MPlayerX works with anything I throw at it if you're looking for a lightweight player similar to Quicktime. It's in the Mac App Store.

Some first impressions on my 2012 Macbook Air:

First, it looks as beautiful as ever. Though they did change the color of my side dock from black to the same color as the iOS dock, which I don't like there either.

It also seems slightly slower than Mountain Lion. The boot time and wake up feels a second or two longer, and apps like Firefox take a little bit longer to open as well. It's nothing huge, but it is noticeable. Might try doing a clean install in a week or two when I'm less swamped with school work, see if that speeds it up.

The battery life improvements are very noticeable though. Got through an hour and a half class starting with 19% battery, which is outstanding.

I also couldn't care less about the new apps. Why do I need Maps on my laptop? I'll never open any of them.

Overall I'm not crazy about it, but it's not awful either. Some good, some bad.

Is there any way to disable the Bookmarks/Reading List thing on the Top Sites view?

It's probably nice for most people but I have probably 500 links in my toolbar in specifically organized folders so I'll probably never use this feature.

The new Top Sites view is nice though.

For fucks sake. They still haven't fixed that fucking bug where it shows a 12h clock in the lock screen even if the system is set to 24h. I swear this bug has literally been there since
Lion (!) and they still haven't fixed it. I even reported it once but the ticket got closed as a duplicate with no way of seeing the original one. Am I missing something here?

MPlayerX stopped publishing to the Mac App Store because of the restrictions imposed on applications submitted to it. Just download from the website, then drag and drop into /Applications.

How is this running on older hardware? I have an iMac that just qualifies but after the iOS debacle on the iPhone 4, I'm a bit weary of what Apple finds acceptable at the low end. Is it worth upgrading?

I just installed it on a 2010 Macbook Air, which felt pretty crappy on ML, and it feels like a new machine. Boots faster, Safari runs better and overall it just feels nice. iPhoto still runs like shit but dat 1.4 Core 2 Duo is show it's age (hell it sucks when I bought the thing). Gonna visit my folks and install it on their 2007 iMac and see how she runs.

Oh, and I'm not experiencing apps crashing non-stop on this machine like on my 2012 Mac Mini which is a plus.

Not sure if posted yet, but the free iWork 09 trial counts as a valid upgrade path for the new iWork apps on the Mac App Store.

So it's a nice way to get Pages, Numbers, Keynote completely free.

Hey thanks - how do you get them free after installing?

After you install iWork 09 / trial, just go to the Updates tab in Mac App Store (on Mavericks) and you just press the Update button next to each. It then gets associated with your AppleID so you can re-install later or install on other Macs with one click.

Installed it on a late 2008 Macbook (2.0Ghz C2D, 8GB) and it runs fine. Runs about the same as ML did.

How long does it typically take to re index / optimize this thing? Its eating my RAM like crazy since I installed it 5-6 hours ago.

Getting pretty good battery life however.

Already have Pages but tried this for Numbers and Keynote, doesn't work for me. No updates available.

Try again later. I didn't get the update when I first installed but got it after an hour or two.
Where'd you download the trial from? Although it probably doesn't matter what the source is I guess.

Edit: Oh there we go, it's showing now haha.

How about getting the newer version of iPhoto? I am still stuck on the one that came with my early 2009 iMac.

Apple and Sony in cahoots on clock conspiracy.

Update went through nice and smooth. I've been using Snow Leopard for the past three years so it's cool that Apple released this for free.

Just finished my reformat and reinstall. Just as I suspected, if you're on the GM, you can use the Recovery partition to reinstall to the full version. The only caveat is that you must have purchased Mavericks through the store. (i.e. the app needs to be attached to your account) Either via the same machine, or another Mac, and purchase it. Even if you cancel the download. (You could even use a friends machine and log into their App Store as yourself and purchase it, but make sure to have them log back in as themselves right after you're done so they're not suddenly buying stuff with your account. I have done this and it does work.)

Anyway. The Build number is indeed the newer one.

Tried to upgrade on my iMac. Left the room, came back and found an error message saying it wouldn't install because the drive is damaged. Tried to reboot the machine and it wouldn't mount the drive to login. Went into Recovery and couldn't unencrypted and mount the drive. Couldn't do any First Aid on the drive. And, the drive was retitled "Virtual Hard Drive" or something (it's one of the hybrid drives) and the Bootcamp partition is now busted as well.

Genius Bar appointment in the morning. I hope Time Machine backup is working and proper...

GGGGGRRRR. QuickTime Player + Perian is my viewing method of choice, so that's going to suck.

The install went super smooth for me! I love how the OS is so smooth now on a retina display versus what it was like on Mountain Lion. I like the changes they made, like Calendars, but would like to see a wide implementation of the cleaner design(I know they were on time constraints). The scrolling does feel overall slower and for some reason launchpad has this weird no snap scroll, but maybe that is intentional now.

Performance with scrolling on my retina macbook pro has definitely improved with this update.

It's not perfect on particularly heavy sites, but it is noticeably better than what it was before the update.

Quoted for infinite truth.

QuickTime is only useful for playing back home videos you have recorded on your iOS devices.

For everything else, VLC. I cannot even recall the last time I opened the QuickTime player.

probably from some random porn video that didnt open in VLC. At least for me that was when...

Digging the addition of the maps feature to be honest. for a person who rides the bus a lot it sure is nice.

I much prefer MplayerX to VLC, just feels more lightweight and has actually played some files I've encountered issues with in VLC.

If anything, Safari is running much smoother for me over here. But I did do a clean install for Mavericks (i.e. download, upgrade, boot to recovery mode, erase HDD partition, reinstall from scratch).

Maturity, bitches.
Lack of 2D dock at the bottom that can then be customised by making the files transparent is kind of bumming me out. That's like one of the few things I want to keep when I upgrade. :(

I thought audio-only FaceTime calls were going to be added to Mavericks. Have they not been implemented yet, or was I mistaken?

Worked for me and this should make my mom happy. Thanks for the tip.

I think something's broken.

Shared Links in Safari refuses to work. Deleted my Facebook link in SysPref, closed Safari and re-opened it, no go. Closed Safari, deleted it again, deleted the Facebook link on my iPhone, removed the frozen state of Safari on my iPhone.

Now NEITHER OF THEM have Shared Links. What have I done wrong?

Edit: Also, Maps refuses to draw the Standard view map data, only Satellite view.

Edit 2: HURR DURR, apparently this doesn't work with Facebook yet. Lame.

Swapped to Safari as it pretty much supports all the Chrome extensions I had.

Pretty snappy and my Mac is much cooler. Safari still comes up under "Apps using significant energy" though. Is that normal?

Only issue I've run across so far is that I cannot turn on the screensaver using the hot corners. Tried turning them off/on, tried all 4 corners, still no luck.

iMac with trackpad. Otherwise, no other issues for the moment.
