OS X Mavericks |OT| ... it's not called Liger :(

Anyone having trouble with scrolling in Chrome? I'm not sure it's a Mavericks issue, as it was only today that it started to not work, but now I cannot two-finger scroll using my Trackpad (iMac) in the Chrome browser. It works in every other instance, and I can use the up/down arrows and page up/down.

Don't know about that, but yesterday I couldnt swipe-to-go-back in Safari. It would start to move the page, then freeze. I could type sites in the address bar, and it would show loading, but the static image of the page I tried to "swipe away" would still be there. Closing the window fixed it, but would happen every time I would swipe.

Used the demo version of CleanMyMac 2 and noticed that the language adds on Dictionary takes a lot of space. How safe is it to remove those language packages?

Is there a way to hide application icons in Launchpad?
Unfortunately the only ways are to...

A) Put them all in a folder in LP out of the way or on another page you never go to like iOS

B) Move the applications out of the actual Applications folder into another folder (I do this for certain apps. I put them in a folder in my Home called Apps. Because if you name it Applications, it still puts it in LP.)

C) Be an Apple developer and have access to the blacklist LP uses to hide certain apps like how the new iLive and iWork suites will show up in LP but the old versions will be excluded. (Not sure how LP does this. It might be hard coded.)

Pick one. Remember, B only works with apps that aren't picky about their location. Like apps from the App Store or ones that need to be installed.

I agree though that Apple needs to provide real ways on iOS and OS X to let us hide apps from that list. Until then, these are our workarounds. I also wish they'd add pages to OS X LP folders like on iOS. But don't even dare make our folders on OS X only hold 9 items per page to compromise. Thanks, Apple. Get right on that for 10.10. (Or 10.9.1?)

This is only a guess but I'd say since they're self contained packages, you should be able to delete them individually with no problem. I can't guarantee OS X won't redownload them or have a fit. So do a test. Take them out and put them in a folder somewhere or in a ZIP and run the computer normally for a while. If you run into a problem, put them back. I can't see OS X being completely balanced on them existing since they're really optional. But don't fully delete them until you make sure nothing is wrong.

I've had this happen in Chrome, Firefox, and even Safari. Chrome seems to make everything grind to a halt. Opera seems to be the best behaved browser for me currently; although Chrome Canary seems good too, aside from slightly jumpy scrolling. (Previously, I'd been using Chrome on 10.6.)

What's the GAF consensus? Should I upgrade from 10.8 on my year old Macbook Pro? Better battery life? My gf's 2009 white Macbook running 10.6.8?

i wouldn't, i've had nothing but issues (2012 air - for whatever reason it seems air owners have the most problems). saying that, mavericks seems to be fine for about 90% of people.

Firefox is running like crap in Mavericks. Keeps randomly freezing or slowing down for me. Trying switching to Safari for a while..

I have a 13" MBP 2009 which was so slow and unresponsive. I upgraded from 4GB to 8GB last year to improve speeds from Mountain Lion but it really did not improve that much. I was determined to upgrade: get a fully powered new retina MacBook 15". After finally backing up all my files I decided to clean install Mavericks just to test. This is the first time I ever clean install a Mac. I'am now seriously doubting getting another MBP. My 2009 MBP feels like brand new! After discussion with my wife we believe we can survive another year. Instead we upgraded our iPad 3 to the Air! Saved a lot of cash!

I actually had a similar experience with my 2011 Macbook Air. It only had 2GB of RAM and seriously struggled with Mountain Lion. The night before I bought the new MBPr I installed Mavericks on the Air and it ran so much better (which is bloody annoying when you are set on upgrading). Of course the next day I said fuck it and bought the MBPr anyway.

The only thing I dislike from my MBP is the screen but the responsiveness of Mavricks is so good and heck the LAN input sure the comes in handy for troubleshooting router connections...

Yeah. All I can say is the Retina screen on a laptop is fantastic. The screen on my Air (which is a pretty decent resolution) looks downright gnarly now.

I just upgraded to Mavericks yesterday and I'm not sure what to think of it. A lot of things like Safari or Spotify feel a lot faster and snappier. Yet my video rendering times seem to have taken a nosedive. Something that took around 15 minutes to render with ML now take upwards of 30 minutes. :/

I guess I'll survive with my iPad Air for the retina goodness!

But I surely love how responsive my old MBP feels with Mavericks! It's magical! Thanks Apple!

Is there any way to disable an external display in mavericks in software? i'm talking about a display thats connected via hdmi

Hey guys, I just got a new rMBP. Should I install Mavericks on the new mac before I transfer all the files over, or will the time machine backup automatically do that for me? Would it be better if I install it beforehand or what?

On my MacBook Air I just installed the update and the laptop was in exactly the same state as before, open windows and all.

I would think it might be best to restore files first to ensure the backup worked.

I did the Mountain Lion updates on the new mac. So just do a time machine backup on my old mac and restore it on the new without installing Mavericks on it first? I'm just trying to see if it will make any difference.

I just got an update for the trackpad. My MBP froze the other day, too, after some weird responsive issues. It was weird, so I hope it's fixed.

I'm really sad that it's 2013 and we still can't put the Computer folder in the Dock...

I'd remove all my disks from my desktop and have Hazel keep it clean if we could do that. I'd love a spring-out Computer Disk list in my Dock.

I just use the devices menu in each folder. You could put all your stuff in each drive inside a root type folder and then put that folder on your dock. You decoupled even create an alias folder with a collection of aliases and put that on your dock.

Aliases look like shit with those little arrows laughing at you like "here we are and you can't get rid of us!" and it's not the same if I can't have a computer icon with a dynamically changing list of mounted disks. That's all I want. Would be awesome.

Two Trackpad-related issues so far. First, occasionally when I try to scroll within an inactive window on the other display, it doesn't work on the first try. Second, when I restarted today, clicking did not work at all. Had to restart again.

Terminal: "open /Volumes"
Drag that folder to the Dock.

Upgraded on my 2008 Mac Pro. Figured the Safari improvements would probably make it worth it, and since no other major issues or capability with my software has popped up yet.

I have to ask Apple, though: was the energy drain caused by the Time Machine backup menu bar icon really worth making it less useful for the majority of customers?

Well that kills the upgrade for me.

I just thought that it not animating properly was a bug...
The icon is actually different when it's syncing so I assumed it was intentional. Odd they haven't fixed it with the other early breaks though--that would have been something that showed up before the GM.

It's odd for sure, but odder for me is removing any sign that email is downloading or checking in Mountain Lion. I thought THAT was a big, but it's still like this in mavericks.

Also, what's up with dragging a mounted volume to the trash and it STILL saying "trash" and not "eject"?

Well that kills the upgrade for me.

Interesting. On mountain lion, syncing my iPhone took under a minute. Syncing. The aperture library database for my photo sync was useable. Now that processing time is closer to 5 minutes. It's excruciating to sync my phone now.

So I downloaded and installed Steam but it won't let me launch the program because it's from an unidentified developer. Anyone know how to get around this?

What Ninja said above, and also you can disable "Gate keeper" in Preferences under Security. Should be in the first tab.

You're not supposed to be looking in /Library - maybe ~/Library (that's where mine are anyway).

That is, /Users/_youruser_/Library/.....

Also, by default your user ~/Library will be hidden in Mavericks. To unhide it, open a finder window to your user folder, right click -> show view options -> check box to "Show Library Folder".
