Owlboy |OT| It's A Real Hoot!

Bruh
Advent and the aftermath.
Gotta ask do I ever unlock a
map? I want to re explore the dungeons to grab missing coins etc.

Apparently you don't, but that's just what someone else said. I was hoping it would be a later addition. Thankfully so far it's not TOO big but I definitely agree on wanting one.

My partner has a disability and they've told me so much about their childhood and how they were mocked even when they made their best shot.

The intro destroyed me. I was in tears.

I'm legit shocked there's no talk about the intro or about the game's commentary on disability in this thread.

no but you can see where there are coins missing in the menu

Yeah they are surprisingly thought of, until you reach that part with the
cannon ball and wounded lady.

there's barely any stealth there since you can
stun the pirates

Yeah the game's intro was very strong, the last game that had an intro that was pretty emotionally moving was Ori.

Does anyone have any issue with the game simply not starting? I was really looking forward to playing this game, but it seems to suffer from the same garbage that Stardew Valley does, where it simply will not start for me (no error message or anything either).

What're your PC/Laptop specs? Try ticking 'Disable DPI' in the game's .exe's Properties and see if it'll run then.

This game is really, really good. I played a little bit last night to the point where
they set up camp,
(not really a spoiler), and it just charmed the hell outta me. Multiple times I caught myself thinking, "This game actually feels like it's had 8 years of work and polish put into it."

How often can you say that?

That unfortunately did nothing. I don't think it's a spec issue, I'm running Windows 10 on an i5 4670 and a GTX770. If it's the same issue as Stardew Valley I've seen some suggestions that it's related to XNA and .NET but I've tried reinstalling the XNA redist several times already and Windows 10 won't even let me reinstall .NET as it is apparently part of the OS now.

Have you tried starting it in compatibility mode?

Owlboys surprise face cracks me up.

I’ve had an itch lately for a 2D game and I decided to get Ori: DE for £3 (cheap because I already own the original) and this due to the reviews. I’ve just finished
the Dreadnought
and it’s easily GOTY material so far. I expected something much like Ori where you’re given an intro and basic story and then left to your own devices but this is much more story and character focused, both of which have been great so far. Tbh everything has been great so far, the OST, artstyle and level design, the variety, the humour, up to now i’m not surprised at all at the 9 and 10 scores. Very impressed.

The intro’s fantastic, it does a brilliant job of introducing and eliciting empathy for Owlboy and displaying the relationship with his mentor all within about what? 2 minutes? The track that plays here is stunning as well. Better intro than Ori imo, which was good but dragged on a bit when the outcome was so predictable.

My only complaint is I'm in the
Lava
area and I feel like the game is giving me carpal tunnel syndrome. The green guy fires twice as fast if you pump the trigger, and there's pretty much back to back bosses where it's required. I had to stop as my hand is killing me.

I didn't expected what happened in
Advent. I thought the were just going to blow up the Dreadnought and be done with it.
.

Otus' reactions are friggin' adorable. Someone needs to make GIF rips of them.

Otus is very expressive, I was surprised by the level of details on the animations.

Have you tried starting it in compatibility mode?
Yeah, I've tried every compatibility option there is.

EDIT:
Well, I managed to fix the issue so in case anyone else has a similar issue here's what my problem was: Apparently X3DAudio1_7.dll exist in both 32 and 64 bit versions, and somehow things have gotten mixed up on my PC and the game is loading the wrong one. I can't seem to fix it in the Windows folder, but by placing the proper .dll file in the game folder everything is working fine. Admittedly, that's a very specific issue so I don't think there will be a lot of people with my particular issue.

Debugging menu has been left in the Steam build:

F12: Object Descriptors
F8: Sound Descriptors

Ha, pretty funny thing to find when I was attempting to take a screenshot.

I think I missed a room in the water temple.

There are two doors shortly after you team up with the pirate where one closes after you enter, and I went into that one first. I actually got angry because there are so many similar doors that dont do that. The timer should have clued me in though.

OK seriously fuck this
Monkey
Boss.
Word of advice if you can wrack up 1500 Coins redeem them asap, it'll make your life much easier.

this game is significantly better than i expected

charming, hilarious, touching narrative
interesting and fun navigation / platforming
combat is surprisingly solid and enjoyable
plenty of secrets

I've read an interview with Simen in a Norwegian newspaper that dealt with this part of the game. I remember he said something like: "We want the player to really get a feel of being put to side by those around you, and the fear of not being liked."

It's obviously one of the central themes of the game

you guys and gals
this game has Day and night cycles. Dunno if it starts from the beginning of the game, but just stand in place and watch the weather change.

The characters have the sort of charm I remember from the classic LucasArt games.

I have a bug after
the cannon flight section with the penguin bros
where my poor Otus was spit into an infinite nothing, only with a sky background. The save identifies me as being in the
Temple Observatory
, but I can fall forever or fly in any direction and never get anywhere. Reloading the save or restarting the game doesn't change it so it seems like a game breaking bug. Anyone else experience?

Just beat the Owl Temple. I'm more engaged in the story/characters than I would've expected. Surprisingly this is one of the strongest points of the game so far. Gameplay-wise I haven't been that impressed yet.

I do hope you can warp or fast travel to all places again at some point because my ocd is going to kick in with these coins, I need them all

Definitely. This is far more emotionally touching and engaging than "Ori." I thought the story in "Ori" was merely cute. Nothing more, nothing less.

OP doesn't say, what are the minimum and recommended specs?

Copy-paste min specs from Steam:

Steam said:
MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 7/8/10/Vista
Processor: Dual Core
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: Pixelshader 3.0 enabled graphics card(DirectX 10 capable graphics card)
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Storage: 600 MB available space
Additional Notes: Requires installation of Windows Media Player

There are no recommended specs...

Finished this today. Loved it, loved the music most of all, but the art style and design was really top-notch.

I'm missing tons of coins, and couldn't get the other two owl coins or complete the cannon challenge but I'd love to try it again and find this stuff, see if that changes things.

Would love more from this team, they know their stuff.

They did Savant - Ascent.

oh yeah, quick hint about the end of the game:

before going behind the ~relic thief go to the entrance of advent, after the owl temple, something really cute happens there :) nice music too

I can't for the life of me control the
cannon
minigame. It may have something to do with the fact that I am an "inverter" in other games, I don't know. I generally want to do the opposite of what the game is telling me to do, and there's no way to just practice. I had to just give up so far. Anyone else feel this way?

it's practice, really. I had to try a lot of times before i was comfortable enough to get all the rings

The pirate section and the
destruction/aftermath was really well done. Shit got real in this game pretty fast.
Can't wait to play more this evening.

Anyone have tips on this puzzle? I absolutely can't stand timed puzzles, I get way too stressed out and end up breaking stuff.

Pheeew that was intense, the lights kept going out even when they weren't completely down, so had to keep lighting them earlier so the progess was slow but managed in the end.

EDIT: Damn, tried to spoilertag the image.O_o

Light the candles with Alphonse, then latch on to the pendulum with LT and drag it round. If you can't get all the way round in time, drop it, then relight the candles.

Don't do what I did the first time round and shoot the pendulum to make it move round!
