To me that seems like they just aren't invested in balancing the characters after a certain point, which fucking sucks if that's the case.

Blizzard balancing games

Retiring heroes sounds stupid. People can't get all trophies/achievements if they did that as well. Hope they give them a vacation instead.

Seems like Kaplan's "but it's FREE!!" line will be the go-to answer to anything controversial.

*summer games shit*

WE JUST GAVE YOU ANA MANG

I really can't see them retiring characters though, people would go ballistic if their main was just taken out of the game.

Yeah. Don't rework your characters abilities... just remove them 👌

Hmmm...

Like i said, they might just let qp be the wild west, it already is when it comes to stacking so balancing there means shit. So i figure qp all heroes are open, comp is where the "not retired" heroes go

I don't see them ever going ahead with something like this tbh.
The way he says it all speaks volumes. I mean just so casually drops "oh our business model, the fact that we offer everything free, etc" ignoring that people have dropped real money for boxes for skins for the characters they want to play. Even beyond that his comment means people on staff have considered it too, namely those balancing the game. Like why would you have even said that.

Not only would the go ballistic, but even other mains would go ballistic.

Let's say Reaper gets retired. All of a sudden, tanks are running rampant. Genji will be worthless cause he stinks against tanks. So would Lucio as he just doesn't heal enough for them and Mercy and Ana will be the best options.

It's never happening. The amount of shit they would get if they retired heroes insane.

That's assuming there's no other tank killers by the time that hypothetical Reaper retirement happens.

The most that would ever happen is something like 'Bastion really doesn't work in this game we'll take him out, work on him and then put him back'

When he comes back he's still Bastion just a completely reworked kit. I don't think you'll ever have to say goodbye to your main.

Well yeah, of course, but I'm just using an example with what we have and how much of an impact retiring a hero can make.

Of course, though I don't believe that they would do it with characters that have such a specific and unique role.

If we were talking about characters who share roles with other ones already present in the game, though, that'd be different. Widowmaker and Hanzo for instance share very similar roles and play reasonably similar. If Widowmaker got removed, Hanzo would become the go-to sniper, and vice versa.

And aside from, as Vault Dweller mentions, temporary removals to rework hero kits, the "does the same thing" situation is the only reason I can see them taking out a hero. This is especially true if there's a power creep for newer heroes, where older heroes simply get outclassed by the newer ones because they have much less stuff they can do. So if you like, to exaggerate, have a sniper character who can shoot through walls, stun enemies and fly, why would anyone even bother with Hanzo or Widowmaker.

I have officially seen everything this game has to offer.

I saw someone say Reinhardt should be nerfed. Not even his shield, no. His fucking melee.

I need to read the Overwatch forums more often, cause there is some jaw dropping stuff in there.

And now people saying Tracer should be buffed. My god.

And now someone's saying there should be a gay hero in Overwatch. Why does it matter?

Why are you doing this to yourself.

You're only hurting yourself by reading the blizzard official forums.

PTR peeps:

Should I keep practicing Zenyatta or work on a different support character, for season 2?

Zenny is still very good. I don't care for him in solo support situations becayse I think Mercy and Lucio are still stronger if you are forced in to a solo support but adding a Zenny to a Mercy or Lucio or Ana team is very very good.

Retiring heros would be the dumbest thing I can possibly think of. I wouldn't mind it if a character was reworked but to completely remove? I feel like that would just alienate a shit ton of people.

So Kaplan just went on the forums and said that whoever linked the article about retiring heroes didn't actually link the original article and Kaplan confirmed on the forums that he never fully said that they would retire heroes, but he was "leaving the door open" but confirmed that they are actually not thinking about retiring heroes.

Thank god.

Amen.

Altho Mei should retire.

People of minorities like being represented in the game they enjoy playing. Especially given how diverse Overwatch's roster is, and the fact that Blizzard has listened to their fanbase's wish for a more diverse roster by including heroes like Zarya and Mei, some people hoping for a gay character shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone.

As a member of various minorities myself, including the gay one, I don't mind that there's no characters of my minorities in the game (and in fact, other than Ana having been with a man before and Widowmaker having been married to a man as well, we do not know anything about the orientation of any of the characters, so that there's no gay characters isn't even a statement I can make for sure!), I definitely would enjoy seeing representation of my minority.

It's a similar case why people feel the need to ask for a hero from Canada or whatever other country they're from.

We already have pharmercy and McHanzo anyway, who are both totally canon due to the amount of porn fanart.

How can you tell certain characters aren't gay? I don't remember seeing much if any material on the sexual orientation of each character.

I have a feeling that some people make some stuff up. Like Zarya being lesbian. Is there any actual proof of this?

Have you even read my post? I specifically acknowledged that we do not know about the sexuality of any character but Ana (whose daughter Pharah had to have a father) and Widowmaker (who has been married before).

married people could be gay too but just never accepted it when they were married, so even they are not ruled out till blizzard says otherwise

Ana and Widowmaker also could be bisexual for all we know, but at the very least both of these characters had a heterosexual relationship in the past and are to my knowledge the only ones confirmed having had such, is all I'm saying.

Even then, how do we know Ana didn't merely want a child so she just had heterosexual sex for reproductive purposes. Widowmaker, meanwhile, had hetero tendencies if she married, but she could have been bi. So even then, there is wiggle room.

But that's my whole point. I don't understand your post. If there's basically no material on the sexuality of characters, how can you ask for representation of gay characters?

That would seem really odd for a character to be designed around a sexuality considering sexuality is never mentioned in this game.

I think it's cool that it's really vague so that you can form "head canon" for any character with whatever sexuality you prefer.
