Oscar Voter reveals horrible opinions: "No Art to Selma" 'Boyhood' "Uneven" "Crap"

Art criticism is both very important (culturally) and very intellectually satisfying (as spectators/artists/individuals). I don't follow the Oscars but i have to imagine that those who do have an interest in knowing what hides behind the largely unreadable intentions of each person who votes for who wins and who doesn't. As much as the Oscars can behave predictably, i feel like people are often searching for that fleeting true depth of criticism that would betray how superficial they feel the Oscars to be.
I guess that's the source of my confusion. By and large, GAF as a community seems to dismiss the relevancy of the Academy as it pertains to the artistic merit of the films they nominate, which leaves me scratching my head when people get upset about their choices. So you think people are hoping to be proven wrong?

The only really horrible opinion is the stuff about the Selma actors wearing the "I can't breath shirts" The other stuff is just... ehh, opinions.

^All award shows are rubbish unless our favorite projects win.

Yeah but it wasn't animated.
Oh jesus if it got disqualified for being an animated film due to like 15 minutes of live action that's a fucking joke and everyone of those outdated farts needs to die off already. Especially when the animation of the rest of the film was so great

Perhaps not so much in the sense that they want to be proven wrong, but that they want something more tangible and objective to sustain their already held opinions. Even if you're just saying, for example "everyone knows the oscars are done by old people who don't know shit", it sounds much more sustainable (and comfortable to say) in the context of a voter being open with her criticism than in a thread where none of their favorite movies win without any real explanation as to why that happened. I think it's more a case of people aching for justification for their biases, or for a place where they can expose them without feeling like they're too unsubstantiated.

The Academy is really silly. They also disqualified Birdman and Whiplash for best score since they used classical music in it.

This year was the year of the blockbuster. From Guardians of the Galaxy to Planet of the apes, the big-budget films were not only far more enjoyable, but seemsed to present a lot of genuine depth compared to the obvious oscar bait.

That being said, The Grand Budapest Hotel is pretty awesome.

Is saying Selma has no art the equivalent of saying it has no soul, a descriptor people tend to pull out of their asses when talking about films. The cast making a statement at a New York premier is 100% not an issue, and in a lot of ways makes sense. STFU lady.

Whatever though, Selma is solid and The Imitation Game ain't shit.

Boyhood's biggest flaw is the horrible dialogue; you are just cringing all the time because someone actually approved the script with that dialogue.

Is this person's argument for American Sniper being their choice for winner that the movie made huge bank while operating on a mid-tier budget? WTF?

Isn't that a stone's throw from arguing (insert movie) deserves the Oscar because it was the highest grossing or most profitable film of the year?

I agree with her on Boyhood and Selma. Boyhood was a huge let down for me, I can see how it appeals to people, but I found a lot of the writing and child acting to be cringe inducing. The weird cultural throw ins such as Lady Gaga's Telephone music video felt weird to me as well.

Selma is well crafted, but it did nothing for me. It certainly is art, but I didn't feel like Selma was anything special. Don't agree with her comments on the director's race, though.

Selma is a well-crafted movie, but there's no art to it.

The concept of "art" should be abolished.

I'm not sure why I should care for awards given by 60+ year old people. It's all politics, anyway.

"Politics" meaning "politics getting in the way of my politics" in some cases lol.

Why do people want videogames to have an Oscars again?

If [Selma] had been directed by a 60-year-old white male, I don't think that people would have been carrying on about it to the level that they were.
Jesus Christ, could you be any more disrespectful and shitty?

Ava DuVernay has more talent in her little finger than this woman will ever have.

As long as no biopic win I am happy :) You can't root for anything in the oscars, you can only hope for damage control.

I've been more offended by comments I've seen from academy voters regarding the animation category.

These are just one person's opinions, and at least they watched all the nominees (or at least watched what they voted for).

Well damn those American Sniper and Selma comments are off the wall.

American Sniper should win because of how it banked but nothing about how its just your standard "RAH RAH 'MURICA' film?

Why hasn't the title of the thread been changed to something like "I don't agree with someone else's opinion!" yet?
I think when you seriously imply a director's film is only receiving positive attention because she's a black woman, you have a shitty opinion that should be mocked.

I will be watching wrestling the night of the Oscars (fuck you). I don't even know if anyone seriously still watches the Oscars except the occasional boring yuppie that probably also writes yelp reviews and complains about having to tip.

That person also wanted Guardians of the Galaxy so yea they probably care about pop culture.

American Sniper making $300+million is just crazy and not at all common, especially with just a $23 million production . Hell, American Sniper's box office success is a better story than half of the nominees

But it's helpful as it does clue you into the general mindset. It does seem like after 12yrs won last year. The academy felt they could pat themselves on the back, some Oscar voters rather grudgingly.

If anything it shows that the marches and T shirts and the I can't breath stuff hit the mark. Some voters obviously got their sensitive selves ruffled.

I generally liked Boyhood, but some of the dialogue was really shockingly bad. The scene where the boys are talking about
fucking hookers
was terrible.

GungHo

Single-handedly caused Exxon-Mobil to sue FOX, start World War 3
When the heck did long running sitcoms become the go-to comparison for Boyhood
They're making a poor comparison to sitcoms because, to quote someone else, we also saw Steve Urklel grow up. Personally, I'd have picked a stronger example... like Bud from the Cosby Show growing up to be Dule Hill.

Oh, is THIS why there's such a pronounced backlash against the movie here?

I wonder if the majority of the outcry regarding the film's "overrated" status began sometime after January 12th, 2015.
RLM is popular but nor everybody follows their opinion like gospel. I love them to death but disagree heavily on plenty of situations. Having said that yes one cannot deny that their deconstruction of the sw prequels really hurt the films

If you thought that scene was bad dialogue.... you're giving our youth far too much credit.

Same with all the whining about the Facebook stuff.

The only dialogue I really had a problem with was the stuff towards the end, which got very on-the-nose about reminding us of the film's themes, the passage of time, etc., most of which was given to the adults.

I didn't say they did. Not everyone even checks their channel out, much less takes it into consideration at all.

But I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few people here on GAF who basically got themselves some easy internet fighty talking points from their review.

This person has an enjoyable take on how she votes. I love getting a glimpse into SOMEONE'S process of being an Oscar voter, even if I don't always agree with it.

What do you mean?

(BTW, I don't like love these guys - or anyone who complains about sequels/franchises, for that matter.)

They thought the movie was boring and that it really sucked in their initial review. Then in this one they start off with saying they're going to "get in line" with the other critics. It reeks of a weird insecurity people get when the loudest voices champion a film that they think is boring and terrible.

No worries though, I get what they're doing and it was funny enough. It just felt like they were trying a little too hard.

I actually think getting "snubbed" is a sign a film, album or whatever is actually where the art is at. These award shows aren't about art or quality - they're about self congratulation.

Eh the two jokes I made were straight from them. But at the end of the day I agree with them when you put jokes aside.
