A lot of people would agree on Inherent Vice and Boyhood to be fair but Jesus Christ at those comments on Selma and American Sniper.

It's one voter. How many active voters are there in the Academy? At what point can we say that one person's viewpoint is representative of the group?

This is no different than saying GAF is a hivemind IMO.

Just because one person says something it doesn't lend credit to the idea of the group thinking the same thing.

Did I say anything in the OP about her representing the entirety of the Academy? I even responded to your "I get the feeling..." post by saying "Not at all".

We're going to disagree on Selma being snubbed, so you might as well stop there. Regardless, like I said, we'll be hearing from one voter per day, so we'll see more as the week goes on.

There's over 6000 voters:

Of course, there's also these stats though:

American Sniper as "true" art and The Imitation Game as a movie that people will be talking about in a year

lol, k
She's voting for Imitation Game specifically because it's Oscar Bait instead of voting for Birdman, which seems to be her favorite movie of the nominees. It's kinda silly.

When the voting habits of said group over the last several decades largely match up with a lot of this one voter's tastes?

She doesn't single-handedly represent the Academy but it's not like a lot of her opinions are an outlier among Academy voters either.

Is this the first of these voter opinions or are there more?

Because seriously, that voter's opinions on Selma and "lots of abstaining from voting because they have no fucking clue what sound editing is or they haven't seen any/enough foreign films, animated shorts, documentary shorts, or live action shorts," are rageworthy.

I'd rather have someone abstain in voting for a category they can't fully appreciate, then just vote for a random option.

Is "Interstellar" not nominated for an Oscar?

Not entirely sure but I'd bet it got sound and visual effects nominations.

The Selma talk here is the only thing that really bothers me. It was a good movie, and if there's no art influence or whatever it shouldn't bring it down that much. I enjoy the Oscars but their choices are often confusing.

I've seen worse opinions in GAF voting threads. Nothing seems outrageous here.

I don't agree with the person, but it's not like anything they're saying is an outlandish or baseless opinion. Semla stuff comes off as a bit... rough, to say the least, though.

I liked Selma and don't necessarily disagree with "there's no art to it" remark, but it's an especially weird thing to say when she simultaneously praises The Imitation Game and American Sniper -- two films that are markedly lacking in any kind of art.

That voter really thinks people will be talking about The Imitation Game years from now?
The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything are both very forgettable films. Neither deserved a BP nod.

They're fine, but given that they're based on two truly extraordinary individuals, I found both underwhelming.

I give a slight nod to The Imitation Game, since it at least showed some interest in Turing's work. The Theory of Everything couldn't have possibly cared less about Hawking's work.

True that she didn't have uniformly horrible opinions (I'll edit OP), but she didn't even finish Inherent Vice before forming an opinion on it.

I had the same experience with the master. didn't hate this guys opinion, I think I'll give that one a skip.

You can draw a similar conclusion from the last 80+ years of Best Picture winners too.

Why stop there? Every winner of every award in every major awards show on the planet doesn't deserve it. Everyone and everything is overrated. Except all that stuff that didn't win, that stuff is classic.

I think there's an interesting undercurrent running through this thread with people being offended at the Selma comments while themself admitting they haven't seen the movie.

I enjoyed all three movies mentioned but I agree with the art thing. I'm sure an argument can be made for some of those films having a strong art element but I didn't really enjoy them for that reason.

This may be true, but you don't have to see Selma to find her "wearing I Can't Breathe Shirts offended me" comment distasteful.

It's a gimmick and the acting suffered as a result.

People who think it's a gimmick are missing the point. It's what the story is about. It's as much a gimmick as any storytelling decision is to any movie.

The kid was fine. It's not meant to be an acting showcase anyway (unless Linklater was able to luck out and accidentally cast the next teenage Marlon Brando). I think Hawke was actually the standout, Arquette was really good too but I find some of the hype around her performance a little overblown.

But I also acknowledge it's a very your-mileage-may-vary movie and whether or not it lands with you hinges a lot on your own childhood and experiences growing up. It resonated hard for me but it can easily not for someone else just by virtue of living different lives.

Why stop there?

Because, for some reason, I feel like bringing up past Best Picture winners is actually kind of relevant to discussing Academy voter habits and tastes. But I don't know, that's just me.

How do you come to the conclusion that you should vote for the movie people will be talking about years from now....and then conclude that that movie is The Imitatiom Game? The mind fucking boggles.

Can someone tell me why this is relevant?

Not trying to threadshit, I honestly want to know.

Art criticism is both very important (culturally) and very intellectually satisfying (as spectators/artists/individuals). I don't follow the Oscars but i have to imagine that those who do have an interest in knowing what hides behind the largely unreadable intentions of each person who votes for who wins and who doesn't. As much as the Oscars can behave predictably, i feel like people are often searching for that fleeting true depth of criticism that would betray how superficial they feel the Oscars to be.

nobody will be talking about imatiation game years from now

unless it is to talk about that no one is talking about it....in that case I guess it is a self-fulfilling prophecy

Fascinating insight into the thought process. But this part.

I was happy to have the chance to vote for Guardians of the Galaxy. It could have and should have been nominated for best picture; I nominated it. MY VOTE: Guardians of the Galaxy

Is lolosome. Best Picture nom for GoTG?!

Agree but it's such an oscar bait film and the Academy just can't resist them.

Only thing wrong with the Boyhood comment was the Patricia Arquette bashing. Movie is fun to watch, but has a shit cliche story.

I think Imitation Game is a little more relevant than people give it credit for. The ideas of encryption and code breaking are becoming increasingly significant in society and the story is sort of a precursor to today's internet hacking.

This right here should make some of GAF to have an aneurism.
And I agree to it, GotG was the most fun movie I watched last year, there is no shame in recognizing fun.

I don't think people are going to have an aneurysm at the idea Guardians should be recognized for being a very fun movie, but I'm not sure "Best Picture" is an appropriate way to recognize that.

it's not even the best Marvel movie released this year, much less in the running for the Best Picture.

I agree abstaining from voting is much better than randomly deciding what to vote for. I've seen far worse ballots, this one seems more or less reasonable, apart from praising Sniper.
