OXM: Why splitting Xbox One's OS RAM allocation is good for developers

That would be really a huge, huge megaton! Haha!

It all comes down to how much money MS is willing to lose.

In the long run it would be better for MS to eat the losses now and sell the One with Kinect for 399 than make Live free.

Yeah, I agree. They can't abandon the platform tax. That's the only thing that I can think of that would make people say wow though.

Microsoft buying Nintendo...

After all, you will say wow is a reference to Iwata, hehe.

Maybe canceling gold requirement for apps?

His/Her original response was to the fact that MS's internal metrics agreed with the point that people aren't too interested in multitasking on the XBone when they can easily do it on tablets on phones, so I don't really see this would fit.

I'm going to go with NFL as well.

It's a half-billion dollar deal and a major part of their initial presentation. That's definitely "wow" worthy. Of course, we have no idea how far along the deal was at that point, so maybe it's not even possible that it would fall apart.

If it's a positive "wow", I'll go with cancelling the paywall for apps like Netflix.

Maybe it was more about "would you pay $60/year to use the apps on Xbox?"

So according to cboat, MS internal metrics say that people just want to play games, other media and have streaming features? And they'll cancel <something> because of this?

Yep, must be paywall for apps.

Still, he said it'd be announced in mid September. Why would they announce a cancellation of a feature like that. Especially the NFL deal when the NFL starts mid September?

they are showing off app stuff mid sept. he didnt say anything about announcing a cancellation, but it sounded like he was going to check his sources before saying more and that we'd say wow.

gold payway for app would be a good cancellation and seems to fit, but doesnt seem wow to me.

I don't see how they will ever let go of the NFL deal.

Walk through the business strategy with me for a moment. They are betting big on television being watched in conjunction with Kinect. At the moment, live sports are the only live television events that aren't declining in ratings. Therefore, to really sell the device as the be-all-and-end-all of watching television, they need to offer a better sports watching experience. Otherwise it would just be a cable box without a DVR that needs to backbone off of a real cable box.

The commands won't activate if your lips aren't moving at the same time I believe. It won't see your friend saying "Xbox off," so it won't be a problem with your situation.

You completely misread, or you just understood it in a way that would allow you to respond with that.

And as far as cboat's stuff, I'm going to go with cancelling some stupid policies concerning their app ecosystem.

Maybe it was more about "would you pay $60/year to use the apps on Xbox?"

But if they weren't interested in using it in the first place than why would they use it just because it was free? If they stayed in the Gold "package", then it would just be a bonus for the people who game online on their Xbox.

And by the wording of "cancellation" this sounds more like a feature or (less likely) a game being cancelled than getting rid of a fee.

Think of the saturation they'll receive by being advertised as the official sponsor of the NFL during (almost) every game? That's a huge market and its their exact demographic. don't see how they cancel that. But I guess it would make me say wow if they do.

I thought it was a brilliant strategy myself, but at the end of the day it's about money. As much money as this could make for Microsoft, the NFL may simply be asking for too much. If the price is simply too high and the bargaining negotiations are falling apart, it could very well be cancelled, or at least not available for now.

I don't think it will be the tv stuff because that is not really app related but it would be hilarious if they did and they are stuck with the inferior ram set up for pretty much nothing.

If it's not Kinect, can't think of much that would make me go wow, unless they lost Titanfall exclusivity, that might do it. Or maybe they are pushing back the launch date? That might do it too.

I don't buy this. Why would they announce it before the deal would be fully negotiated? Would be really stupid, and put it them in a bad bargaining position with the NFL.

I don't know, why would they announce a family plan before they even knew what exactly it would be like?

The deal could have been closed or close to it, but without a signed contract, nothing's set in stone.

Anyways, just a guess :) You guys are right that this seems unlikely. And you are right, announcing a feature before the deal is completely sealed would significantly lower their bargaining position, so I don't think Microsoft would do that.

The deal is pretty much done though. $400 million over the course of 5 years.

Maybe because Microsoft hasn't brought out many new experiences, or good ones in games the past 3+ years

While MS's first and second party studio's have been less than spectacular, the 360 is still to place to get multiplatform games, so I don't think this is really the case.

I don't think they would have made an announcement if they hadn't scratched the details out. I also don't think they would cancel the deal after sinking tons on up front cash into said deal without ever letting the deal come to fruition. Why would they even attempt such a huge deal and get it signed without trying to see if consumers would like it?

Maybe their looking to limit the snap functionality while in game to some extent? Who knows, this is all random speculation but will be interesting nonetheless.
