If competition is good for the industry, why does everyone want Xbox to fail?

I don't want it to fail. They keep making some bad decisions which leads to a lot of mockery in this forum, but that's it. I never bought an XBOX but if I felt it was the best value I would buy it 🤷‍♂️
(PS: I have gamepass)

This is sarcasm, right?
Not at all , it's been almost 19 years since PlayStation & Nintendo made IMU's standard in there controllers while Xbox ignored it , it's been almost 12 years since PlayStation made the touch pad , visual & sonic feedback standard parts of their controller & now DualSense has added these little things like a standard mic & adaptive triggers at this point PS5 & Xbox Series should not be treated like they are the exact same platform when devs are in the creative process of making games.

Some games use the features but it's mostly at the optional level but not built around the features . I've seen enough in the Astro Bot games to know that different types of gameplay features can be used to make new games .

I don't want them to fail--I've enjoyed Xbox since my hands held the Duke--but I don't really see "Buy this studio, now it's a first-party game!!" as "healthy competition." In fact, I kinda see it as the direct opposite of that.

Pretty much since its inception, Xbox was my go-to third-party system, with really good "exclusives" in the 360 era. Loved the One X (not so much the One), and the Series X is a great piece of kit.

But to be honest, with the PS4 gen, the PlayStation has now became my 3rd party system of choice.

I dont want a failure.
But power leveling yourself into existence aint it. The money infused and lack of hardly any homegrown IPs after all this time in insane - its buy IPs and thats it. They chase and cant lead.
Some of the worst practices in gaming are their doing. To me ive always felt Xbox is simply a bait into the larger Microsoft ecosystem they push for. It's always selling us on how "Gamer" they are - but its fake.

Competitors are first and foremost gaming devices backed by company's heavily focused on that division for survival. Microsoft is not in that situation and simply dont care.

I honestly think the XBox community are the primary reason Microsoft cannot compete and while it's Microsoft's fault as well, I blame the community more. They do not buy or support games and this has been going on well before Gamepass. Can't blame Gamepass for FF16's failure. Microsoft made some good decisions as well, yet it seems like the community just doesn't care.

Then again, Microsoft for years didn't have the most desirable exclusives, didn't do enough to set it apart from PlayStation and made other peculiar decisions as well and the Blizzard/Activision deal was probably the worst move in video game history which essentially destroyed the XBOX brand which lead to multiplatform games, layoffs, price increases, etc.

Lastly, brand loyalty I'm guessing. A lot of gamers do seem to want Sony to dominate because of familiarity, history, reputation and loyalty I suppose, but give PlayStation gamers some credit. If it wasn't for PlayStation, third party developers would most likely be SCREWED and would not make near as much money without Sony.
You absolutely can blame gamepass for it.. once you get used to not buying games, thats how you live, maybe if something like GTA comes out or some universally praised game, you go the extra mile, but outside of that you just wait for the "eventually" gamepass release.

if competition is good for the industry why were so many cheering on Microsoft's acquisitions of publishers? their intent was to stifle competition, the fact it blew up in their faces doesn't change that

So, if Xbox leaves completely you think devs will embrace these gimmicks and not just carry on as is and target PC as the lead platform?

Will be good to see. What is an IMU?

Not even Sony uses the touchpad properly. Its just a button now. Usually a map button.

Sorry, you are right, they are more than 25:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • MLB The Show 21
  • MLB The Show 22
  • MLB The Show 23
  • MLB The Show 24
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Horizon Call of the Mountain
  • Firewall Ultra
  • The Last of Us Part I Remastered
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
  • Helldivers 2
  • Rise of the Ronin (not really first party, but it's funded by sony)
  • Stellar Blade
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure (developed by third-party but IP owned by Sony)
  • Days Gone Remastered
  • Death Stranding Director's Cut (not really first party, but it's funded by sony and back at the time, the IP was property of Sony)
  • Death Stranding 2 On The Beach (not really first party, but it's funded by sony)

Edited, as MLB it's multi, lol. I didn't know that
Hang on you specifically said exclusives!

I've long said I'd prefer XBOX to be in a strong competitive position, because the pressure they'd put on Sony would ultimately be beneficial to consumers.

But it's still fun to see them fail, specially because this is all the result of the stupid decisions they've made over the years. Also seeing fanboys having mental breakdowns never gets old.

As with all things, it depends. I don't think people want to skip competition, they just want some of the terrible decisions to be made accountable. I'd say the same for Sony myself.

Sure, but who started most of these?
Not Xbox?

Edit:

Lets run through it for those at the back.

Paid online -
Xbox were not the first to offer paid online.

Forced microtransactions during the 360 era
What do you mean "forced" I'm not aware of being forced to buy anything. Wasn't Horse Armor widely regarded are one of the first MTX? So blame Bethesda. (you can't give Xbox credit for this just because they own them now, otherwise we have to give them credit for Skyrim etc as well.;

Online DRM
Xbox did not invent online DRM as far as im aware.

Pushing for the death of physical games
Inevitable regardless

Closure of great studios
Psygnosis, Evolution Studios say hello.

Constant lies
I'll give you this one.

Well, considering how much they spam "treat others the way they want to be treated," I just assume they want to be mocked relentlessly and forced to disappear from the public view entirely, and I treat them accordingly. Based on their behavior, of course.

They're aggressively wokeist and that wokism has been pouring into their games and destroying treasured franchises. They looked to hire people who "hated" Halo, remember? And they did a great job with that. I mean, the results speak for themselves.

The sooner they're gone, the better. They're irredeemable. And beyond Xbox, Microsoft is just such a terrible company anyway.

I only wanted Xbox to fail when their response was to essentially buy out every game publisher under the sun. Having MS own literally every publisher of worth was never a positive thing for gaming (we even got sony doing dumb shit like buying bungie to try and counter)

when they pivoted away from that and started being more forward thinking about offering support for all the systems they actually came back into my good graces again.

I just wish they had the strong 360 like game lineup to back it up.

their first party games have improved but they still aren't great like the 360 was, they are mostly good to almost great. like Indy.

I agree competition is important, but give me something else than this big trillionaire monopolistic gafam as a third competitor.

Xbox is already a zombie division. By the standard Economic theory the very existence of Xbox Division is an abomination and skewers the market away from efficiency. Xbox doesn't make money and would normally go away on its own, but it is artificially kept around and thus, stops anyone else from taking a crack at it. Xbox need to go because it has not earned the right to live.
Of course a zombie division tell me who has the most games and publishers between Sony and Xbox who has been giving there customers Hella value between Gamepass and PSN ???? And Xbox gross billions of dollars otherwise they would shut it down not forge ahead with new hardware and games ….

Well, considering how much they spam "treat others the way they want to be treated,"
lol... I made a thread about that. I still see this stupid thing when I fire up my Xbox.

Competition for a good and we need to buy Xbox products.

The competition effect is already working great as can be seen by MS raising prices across the board. I'm obviously being sarcastic, but they did this while losing ground (in different ways) to both Sony and Nintendo. What do you think would happen if they were the sole provider of gaming products? This is a rhetorical question, of course, because one thing I've noticed is Xbox victim types never want to have an actual honest conversation about the criticism MS receives.

As well, it's kind of sad that you are not the first person to suggest MS is owed purchases of Xbox products. Thankfully, it's not a widespread notion but it's still peak delusion.

You might be equating people laughing at their mistakes and mocking their stupid decisions as wanting them to fail. Consumers want to support a corporation's product because it's good, not because they feel obligated to.

And you might be equating yourself with everyone else that actually do want to see MS fail. They've blatantly admited it. It's console warring, brand loyalty _____ insert many other tribal reasons here.

Because Microsoft never enters a market with the intention of just competing. Their goal is always to monopolize a market and the moment they do they make Nintendo and Sony look consumer friendly.

I'm happy to be in the timeline where Windows Phone and Xbox is following it.

The image I have of MSFT in the gaming space is them focusing on everything but games.

While, in contrast, the image of Nintendo in my head is them focusing on games and little else.

MSFT is busy making sure you can play anywhere, talk to anyone, have b/c back to the stone age, etc. But ... the games part? We'll get to that.

NIntendo is busy squeezing out new original games. And they wake up and look around once in awhile and notice oh online is a thing that looks like it is going to stick, we'll get to that. Oh ....players are talking with friends. ok we'll look at that eventually.

Which mentality wins out?

How do you want Xbox to be a success when its parent company is running by a retards and idiots that is releasing all their new and old games on the competition platform ?

How do you want the Xbox to be a success when MS it self is advertising other hardware and calling a TV / a PC / handheld that run windows an Xbox and devaluing the Xbox hardware it self ?

MS is killing the Xbox not the gamers. We gave them a chance during the 360, started awesome then crapped their pants .

We gave them a chance during Xbox one with that useless Kinect but we still did buy it and we bought titanfall etc … 2 years later they fucked their fans and started releasing all their games on pc .

Fine people swallowed that . PC is windows and windows is MS make sense right ? If someone wants high end Xbox games can play on pc which belong to windows . But nope let's release it on steam too and not support our own store with exclusives …
Fine whatever lets buy the Xbox series x sounds like a good console…. 2 years later AGAIN they fucked their fans by telling them the console you bought to play Xbox games on, these games will be released also on PlayStation 5 while these guys on PlayStation console that you didn't buy will enjoy their PlayStation exclusives and Xbox games too while you as an Xbox fan will be do not get these PlayStation games on Xbox.

Watch the next Xbox After 2 years of release, MS will fuck their fans by telling them they give up and will pull the plug on the console half way in

If anyone Is fucking Xbox it's retards in the management . Not their fans . Their fans mostly left and moved on long time ago

Not a single reason to own the next Xbox over the PlayStation 6 for these people with limited budget or just don't want to spend too much money on gaming pc.

Let me rewind so my comment isn't taking out of context: I was responding to the person who said it would only be worse for the PlayStation gamers if Xbox left . I see things way different Xbox has actually held back the industry when it comes to controllers inputs, IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) accelerometers , gyros & other sensors that are in just about everything now besides Xbox controllers .

Gyro Aiming is actually considered superior to thumbsick by a lot of people but it's an option instead of games being built around it .

On the bright side Xbox is rumored to finally include this stuff in the next controller so it will finally become standard across the board & devs can treat it like a standard input.

The Playroom on PS4 had a game where you run & throw ninja stars using the touchpad on the DualShock 4 but no one attempted to make real games like that , Astro's Playroom also used the touch pad & other sensors to roll around & even bowl on a level but we didn't get a Super Monkey Ball type game built around this .

Devs are not so creatively bankrupt that they couldn't come up with new gameplay ideas using these features but they know they will have to get it past the publisher who will ask "how will you play it on other platforms?"

Games like GTAVI should let you walk around a carnival / amusement park & let you play the games with the DualSense features but they will most likely try to keep things pretty even between the platforms.

I was an Xbox guy for their first two generations. I didn't want them to fail.

At this point, it isn't that I "want them to fail" exactly. It's more like I enjoy seeing them get comeuppance, just desserts for bad decisions.

MS's Xbox is an American company and we need to keep jobs here in the US. For some reason everyone here wants MS to fail and make PS the only player in the console market. This would be extremely bad for everyone.

Also, Xbox gave us Xbox Live, GamePass and Halo. Without those, who knows where we would be.

Competition for a good and we need to buy Xbox products.
Because there are actually people , I mean look at the amount here, who are more than "fans", they are Stan's. As I've said I've. EVER understood that mentality. I love video games. I don't care what harwdware it's on. I always get em all so I'm covered for whatever I want to play, or where a particular game might play or lol a bit better on one over the other, or simply where my friends are playing certain games.

I'd never wanted Microsoft to fail, but when they decided to buy Activision and Bethesda, all I wanted is for them to become a third party publisher.
I don't hate them, I just prefer Sony, Nintendo and Valve. Other than the Forza Horizon franchise, I don't really like their exclusives, I used to love Halo and Gears on the 360, but anything after that is mid to poor IMHO. As for Microsoft being an American Company, I'm sorry, that don't even come into consideration when I buy anything, I just want the best product for the best price, I don't care if its Chinese, Japanese or American. At the end of the day, they are global brands, and they employ people all over the world.

lol... I made a thread about that. I still see this stupid thing when I fire up my Xbox.

Xbox should take its own advice, because it treats me like a soulless revenue cow who doesn't care when their forced updates crash my computer mid-session and then force it into an endlessly-looping restart pattern. That's not how I want to be treated. And I have this sneaking suspicion they know this, and simply don't care.

Paid Xbox astroturfers were annoying to deal with 24/7 until the moment Xbox went third party.

I imagine there were busier times than others. I'll always remember the dramatic reveal (ie. self-own) of Florian Mueller during the ABK acquisition thread.

I wonder what tune the OP and other like-minded xbox enthusiasts were singing in the MS acquisition thread. When MS was attempting to buy up the entire gaming industry and end all of their competition.

You absolutely can blame gamepass for it.. once you get used to not buying games, thats how you live, maybe if something like GTA comes out or some universally praised game, you go the extra mile, but outside of that you just wait for the "eventually" gamepass release.
More to the story than just GP IMO. But I still completely agree with your argument. It's human nature to not buy cows when the milk is "free." I bet everyone on this forum knows someone who put off marriage that probably would not have 50+ years ago. And we probably all (or almost all) see less movies in theaters thanks to streaming. Sure I'll still see movies in theaters from time to time, but every single movie I am interested in now gets judged on the "pay for theater or wait for streaming scale."

Well Im not going so much to theaters because most movies has been shit.. hollywood is on its own downward spiral for some time now... but thats another conversation

I bought a XSX to play games I could not on PS5. Then MS ported the games to PS5. Turns out I never needed the Series X as they removed a key advantage. I wasted my money. Another way to say it, is MS tricked me into wasting my money with false marketing.

That is why I will not trust them again and don't care if they fail.

However, I am not emotionally invested in their failure. I would have a laugh but don't really care.

My criticism of the things they do is 100% fair as is my criticism of Nintendo and Sony. MS just does more dumb shit lately so they get more criticism.

Edit: Also I forgot about the astroturf social media guys. That is really what grinds my gears. It isn't that they are hating on the competition but rather that they assume I'm dumb enough to fall for it and also that there are poor people out there dumb or naïve enough to believe their bullshit. Negative astroturf campaigns should be offensive to everyone under any circumstance. Only a cynical misanthrope creates and funds these things and they are fucking terrible. I was disappointed to see it coming back with the AMD story recently, I'm worried they paid up for another year of this bullshit. Astroturfers are the absolute worst kind of paid shill.
