i only really have 2 nit-picks with the movie.

1. other jaegers didn't matter, pretty much just Gypsy and Striker did everything. would have liked to see Crimson Typhoon and Cherno live up until the final battle, to be killed by the category 5 kaiju, would have showed how dangerous a cat-5 is.

2. Its established that gypsy's head can detach from its body. was really hoping at the end that the head would launch off and out the portal as the body explodes. instead we get some escape pods we didn't know existed up until the very end. would have liked if some part of the jaegers survived the battle, even if its just the head.

besides that i loved the movie, really hope it makes enough to justify a sequel. also that theme song is amazing. was humming it all the way home from the theater.

At the same time some would have complaints about the head having a propulsion system of its own that we didn't know about. Escape pods just seem like a standard thing to me so it didn't bother me much. I was actually surprised they didn't pull the "my escape pod's jammed!" trope at the end.

I have to say I was a little disappointed in the lack of screen time for Cherno and Crimson. They got wiped out pretty fast and I honestly thought they would get more screen time.

Maybe it's the difficulty of giving each jaeger their own individual styles that would warrant more screen time. Cherno punches things just like the Gypsy and Striker. Crimson's special is dunking things but you don't really need to see that more than once. I suppose there might not be much you can do to differentiate the slow, lumbering mechs that jaegers are though.

The way the Cherno went down was pretty nice though.

If I had to pick two points of interest in regards to the fights that I'd have changes, they'd be:

1) Killing off Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon both in the first big battle seemed overkill. Would have liked to have either a battle with both in action and survive, or one dies, before the big climatic battle we see in the film. Former option would have been good: some Cherno and Crimson action with survival, then both biting it in one battle.

2) The actual climax was a bit flat compared to the aforementioned battle. For what it was hyped up to be it seemed to be a bit one dimensional in action, probably because they were stuck on the bottom of the ocean. Didn't help that the Cat-5 was a blink-and-miss it monster. The two Cat-4s did more damage and made a bigger impression. Would have liked this final battle to start above the ocean, Cat-5 made a real big deal with some intense shit going on, the battle climaxing at the bottom of the ocean and the movie continuing as it did.

Yeah, I was like "Holy shit!" when it popped up and seemed to tower over the jaegers, but then just ending up being another swimmer, just a bit larger. Was totally hoping for a David and Goliath showdown there. The second battle was much better since there were no other tricks for them to pull out. Already got the blades out and the heartburner attack.

I was actually hoping that they'd get baby kaiju to help out during the final battle or something completely ridiculous, since it did seem that they could have done it and it would have worked. I mean the liberal use of other tropes from the genre made it to release, why not that one?

also, what happened to this guy?

yeah, i suppose. still think it would have been cool to have the head rocket off. but i called them nit-picks rather than actual problems, cause ultimately the movie was still great.

im not positive, but i think thats the robot in the flashback scene, the one that kills the giant enemy crab.

I would assume destroyed during the news report clips about how all jaegers but the fabulous four were wiped by kaijus.

Oh yeah + points for making the HK shatterdome sound like a HK subway.

Ah you're right.

Coyote Tango, piloted by Stacker Pentecost and his co-pilot Tasmin Sevier, defeated the Kaiju Onibaba in Tokyo. A battle witnessed time and again in flashbacks by one survivor, Mako Mori. After Tokyo events the Jaeger was finally retired.

I was too busy being blinded by the silly and obvious Stacker reveal.

Goddamn what a fantastic thrill ride. But shit, Cherno and Typhoon go down like a bunch of massive chumps. T__T. I also wanted more of the hot Russian pilot.

How am I supposed to watch another action movie ever again?

This is like trying to watch another anime mecha movie after Gurren Lagann

Really amazing action scenes in this movie.

The plot wasn't great (much of the work done by Charlie Day's character should have been done years ago), but there was more than one character in this movie that I liked. Considering how inept the summer blockbusters this year have been at portraying likeable characters, I view that as a major success.

Some of the fights were downright mindblowing. This movie will lose most of its charm on a TV with no heavy surround sound system though.

Amazing movie. My favorite action movie in years I think. Just one problem nagging at me is why they don't use the swords all the time. Maybe not against armor tough monsters, but most of their faces seem vulnerable enough.

I liked how the Jaegers would just pull weapons out of random places

I also liked how the Kaiju did the exact same thing

It actually makes perfect sense

That's mid-credit. Main thread said there was something dedicated to Ray Harryhausen and Ishirō Honda post.

Ah, I left after that scene. If there is actually another scene at the end I would like to know what it is as well. A dedication may in fact just be a dedication though (like words saying "this film dedicated to").

Left myself, sadly. Curious as to what exactly it was past the general description too.

"Elbow rocket to his face!"

"Let's pull out our sword! OUR CHAINSAW SWORD!"

"Lol humans. I gotz pulsar blasts"

I wanna see a sequel where the humans, after putting so much into fighting the Kaiju, get bored and make Jaegers again where they have international fighting rings pitting country against country

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Evangelion-style launches would be very difficult to test without breaking a Jaeger, so I can see why they stuck to basics.

i guess the helicopters also doubled as the jaeger's eye in the sky?

gundam fight ready go

I freaking loved the movie. Freaking amazing Daikaiju busting things up, the Jaegers badly attempting to stop them (Except for OP Gipsy Danger), the kaiju-loving scientist... I loved it all.

I wish Cherno Alpha would've had a bigger part in the movie, and I would've loved to see the battle scene between Idris Elba's character and that giant enemy crap
ATTACK IT'S WEAK SPOT FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE
kaiju, but oh well.

As for the final after credits 'scene', it wasn't a video or anything. It was a deep kaiju growling sound. It immediately reminded me of Godzilla, but I'm not sure if that's what it was meant to be.

Legendary is fianacing Godzilla which will be released next year. Jaegers will appear in the film and give him a beating.

This is now my favorite movie. This movie seems like it was just tailor made for me.

"Oh you like Gundam? Here ya go! Oh, you enjoy Charlie Day? Have some of him too! Idris Elba? Why not! Balls to the wall action with aliens? Hell yes."

The biggest rise out of me came from pulling out the giant ass sword and the command for it literally being "sword" and not some bullshit technical name for it or something. This movie was all that I hope it would be.

Only disappointment was getting no poster. :(

Also, for a premiere my theater was surprisingly empty. None of my friends wanted to see this movie but all of them walked out of the theater loving it.

Just saw 10 PM showing. Fucking loved it. The fight in the middle....damn, was that tense! TENSE! That is what is missing from videogames/movies/tv shows nowadays. TENSION! I was on my damn seat, feeling helpless as the jaegers got torn apart. Then Gipsy shows up. Mrm-hrm, baby. Hero moment.

I can't even put together coherent, adult thoughts. I loved this. I hope it rocks the box office.

While I found Charlie Day's character tolerable, his partner was the worst. That character was so bad.

And his "big" discover seemed to be a basic exponential relation between the kaijuu appearances? And he took up several chalkboards and who knows how much time for that..?

If they had done that in addition to the "I have to detonate it manually!" trope it would have been serious overkill, ahah.

I would have liked more screen time for the other two mechs, but I was fine with it. It just leaves potential for a Cherno Alpha or Crimson Typhoon backstory comic series or cartoon. Yesssssss

I liked this movie a lot.

I loved how it was revealed that these aren't random rampaging idiot monsters, but aliens with an actual plan. It made that final scene where the alien leaders look in terror at Gypsy Danger exploding that much sweeter.

Come on, all that love for Cherno Alpha and none for the badass looking chick that piloted it? Hnnng. Dat blonde. She looked so fearsome that she couldn't possibly be a waifu. I'd have to be the waifu.

Their reactions are priceless, mainly because the movie implies they react though their faces don't show it. Out of context, it looks a bit chilling.

Not only was she badass, she was badass and still found time to put on her lipstick and look all good.
