I can see how the core gameplay could be a subjective issue (though personally I only liked close-quarters combat, and even then found it very simplistic) but how would you say the whole authorizing system or the final boss fight issues are purely subjective?

I could say that those features being considered poorly-designed or mechanically-insufficient is subjective when there's absolutely no evidence whatsoever for them being objectively so, other than the internet stamping its feet and singing in chorus "BECAUSE I SAID SO".

Yeah, I liked it. Hyperbole like in that pic above really helped the game, at least for me. I didn't play it right away, so I've read all this hate towards Other M and hence I was pleasantly surprised how decent the game is when I've actually played it.

The only outright bad thing are these pixel hunts, but funnily that's one of the things I rarely read complaints about (at least until now). The story gets so much shit, yet only at the very beginning and end you encounter any lenghty cutscenes.

Retro did such a good job translating the "feel" of Metroid into 3D (bar Samus' shitty friends in Prime 3), then Other M just shits on all of it. Shits on the story, shits on the character of Samus, shits on the usually tight controls, shits on the great sci-fi soundtrack.

I agree that the lack of new abilities is disappointing, but didn't Metroid Prime "Recycle" the vast majority of it's weapons and abilities too? The Boost Ball is the only new useful ability I can think of, which was basically a substitute for the Speed Booster.

The rest were the Missile Combos, which were all completely useless with the exception of the Super Missile and one instance where the Wave Buster is handy, but not necessary.

Also I thought the SpeedBooster and Screw Attack being used properly in a 3D Metroid game was a nice substitute for new abilities.

I personally really enjoyed Other M. Although I can see the game's flaws, I feel that they don't really impact the experience much. I feel that something like a Metroid game should have a good story to keep players interested, and Other M certainly did that. In fact, it's quite possibly my favourite Metroid game ever, and I would love to see more games in the same vein.

Not my favorite, but it was pretty fun. People just love to complain about it and they exaggerate so much.

Agreed, who wouldn't want to fight Iceman, Forge and Mystique? Those fights were among my favorites in the series for flavor alone.

Seeker Missiles, Grapple Lasso and associated upgrades, actually using your ship in puzzles and combat, many new beams, a lot of items like the visors and Spider Ball weren't strictly new but with the added dimension were completely unique in use.

Pretty sure some of those Other M shots are directly from 2010 press kits (namely the action-y ones), so I guess Nintendo was trying to sabotage their own game? It's by no means an ugly game but its environments were a definite step down from Retro's art team.

I hated the other hunters in MP3 though. Felt way out of place, but I guess nothing on the level of MOM's plot. Also having Dark Samus have to possess them seemed to diminish her threat as a villain, whereas in MP2 I felt she worked better.

You're including weapons and abilities from the entire trilogy. I was just talking about Prime 1.
Oh and I'll admit that I completely forgot about the visors so my point doesn't quite stand anyway....

I find most gameplay mechanics and most of the controls to be really good. Brilliant even. They got 2D Metroid translated to 3D, really similar to how Super Mario 3D Land did the same thing with Mario.

Those mechanics deserve a better game built around it, though. The story and Samus characterization are the least of its problems. I'd take a sequel to Other M with better level design, power-ups, exploration and also better music. Then we'd have a great game, regardless of the story elements.

I do agree that the game, for all its faults, is undeservedly shit upon on the Internet. It did many things well and it's a fun action game that was innovative in its gameplay. People are so absorved by this supposed idea of how "Samus was ruined" and it warps the entire experience. I don't give a damn to what they did to that character, who was barely a character before anyway. And Metroid is my favorite series in gaming.

It is an incredibly bland-looking game by any reasonable metric, both in terms of the art that went into the environments and how they're actually rendered, to say nothing of the blah bestiary. What's worse is that they already did an artificial environment theme in Fusion, so they're also retreading ground that's already been covered.

There's a difference between adding new stuff that is questionably useful, and adding nothing new at all. Prime 1, which was the most traditional as far as Metroid equipment goes, still added the boost ball, the charge combos and the thermal and x-ray visors. What did Other M add?

Yes, they do. But that's not the point. I'm simply highlighting the futility of the crusade to besmirch Other M, a crusade folks seemingly dedicate a lot of time and energy to, ultimately wasted, since many have enjoyed and will enjoy the game. It's a common internet trait to assume that people are unable to think and decide for themselves, and enjoy the torch-waving/pitchfork wielding a little too much. If some examples of the game being quantifiably broken from a design/control/programming perspective were offered, I'd be happy to listen.

Unless of course the above poster's aim is solely to create a recruitment poster for spurned internet whiners to his/her cause, in which case I wish them every success.

Easily the worst Metroid game ever created, a chore to play through and something I wish had never happened. It did deserve better, a better development team, story, artist, etc.
