Square Enix supplies over 3 millions. Dragon Quest VIII out

29.11.04 - Square Enix communicates that since the introduction on the market by Dragon Quest VIII to 27.11.04 over 3 million units of the RPGs in Japan were delivered.

And i wonder how many controllers were sold?

As mentioned by others, it's very cute, but totally impossible to use.

Yeah, I don't get why DQVIII is selling for the equivelant of $80???

Oh that's easy, the answer is "because they can". What I meant is that if you divide the sales in Yen of DQVIII over the sales in units, you get some close to 17,000 Yen, while the game with tax is only around 9,000 Yen.

Isn't the reason for so many of these disparities (both Japanese and European prices), the fact that the dollar is at it's absolute weakest levels vs both the yen and the euro?

Are are they really significantly different prices that historical big new releases?

The MSRP on DQVIII was about 2000 yen higher than the typical game now, so it's not just the yen to dollar rates that suggest the price of the game is high. And like Miburou said, it's because they can. Which is why I am surprised that games like GTA:SA and Halo 2 don't see $59.99+ release prices at US release.

DQVII was only 6,800 Yen I believe, while DQVIII is 8,800 Yen. That's a big jump in price.

On the other hand DQVII was released 08/26/00, when the PS2 had already been out for 6 months and the PSOne market was dominated by it's back catalog and budget releases. A significantly different time in the hardware cycle.

I don't think that's the reason. Square released FFVII for as low as 5,800 Yen IIRC, then FFVIII was 6,800 followed by FFIX at 7,800. Then came the big shock with FFX selling at 8,800 Yen. At least with FF the excuse was the high production costs.

After playing DQVIII I can say the same for it, as it looks like it has a much higher production value than VII. I mean it's no FFX with the insane CG and all the voice acting and what not but still a big jump from VII,

Your memory's a little rusty. FFVII was 6800, FFVIII and IX were 7800, DQVII was also 7800, FFX at 8800, FFX-2 went down to 6800. The SNES FFs went for way more, thanks to the bubble, and cart prices. FFVI was 11400 yen pre tax.

Actually, it's less an issue of my memory being rusty (since I was neither on the web nor in Japan when those PS1 FF games came out), than simply have gotten some incorrect info. Anyway, thanks for the correction.

I guess the increase in price of the FF and DQ games isn't as steep as I thought, but still MGS2 had production costs that were probably several times those of MGS1, yet still retailed at the same price.

BTW, DQ7 didn't ship 3M in the first 3 days, or did it? I'm just wondering whether DQ8 can better DQ7's sales. In any case, the game beaome the PS2's best seller in Japan in only 3 days.
