially the plasma pistol. The rocket launcher is nearly exactly the same as Halo's. There are shields, overshields, active camouflage, even the motion tracker is there. Not only that, even many of the maps are familiar. Thunderdome, for example, will be familiar to fans (and rocket campers) of Halo 2's Foundation.

The game is definitely showing its age, but it's also surprisingly entertaining. Multiplayer supports up to 8 players via system link or Xbox Live and 4 players via split-screen on a single box. The maps vary from wide open killing fields (Thunderdome) to narrow hallways perfect for ambushes (Ok, Come Get Some). Nailing an unsuspecting opponent with dual-wielded, double-barreled sawed-offs as he rounds a corner is very satisfying.

At the end of the day, Marathon serves as a surprisingly fun first person shooter on XBLA, and that's without even considering the campaign. There are sure to be some complaints about the dated graphics (perhaps valid ones at that), but for those who don't mind the "classic" styling -- or perhaps even appreciate it -- and for those looking to bone up on their Halo history, Marathon is worth a look.

Update: Fixed chronologically inaccurate weapon statement. We blame lack of sleep.

Right, XBLArcade/Tomacco's has a lengthy Question and Answer session up with Drew Card of Void Star about the newly revealed (it was in that XBLA montage) XBLA game Poker Smash.

I was rather meh at this game watching the E3 XBLA montage, but this actually made me interested in it. Poker, puzzles, chain combos? Could be fun.

I played though to level 8 or 9 twice now and had now issues. Take it for what it's worth lag free in two sessions.

The host is lag free and the other player has a delay between movement and attacks. Not too bad though. That being said I blindly bought GA because I had very fond memories of it, and it certainly hasn't aged well at all. Kinda regret getting it now :\

Sonic however is still 100% awesome.

I'm really glad Sega decided to skip the first Streets of Rage and go for the sequel right away. They are well aware of the superior game in the series. :D

And Bomberman next week!? HAWT

Cool preview. My brothers were big fans of the Marathon series back when it was new, but I never played it. I gave the original a shot on the (sacntioned) free PC version, but the controls were borked for some reason for me. I'll have to go back and try it again since this is the second in the series.

Yea, I recall going through the Marathons awhile back but for some reason Aleph One decided to get all rancid on me and I ended up uninstalling and junking the whole deal.

That's the version, I couldn't remember it. The mouse look had zero sensitivity, so the smallest movement to the left or right was a 90 degree turn, and the options didn't fix it. Still got through the first level, somehow. :lol

I don't remember the controls being that bad, I think I got through about half of Marathon 1 before the crashing happened.

I think it was some kind of glitch on my system; I did some digging around and no one else had the same issue.

Wow, I'm really interested now. I think this, Marathon and War World will be my next purchases. I better get a points card or something.
For those two games, you're not in a rush. If you ask for a points card for christmas, that'll probably be perfect timing.

Yeah, the guy at Hudson confirms they're working on a few other titles, too. Omega 5 (never heard of it) being one of them.

Does anyone know what happened to Street Race? It was announced at X06 last year, and looked like TrickStyle.

Yeah, Gaia has held two or three community events for it. I've attended two, both in 2006 and recently this year, as well, and the game has been solid both times, but apparently it needed tweaking after they gave it to certification a while back, and now they've given it off again and it's just waiting to be released. If you want to see my impressions of the game (shameless plug!), you can check them here:

http://news.mygamercard.net/2007/01/20/preview-street-trace-nyc/

I'll ask them tomorrow what the current status is on the release, but don't worry, it's coming and it's a good multiplayer experience.

Just bought a 360. I've had my Wii since launch and enjoyed it. But needed something more meaty.. For lack of a better word. I really enjoy the fact that 360 has arcade games, as opposed to console ports of arcade games such as on the Wii. Last weekend was the first time I'd got my hands on a 360 with a bunch of friends. I was instantly sold.

Anyway. Is there anything on xblah that I should have my eye on? I already have a number of xblah games on my list to buy (Double Dragon, SF2 Turbo, Geometry Wars, Smash TV). But is there anything else that I might not know about that I should at least consider?

SH5 announcement sell ya? Seems like IIRC you were holding out for that or maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

Oh yea, my 1 suggestion for an XBLA title would be SOTN.

Prince of Persia Classic should be at the top of your list.
