Owlboy |OT| It's A Real Hoot!

So, I have a piece of crap HP laptop. It's an HP 2000 Notebook PC. Veeery very slow, Facebook chugs on it, it's a mess.

I can play most 2D games; I just beat AM2R and I love playing Downwell on it, both run fine. Think it can run this? I only ask cuz the spritework looks magnificent, I dunno if it's just crazy good or there might be technical specs behind it that'll make this game run like crap.

There's a section where do a nosedive, and if you don't know you have to go left immediately, you splat. Turns out I was pretty close to the end after watching a vid, but no way am I attempting to get all the rings on that.
 
I'm at the final boss, at least I think. My finger hurts too much from using R2 to shoot.

Game has been good but not as great as a lot of these reviews made it sound.
 
Everything in this game is so damn slow, it's really testing my patience. Even escape sequences have so many cutscenes (and why cant I skip over the 'door closed, enemy appeared' scene after the first time). It's somewhat charming but the dialogue and story feel like a knockoff of Shantae

You can always buy it on Steam and refund it if it doesn't run well.
 
I don't know if I am ever going to get the coins from the Boguin minigame. I've found all of the other coins, so it's kind of frustrating to be stuck on something that feels so out of pace with the rest of the game.

EDIT: Ahaha, I just got it! I took a break and came back to it, and I got it on like my second or third try, no problem.
 
Finally got around to playing it, so fucking good its just so god dam charming.

Been said before but love these little guys.

So, for anyone who's finished it: can you return to the map to collect coins/the minigame after you've beaten the game?
 
I just beat the game, and I immediately went back to use the three golden disks. Some heavier lore dropped on you there at the end. Absolutely loved it.

Yes. As far as I can tell, you will never at any point be cut off from any collectibles.
 
Well that's that game beaten; think we'll ever get an Owlboy 2? :P
I'll replay the game once a collectables guide goes up, there are many ultra hidden/secret paths.
 
Beat it too. While I definitely like the game, the strengths lie more in the presentation than the actual gameplay for me. That's still very impressive because I loved the ost, setting and characters, but I wish the (few) dungeons were more memorable and possibly a bit more complex. I enjoyed my time with it, but I don't really feel like replaying it or going after the leftover coins.

I may see what the owl coins reveal, but it sucks that the achievement for that is apparently glitched as of now: you have to collect all 3 coins first and not insert one of them, otherwise you won't get the achievement. A thread on Steam says the dev is working on fixing it retroactively. I'd definitely need it, because I already inserted the one coin I found.
 
Did another playthrough, getting this time absolutely all the coins possible as I progressed through the game to get the upgrades as soon as possible. Spoilers ahead for the whole game so don't read if you haven't finished.

A bit annoying you can't get significant upgrades at earlier point through the game but still, makes the game enjoyable. You can get Geddy's improved range as you unlock Tropos after the advent attack, as that will get you up to 1500, which can come in a bit handy during the Jungle temple,. You can get Alphonse's improved shotgun after just going a bit into the lava dungeon (just collect a few to get to 2000 and then use the teleporter). You don't get a lot of mileage but it makes sections of the lava dungeon really fun and the snake boss really easy.

Sadly you can only get the glitter cape after you've done Mesos's passage, which will help you find the last boguin, and then do the cannon minigame which is the last thing you'll need to unlock it. So you'll have it for the last sections of the game. However having the cape makes the entire ship section trivial and fun as you can also litteraly blast through bombs (both the guided one, and the one that drops through the shaft. After that you just got the last stage so you can also trivialize's solus's fight.

All in all, wish some of these upgrades would drop sooner, or able to have a new game + to have them as soon as possible just for the heck of it. But it was nice to rego through some of these dungeons and absolutely wreck shit at some point

As cool as that would be the SNES controller doesn't have enough sticks (or shoulder buttons, though so far I think R2/L2 are only used for menu navigation). You definitely need a right analogue stick to aim.

If you have a Wii classic controller you could get a USB adapter for it. Those things are basically SNES controllers with analogue sticks.

I died and it re-spawned me in the
teleporter
room and now when I head to the right there's a door that I can't open, so I cant proceed with the game.

I think I may be stuck. I'm in the
pirate's base
and inside of a air duct
that has three exits, one that leads to the room where I came from, the one leading to a chain that I need to pull and another that takes me to the top of the elevator. The first time I pulled the chain it played an animation showing where it opened though I'm not finding that door, and it's timed.
The previous rooms are locked now and I can't backtrack so any ideas?

If I'm remembering this one right,
you need to move the elevator itself, which you can do by spinning near the gear at the top of the elevator shaft. Not super intuitive.

Just finished this myself. I loved the atmosphere, the visuals, the music, and most of the actual gameplay. Most of the fights were solid - classic old school boss design - and the better puzzles were reminiscent of good Zelda puzzles. There were a few frustrations (
notably, the blackout sections of the floating continent and some optional bits like the cannon minigame
). I also found myself wishing that some of the side characters got more screentime and development; it felt like a lot of threads got set up and then abandoned in the final act. I didn't get every collectable or return to every area, so I likely missed some things (though
I did go back through the Owl Temple and saw the really touching scene near the ruins of Advent
).
 
Just finished the game. Wow at that ending, wow at the game overall. I expected nothing except nice visuals, and it ultimately delivered an incredible experience. One of my GOTYs so far.

Two cons though : a map would have been really useful, and the final boss was a bit disappointing, because it was a bit too easy and not spectacular enough.

I'm loving the last area, really well made and kind of gave me vibes o

. Also Otus being
unable to fly because they are past the mesosphere is nice. For the whole game you're used to flying most of the time, except for some stealth part.
The characters are lovable, and I didn't expect to have character development in this games, was a nice surprise, the scene when
Asio hugged Otus and apologized for everything was touching
, though
Solus being the Owlboy wasn't s surprise for me
saw it coming when the character first appeared.

I wanted to push and finish the game right now, but I'm so tired that I'm confuding the jump and the roll keys.

i missed one of the big coin things in the pirate ship. what do these do? I obtained one and put it in the altar thing in the forest area, but i dont think anything happened other than some vague text about the owl's history.



Also, what does the stone structure in Vellie do? When i interact with it, it just gives questions marks.


Is there a secret ending to this game?
 
All emblems can still be found after beating the game so don't worry.

I also finished the game once and then gathered all the emblems to see if the ending would change.
Sadly it doesn't change anything besides knowing more about the lore which is a bit of a let down. I wanted to believe that there were meaningful things to do once the game beaten.

In general the game is really nice with lots of feels, a bit short though, I expected one or two more dungeons.
Also a NG+ is clearly missing. It would have been great to be able to redo the game with all the upgrades we bought because looking for the last coins to unlock the last items is pointless.

Finally, cannon mini-game... Just why ?
 
Reached a snow area and I think I'll just stop now. Not feeling this game at all. It's pretty and charming I guess, but kind of pedestrian as a whole.

There's no big coin in the pirate ship. There is one in the owl temple, one in the way to the floating continent and one in the owl library up in mesosphere (the last part of the game), and you can explore a new zone after unlocking all that

that structure is where the pirates stole the first owl relic so there's nothing you can do there

about the last question,
i still think there is, by the things Asio says at the end and the info you get at the area you unlock after the coins, who knows though

i don't think calling a well designed game, beatiful and with great character development and story pedestrian is really fair tbh

big coins.
I found all of them but I dont think I found the
third place to put the last one.
 
just finished it. missed the third coin plus never saw where to put them. there was also that one big stone door in the main town, left side, that I don't ever remember going through or having a point.

besides that, incredible fucking game. superbly made and puts a lot of aaa games these days to shame with the amount of sheer love put into it

Finished. It's by no means perfect, mechanically it's mediocre, but the world is interesting and beautiful enough to keep me engaged and immersed all the way to the end. The story is simple and good enough, but the game really shines in character creation. For me the characters in Owlboy are Monkey Island II level, and I feel the same joy encountering and getting to know new characters as I used to feel in old school lucas art games.

I'm highly sympatethic to the game, I have lots of respect for its creator. It deals with heavy themes (disability, estrangement, bullying, being ignored) in an intelligent manner, withouth boring and transparant moralism, without banality. I think it's fair to call it a work of art in this respect.

I hope for great things in the future, I hope the team wants to go even further. The talent is there, the main challenge is creating mechanics that are as interesting as the rest of the game. It doesn't have to be hard or complex. Just look at what FEZ achieved with the simple mechanic of rotation mixed with simplistic platforming. Owlboy lacks this distinctive mechanic to be remembered by.

I look forward to checking out Vikings on trampolines when they officially release it.
 
I'm liking it so far, but the constant chatter is starting to be annoying. I'm starting to skip the dialogues. I agree with a few of the posts above saying it's mechanically average, there's some hint of clever ideas in the puzzles, like grabbing clouds but it's often way too simple. A shame as the temples could have reached Zelda's quality with a bit of outside the box thinking. Same for the combat, that is pretty mundane after a while and never evolves or gets challenging. There's so many checkpoints that health isn't an issue, you can just rush if you want. So, it can feel a bit pedestrian yeah.
The levels aren't very interesting to explore IMO. I don't know, there's something about the tiles used and the level design that is repetitive. I guess being able to fly anywhere doesn't help.
The presentation and world building is top-notch obviously, it has the same charm as a Zelda, which is no small praise.
But all of this, makes it a bit off, it's a bit shy of greatness.
Hyper Light Drifter earlier this year is much more stronger mechanically.
 
So I got the credits, but I only ended up with 6 hours with a decent amount of backtracking. I know there's a secret with the
coins and the door past the left of Stratos
but does that add substantially more game? Also, assuming that it doesn't happen in that secret, I'm really disappointed that you never
fight Malstrom
. I guess finding all of the coins could add another hour but that's pretty superfluous. Maybe I'm too strung up with this 8-10 hours comment and played a bit faster than most. Anyway, really great game. It was definitely an experience that I would recommend to most.
 
I beat the game and went back to
Mesos? The snowy place? On my way there I was warped into Twig's house and I can't remember how to get out of Mesos....
Help?
 
i really loved the first half hour, gameplay is rock solid. saddens me to hear the more negative responses to the later game.

especially the ton of text thing worries me.
