Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

I was so happy for this... and then other than the Day One achievement that I got with the console, I've had nothing else to actually scan... still had to type the damn code in when it came to getting the Destiny beta.

I downloaded my copy of Forza via QR code and thought it was just badass. Sadly I too haven't had anything else to scan :(

Maybe Xbox Point cards come with QR codes these days?

At least your wife didn't do what mine started doing. After she got annoyed of me shouting commands over time, she would start shouting commands at random times just to mess with me or to prevent me from turning it off with voice because by then she had learned them all.

It's a good thing that for whatever reason neither system really understands her with much accuracy most of the time.

That's pretty hilarious :D

Not even close. PS4 seems so barebones without all the bells & whistles X1 offers. Throw in the superior controller and it just makes it hard for me to be enthused about turning on my PS4. TLOU Remastered is awesome tho.

I have both and while I initially preferred the PS4, it over the past few months I find myself using it less and less. I really enjoy the regular updates on the Xbox side and really wish Sony would step up and do more regular updates to the PS4 OS. It is severly lacking at this point, in my opinion. I konw I'll be using it more once DriveClub comes out, but until then i don't see myself using it much I'm sorry to say. That being said, competition is good and I think it has defintelty made Xbox change how they are doing business. I see Sony doing the same, especially if Xbox closes in on them with units sold.

Shit like this.

You don't even mention the OS at all, but thank God you threw in at the end how "awesome" TLOU is to cover your tracks.

Yep. I find the Xbox One OS to be far better, more interesting and nicer to use than the PS4 OS. The PS4 OS is fine, I just find the Xbox One OS to be more comprehensive and better thought out.

I use Kinect constantly too.

The monthly updates are the one thing I want from the Xbox One on PS4. I full expect those to die down and MS to return to the bi-yearly updates they did on 360 but for now it's a very nice thing to have since these consoles released with such a lacking feature set.

Nah, it will continue. MS is going full bore with agile development. Even Windows 9 is going to be updated on a monthly basis as well.

Not the entire console, no, but the OS is definitely a lot better. Though the PS4 gets the job done well enough, aside from the storefront.

You, me, and Phil agree!

That means he'll let the firmware team know about this and XB1 will have themes for the October update. Meanwhile, the only thing we're hearing from the Sony camp is Shu trying to figure out why his console is so awesome. I'll be genuinely shocked if the 2.0 update has these rumored themes at this point.

PS4 is the powerful sports car that's a blast to drive.

XB1 is the fully loaded luxurious SUV that gives you options and comfort.

In an ideal world, I'd have both the sports car and the SUV. I'll settle for the PS4 and XB1 once I get my hand on the PS4 next month...

lol are you hurt?....why do I have to mention the OS in a thread about the OS...smh

Hurt? Nah. Annoyed? Absolutely.

Lots of posturing from all camps in here about why their chosen system is better with only brief encounters with what makes the operating systems better. grabbed your post from among the many examples. no offense.

I own both and XB1 gets used every day as a media hub for our living room. It's a great all around device for that stuff and keeps getting better with each update.

The ps4 gets turned on for games and that's it. I like them both for different reasons. If I could only have one device I would probably stick with the XB1, but I also have a pc anyways.

I tend to prefer PS4s straightforward-ness. Less clutter and to the point.
X1s is nice but i tend to have to "find" stuff sometimes. Not a big deal...but for the sake of comparisons

I'm not big on either UI, though I'd give the xbox the edge until ps4 gets folders. As far as the UI being the deciding factor for which system I buy my games on, fuck no. If I have to choose between a slightly speedier UI or better fidelity and a bigger multiplayer user base, I'll pick the shit that actually affects my gaming experience. The seconds it takes to get to the game from the UI are miniscule compared to the hours I spend in the game. I think it's fucking insane to choose to play a multiplat on the xbox with the UI as the only reason if it's got worse performance (read: if your friends are on there or you're a trophy whore, those are perfectly acceptable reasons to do that, though. D3 would also be fine as the two versions are essentially identical). That's just my opinion.
Also, any benefit of the speedy voice ccontrols is decimated by the 20+ minute wait time for Disc based games to install. Shit is horrid, as are the patch sizes of many games.

Xbox is my main media box, though. I love being able to switch from Guacamelee to TV to Netflix instantly. And suspend/resume is the best.

What he should mention in the thread about consoles? What is there to consoles other than their OS and games? Or do you expect some hardware bells and whistles? Come on, son, try harder next time. This drive by shitposting from people who play only on one platform and now feel like they need to facilitate the fact of its "domination" is getting annoying.

Really depends what you use it for. For people using xbox for all its media capabilities, that OS makes sense.

Me for my part I only play games and watch hulu, netflix, and crunchy roll. I need my os to be snappy and quick. That is exactly what the PS4 does.

I actually like the PS4 much better as a media device than the XB1 for a couple of seemingly quite small reasons. The big one is that two of the three main apps I watch, Netflix and Amazon, have much better apps on PS4, and the third app, Hulu, has a smoother and quicker UI on PS4. The little reasons that add up when using these apps ALL THE TIME are that it takes TWO button presses to pause on XB1 and just one on PS4, and the controller takes too long to come back to life from auto-turn-off on XB1 compared to the PS4.

It's a thread about the console operating systems. Not the games, not the hardware, the controller could be included, maybe, because you interface the operating system with it. But it's very clearly specifically about the operating systems of the consoles.

Edit: misread. Still, that was a lame drive-by shitpost from that guy.

The title is mentioning the OS.

So much for misreading lol, I need to get some sleep, Diablo 3 is consuming all my sleep time. I swear it was about OS, then edited my first post from "thread about OS" to "thread about consoles", because for some reason I thought I was wrong.

Just having PS4 I will say I play games not OS, so there's a little that can bother me outside games. It [console] is an electronic device with some little program that helps run the whole thing which was created to play games, and have as little interaction as possible anything else.

Good question and yes I do prefer the XB1 OS by leaps and bounds. PS4 OS is pretty damn clunky at this point. I'm seriously tired of the XBM. I hate having to cycle through useless icons.

As an owner of all the current platforms I lean towards the X1 more than the others especially with kinect. It really is the main hub of my media center. It gets turned on everyday. Then the Wii U (Just love the quick start feature), and finally the PS4. But the PS4 isn't that far off. The advancement they made from PS3 is a win.

I have to say I spend about equal time on both but yes. The XBONE OS is fairly awesome and I do find I prefer it for many things.

So i was mostly buying games on my PS4, but after numerous updates of Xbone's OS it made me prefer to play games on it than PS4. Activity feed that is not filled with ads and actually really cool to check on friends achievements and videos. Instant resume to where you left the game at. Switching from TV to a game. Phone app that is snappy and has the store integrated. I mean all these small things kinda make me prefer to play games on it instead of PS4 despite the power difference between the two.

Anyone else leaning more towards Xbone with all of the recent updates?

I like the PS4's straight forward and simple and clean navigation system of OS....I've had plenty of time on X1's dashboard and features with some close friends and of course my neighbor where we are always gaming on his Xbox One (he's xbox only) and i am impressed at what it can do...he comes over to game with me on my PS4 so we trade off on that front but with that said....i think Xbox One offers a heck of a lot more things to tinker with...but i still prefer the speedy simple clean and straight forward approach of sony's OS and features and i know what we see now in PS4 is a WIP imho, Sony is going to be adding much more features like MS has with their box...so in due time PS4 will be a lot more robust in terms of features and stuff to tinker with and will be much more lean in terms of that huge amount of memory footprint it currently uses which means another boost in performance for PS4 down the road..but by no means am i suggesting PS4 does not have its own set of assets and features that impress to play around with...it does but X1 just has more to offer at this point in time but things will improve for PS4 once Sony gets their firmwares going with more added features.

Also to those of us including myself that have a PC connected to our big screen in the living room is a non-issue really, especially for me since i do have a high end TV tuner card that has more functions and features VS. what the X1 offers with their hdmi in, TV tuner,etc... a PC with a nice TV tuner card is the Ultimate home media setup especially if its a high end PC like i have in the living room....i just look at PC being where a person should go if they are looking for these media features that we see Microsoft trying to do with their game console....i just think a game console should be aimed at that and not a whole lot more becuse the age of smart tv's, usb plug-in media sticks, etc and micro-pc,etc are becoming more and more mainstream let alone cable companies coming out with such features like the new X1 Xfinity OS. .

All i know is my PC with a TV tuner which i've always had a TV tuner connected to my pc as far back as when ATI had their ALL-IN-WONDER cards like that old 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder video card i had...man that sucker brings back such great memories.

PS Apologies to OP if bringing up PC was not cool on my part, i know everyone takes things like that differently so maybe i should of kept that out.

Peace and great thread to read!

It does, but keep in mind I have the Kinect (and love it). PS4 interface is fine, don't got me wrong, but X1 OS is just much better (probably because Microsoft is an OS company). In all honesty the main thing that makes me prefer it is the games.

The main feature blows themes out of the water, it's a real meaningful feature comin in 2.0 something that may change gaming in the future.

The PS4 UI does what I need it to do, easily lets me find my games and play them and invite friends to chats when we are gonna play something. I require nothing else, I'm a simpleton.

PS 4 does it just fine, wouldn't have that much of a problem with the XBO's UI either if it wasn't so laggy.

At this point, I still prefer the PS3's UI, though that could just be from seven years of using it.

As a ux/ui designer by trade, i find the xbone ui almost offensive.

Its a little confusing at first but once u get your feet wet its actually quite handy. I agree with those saying you have to search for stuff at first, they need to find better solutions to bringing some features to the forefront more.

H vong to wait for games to install and patch before i can play the on Xbox One makes it shit IMO. I bought my son Forza 5 this weekend, he had to sit there for 30 minutes before he could play the fucking game. Until they fix that, it's shit.

I prefer the PS4 OS cause it's way faster and more practical.

Suspend/ Resume is nice but not a deal breaker for me.

I love the Xbox OS for since I have a two year old in the house, it's super easy to suspend and resume games and streaming services then pick right back up where I left off. PS4 feels archaic by comparison but I own more games on PS4 so it's a mixed bag.

Have to admit though Xbone is designed for a unified MS device world where everyone owns a win 8 phone and a Surface 3 to compliment it.

I'd have to say no OP, I spend so little time on the dash it makes no difference to me. I turn it on, check whose online, check who has a party up and then go and play some games. The X1 OS maybe more feature rich but I haven't turned it on since TLoU came out, now I'm on to Diablo and then Destiny. I can see how people would prefer the x1 os over the ps4 but for me tbh I'm too busy playing games to really worry that much.

I really hate how the Xbone loads everything as a separate fullscreen app. Wanna see friends? Loads an app. Options? Loads an app. I'm never really sure if my game will remain running after I have opened 2-3 separate new windows. Really dumb.
I still have trouble finding specific options manually, since the OS is quite confusing, so I have to resort to yelling stuff to the Kincect until I get lucky. That's not good.
As for the suspend-resume feature, I tried it once and it didn't work. It appears I play games in long sessions and then take a break, maybe for days, so the feature is kinda useless for me.
Xbox One's OS feels like a terrible step backwards from the 360. Slow and confusing. I wish they'd just go back to what worked.

In contrast, the PS4 OS is super-fast, especially compared to the PS3. Much less confusing and everything seems to be part of a whole, not a separate app. Even the store loads instantly!

I only have one friend who owns both, and I've heard nothing but bad stuff about the xbone ui. Judging from the responses in this thread, it looks like his complaint has merit.
