Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

Wait. No way ... You still can not freaking pause a download on PS4? I thought they added that (actual it is not an addition, it's a fix)?

I think it's more of a joke that you still don't even get notifications when your friends are online. Talk about one of the most basic things you can include...

The Xbox OS has been getting updated pretty regularly since release. If you're someone that still hates the OS, it will probably only get worse for you.

I could never imagine buying a game for my X1 over my PS4 purely because of the UI.

Then again, I don't like the X1's UI that much, and I don't spend much time on either console's UI. I much prefer the speed and simplicity of the PS4's UI over the X1's slower, and more layered design. I really wish they would ditch the metro design and go back to the earlier 360 UI's.

if anything it makes me hate the damn thing.
.

Should probably add why. Every time I boot my XB1 the OS just feels sluggish and slow to respond, where as the PS4 is pretty instantaneous to move in and out of. I also prefer the way you can record your gameplay on the PS4. As for the stores, I don't really have an issue with either.

I don't own a PS4 yet, but I will say that I love the X1's store.

It is well organized, promotes new releases, and if you click on a game it will bring up a ton of info about it as well as allowing you to watch uploaded clips for the game and live twitch streams for it.

Also the friends app is designed really well.

I would expand the thread title to include basically all the firmware updates and not just the OS. MS has been improving damn near everything with all of those firmware updates. The OS I feel is kind of a wash since there are pros and cons when compared to the minimalistic one the PS4 features. But what's inarguable is that the Xbox One has about a trillion more features now than the PS4 because Sony doesn't give two shits about improving anything other than stability.

Nope. Still prefer the PS4's UI. I don't enjoy using Metro without a touch interface.
I don't use the Xbox for TV either, because of the degraded picture quality and requiring to have both the box and cable on at all times did not sit well with me.

Regardless, I get multiplatform games on either PC or PS4, so the Xbox hardly gets any use until more exclusives are out anyway. The most feature-laden OS in the world wouldn't change that.

Yea I felt the same way as you at first. Then I released I had to pin everything to the left. Once u have to scroll thru it, it's just like the ps4. Except the ps4 runs much faster. Suspend/Resume is awesome though. But overall games dictate who's used and the steady flow of indies on the ps4 keeps it on. While I have a hard time finding reasons to turn on my Xbox neo

I certainly think it's in a better state than the PS4 OS, but honestly they are both suffering from a lack of several key features and poor usability in a few areas. At least we're getting media playback on the Bone soon.

Absolutely. Sony's OS ends up feeling dated in my opinion. Half of the 'features' seem to only function half the time, with little to no feedback as to 'why'.

For example, my small group of friends always have trouble with the store, 'whats new' and the other options for individual games (Recent activities and so on). It isn't even a 50% chance usually whether these will load in properly or at all. The most frustrating part for me is that there isn't really a way to discover what the problem is (yes, connected to PSN).

Horizontal scrolling is ridiculous and a really poorly thought out concept from the beginning. I don't like how the system handles storage (for instance, having to reinstall a game to recover your save data at all), its initially confusing and afterwards just silly.

I'm not saying the x1 is perfect, as it is far from. But the ps4's OS feels well over a few steps behind.

All that being said... I'll still buy games for whichever has the better performance, or in the case of multiplayer being the biggest draw, whichever console has the most friends I'd like to play with that are also getting the game. That being said... Even in that case, the x1 has seen much more use since launch than PS4 in my place.

Just my 2 cents though.

edit: engrish/additions

Yeah, suspend/resume, tv integration, voice control, voice activation, usb media, snap feature and all that stuff

It's not even comparable

There are things with both of the systems' OS that I would like to see improved on/added to/changed, I dunno that the number of items on a list for each would be that much different.

Having said that, install/load times on the PS4 have consistently been head and shoulders above what I deal with on the XB1, and that is a pretty big deal.

a trillion? Xbox One has about a trillion more features than the PS4? The last update of the XB1 was 50% of stuff that the PS4 already had. And the PS4 stilll have features that the XB1 doesn't have.

Yeah like what? Hosting a show with dumb stickers or a really poor photoshop for your game videos that don't even record correctly the majority of the time?

Maybe you mean a physical feature of the box itself like the ability to bounce up and down when you press it down on one corner?

Stop defending Sony with the old line of "50% of the stuff the PS4 already had". MS has gone far past that and added a load of stuff the PS4 doesn't even have in the pipeline to be implemented. Sony has done a piss poor job supporting its console with firmware updates. I don't get how anyone can defend that.

The only thing that the PS4 will really have over the Xbox One after the 2.0 update (who the hell knows when this will be) is the share play thing. From past experience, I bet that thing is broken as hell at implementation too. Probably won't be until 3.0 when it actually works as advertised.

No idea what are you talking about...

or a really poor photoshop for your game videos

It's something, but surprise surprise: You can save your videos to USB and use your fancy 1000$ software if you want it.

that don't even record correctly the majority of the time?

Never had problems but I hope yours get fixed soon.

SharePlay, RemotePlay are pretty cool features. Just that gives me much more value than watching a TV show at the same time. And if the rumours are true the next update will bring themes.

You only preffer the features of the XB1. Doesn't make you more right or wrong than me.

Yes they are not giving a lot of updates and It's really behing compared to the XB1 in features. I was just marking you over exaggerated that. And the thing about the last update it's a fact, not an opinion.

Activity feed that is not filled with ads and actually really cool to check on friends achievements and videos. Instant resume to where you left the game at. Phone app that is snappy and has the store integrated. I mean all these small things kinda make me prefer to play games on it instead of PS4 despite the power difference between the two.

Concur on all of these points. Shockingly, it's the PS4 interface that I feel is always trying to sell me something (particularly in the activity feed) which was never the case on PS3. Between these things and the controller, I like both boxes but I prefer the Xone.

EDIT: For people saying how the Xone's interface is disorganized... is there any way to sort games on the PS4 OS? I have Apps and Games all jumbled in no great order (guessing it's by most recent but damn that's annoying). If anything, I'm finding the Xone's OS to be better organized and the kinect "xbox go to whatever" thing makes it even easier. I want to love the PS4 OS, but it seems like I can't do anything I really want with it. I too miss the XMB. Was so much better.

I love the suspend/resume feature, but the OS is not my cup of tea. I don't like Windows 8 metro and this is pretty close to it. It's just so boring to look at. Not to mention how disorganized everything is and I hate using voice to navigate other than telling it to watch tv and turn on and off. PS4 is far more fluid, and you can get most anywhere in the OS pretty effortlessly. I just wish it was as robust as the PS3 as the XMB is still my favorite console OS to date.

Xbone camp here. It's just a better experience. Since the topic right now is OS. I have it on most of the time for media features and apps. Ps4 gets booted exclusively for games, nothing else.

No, as a owner of both consoles, I prefer to navigate the PS4 OS as I can pretty much do anything within seconds and with minimal button presses. Xbox One still has some layers going on, where you gotta hunt things down to perform a task with the controller. Though on a positive note for the Xbox One, I do prefer things like game clips being stored to the cloud, so your friends can see them instantly and vice versa. They have a different approach, but I don't prefer Xbox One's OS in any material way, though I do think as it grows and improves it will be the more robust OS and perhaps my value of it will change.

It really does. I didn't think I would give a damn about the voice controls, but it's my preferred way of controlling the system by far now.

Also it plays so well with my PC. I love being able to right click on videos, music playlists, etc and send them to the XBox OS

This is easily the most obnoxious thing about Sony's lack of updates. Once features are implemented regardless of the console there will always be bugs. So we're still waiting forever for their first pass at new features and it begs the question how long it'll be til they actually work properly.

They claim to be working on this stuff and have alluded to the fact they're obtaining feedback and listening to fans, so you have to think complacency isn't an issue, it's incompetence. They just don't know how to implement these things as fast and/or as well as MS can. They hyped up a crap ton of features before launch and so far MS has beaten them to the punch on all of them. I guess I can take comfort in the fact that my games will look a bit better or that I spent $100 less but jesus it's getting frustrating considering the PS4 is closing in on a year since launch.

Anyone else leaning more towards Xbone with all of the recent updates?

I've owned both, and to answer this, no. The XB1 has it's own merits. I like how MS has provided great support for apps. There's a lot more apps for the XB1 than the PS4. OS-wise, I say this is the biggest advantage.

After that, it's all preference. I prefer the snappiness and quickness of the PS4. I can be gaming in almost no time. Overall, to me the XB1 feels bloated and laggy. If MS has properly integrated TV and Kinect, as they advertised, it would have been fantastic.

The biggest disappointment of the XBO OS is that it feels like they took a step back from the 360. Where the hell are the avatars, MS? C'mon, one of my favorite things of the 360.

Most people think the main issue with the PS4's OS is game selecting if they have a huge ribbon of games. If you have a headset or the camera, just use voice commands to select games and start them. My only qualm is I wish they would expand this to launch the store/browser etc since its not currently programmed in the voice commands. I do find it neat you can often say part(s) of the names and they will still select.

What??

I find the Xbone OS convoluted and slow. PS4 is nice and quick and a lot of details are available without having to open separate apps.

I own all 3 and I rank them PS4 > XB1 > Wii U for my personal use. I don't really care for most OS features outside of speed and to a lesser extent organization. I really dig the Pins that are in the Xbox OS, but tiles can do die in a fire and never come back as far as I'm concerned. A lot of the features in it aren't as straightforward to navigate to as I would like. The PS4's UI is simplistic to use, which is a plus to me, but give me freaking folders already, and let me place games(things that I use) on a separate bar from "Internet", "Music Unlimited", etc.(things that I don't use). I also feel like the Blu-Ray player and video apps are better on the PS4(only non-gaming use that either gets). In short, the PS4's UI makes me prefer it over the XB1's, which has more features when you get down to it, but I feel like it cares a bit more about style than I would like.

Both consoles are excellent at the "put in a disc and play games" feature. I honestly have no strong preference either way since I don't use consoles for anything else.

Yes! I mean why is it so impossible to hire some extra people or at least FIRE some people and REPLACE them with more competent firmware people? Sony doesn't have money to buy exclusives, they don't have money to buy deals like NFL, and they don't have money to obtain a competent firmware team. What the hell do they have money for?

I still feel like the process of turning on/getting into a game is faster on the PS4.

It might not actually be the case, but it feels that way to me.

This is why I like the Xbox One better with Kinect. I don't need to worry about button presses. I can get almost anywhere very quickly by using my voice. although I would have no idea how to navigate the Xbox One UI without Kinect. The PS4 Ui is Ok but to find something can take a while. I was on my PS4 last night and I had to go through dozens of tiles to find what I was looking for. I have no idea why almost everything is on one row.

Yeah I don't think that's actually the case. Suspend and resume makes it impossible for the PS4 to be faster than the Xbone to get you back where you left off in a game.

Like how Kinect solves your problems with the Xbone UI, the PS4 camera would solve your problem with finding games and apps without going through any tiles.

I thought I'd be the only one, but yes the OS makes me prefer the Xbox One over the PS4. Honestly, I play my PS4 more due to all of my friends having one.

This gen I actually like both the Playstation's and Xbox's OS quite equally as apposed to last gen where using the PS3's OS for more than 5 minutes gave me a headache. I agree with what a lot of others are saying, PS4 is more responsive, XB1 is more feature-rich, and continues to widen the gap in that regard every month.

The OS/UI's are generations apart, and whilst the Xbox has the more sophisticated, integrated and smoother features, I actually prefer the simplicity of the incompetently lacklustre attempt on the PS4. Knowing I can only do a certain amount of things means navigating the UI is quicker and simpler.
