I have laughed at movies, I have cried at movies, but this movie made me say "Holy shit." out loud in the theater.

The second fight scene has to be the best action scene ever done in cinema. From the destruction of two jaegers to the random awesome sword never mentioned before, this blew me away like nothing else.

Im so glad they didn't spoil the wings in the trailer. such an "oh shit" moment in an already great fight.

The swords were so powerful in the movie, why didn't they used it in the beginning of the fight?

They only started using it a lot after the flying creature.. it kind of bugged me a lot.

Yeah I think I said holy frak out loud when the Russian Jaeger was ripped apart

Loved it. So much fun, something that so many blockbusters have forgotten about over the last few years.

I'm glad the "canceling the apocalypse" line wasn't the corniest in the film.

My eyes did roll out of the back of my head after the KAIJU let off the EMP disabling the Yeagers. The American mech still works. It's not digital it's analogue, nuclear powered bloody awful. Still, it got them back into the fight (and it was a glorious fight).

The "it's analog" was really, really stupid. I wish they hadn't even tried with the techno-babble.

Also up there is the love of pure metal over alloys. It made no sense, and I don't know WHY they kept harping on it.

While I was willing to ignore it, because it was an actual theory about stegosaurus...twenty years ago, the "two brains like dinosaurs" definitely made some of my friends wince.

(I found myself wondering "okay, when do I get to see those sweet ass robots beat up some monsters?" far too much during the filler period between the first and second fights.)

Also, I have to agree that the Typhoon and Cherno were completely wasted. They just dropped way too quickly, and didn't really raise the stakes in my opinion. (They felt more like fodder than anything else. I really wish they had managed to drop one themselves, so it could feel like they at least contributed SOMETHING.)

The only quibble I have is where after American Jaeger beats up the king Kong and other kaiju, it is repaired so quickly and sent back into battle.

On the other hand I like how it wasn't your typical.movie ending it with a kiss. I was pleasantly surprised because they treated her not too much differently than if she was a man. Rinko I mean

So how did anyone think that building wall would work? Seriously..

Also, did the portal move around? If not, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to just build your defenses there, instead of randomly place them around every Pacific facing nation.

Overall, I thought it was a good movie.

the anti kaiju wall was the dumbest thing ever. I was expecting some super high tech wall, but it just seems like your typical dam wall or something.

Was disappointed in the lack of much fight out of russia and china, they really did have the cooler mechs. America was fine though, glad it had more than a few extra gimmicks around in that. Rocket elbow was great lol. Having the guy yell it out and glados respond made me shiver.

A lot of the movie made my shiver. Must see in IMAX.

When the marshall mentioned the protag (Did he even have a name? don't remember) fought solo before, was it just about his brief moment solo after his bro died, or was he also a veteran mk1 pilot?

Was the Gipsey Danger the same mecha as the one in the beginning? Has a similar head and weaponry but couldn't tell if it was a same model or something else.

How do the jaegers walk on the ocean anyways? Are they like submarines?

I loved that they killed everyone and everything so quickly, left me with little to no expectations for how it would end.

And I don't understand people saying the climax was lesser than its parts before, I mean, fucking UNDERWATER VOLCANO PORTAL DUEL CAT 5 showdown!

Becket was not ready for a new partner until Mako showed up. And after the first 'drift' almost ended in disaster, they were forced to sit on the sidelines. Add the fact they deployed to save Striker from the two Kaiju and you barely have time to test the new toys out.

Well we're talking about a 300 mile wall and the Jeager program was preparing to shut down.
It was an act of desperation.

To be frank I was just a wee bit dissapointed. Nobody really fought that huge Category 5. Striker nuked it, and then Gipsy Danger tackled it, stabbed it and burnt it through with it's reactor.

But everything before more than made up for it

Protag was Becket. It was just him piloting the Gypsy solo to the Alaskan shore, but it was pretty significant given the neurological stress. And no, he only piloted the mk3 Gypsy with his brother from what I gathered.

Yeah, it was the same mech with refurbishments like being pure metal with no alloys.

I have no clue. Magic, I guess.

I assume it's like a submarine. They close all the hatches and just do it...with the magic on Robots.

was the final kaiju that was fought going down into the volcano a class 4 or 5? don't remember if it was bigger than the gipsy or not. You didn't really get a good look at the class 5 anyhow.

It did seem like the jaegers were more effective underwater... or was it because they were finally using their swords?

Even though i'm chinese, i really did wish the russian one was around longer. that piston action punching... soo good.

If they ever got around to doing a sequel, i do hope it would be a more team deathmatch situation with like 4 jaegers.

You know, the whole co-pilot trial sequence made me wonder why the gipsy didn't have a bo-staff type of weapon or an actual katana. Would that have been too silly? And there barely seemed to be any correlation between the protag's fighting style and how he pilots the mecha.

I was gripped to my chair during that second battle. Was so fucking epic.

Oh man, this was amazing. I need more Striker Eureka in my life (im not even Australian!)

The characters arent as bad as people said either. I had feels when The Eureka Pilot said goodbye to his father.

Just thinking about sharing your brain with someone is pretty nuts.

I tried to refrain from watching too many trailers after the reveal one, so that I didn't get the movie spoiled for me. I'm very GLaD
=P
that I did too. I lot of parts caught me by surprise, which just added to the movie.

Has anyone read the Tales From Year Zero prequel graphic novel? Is it any good?

I wasn't that surprised by the Kaiju when it broke out its wings. The trailers had shown parts of that fight if you were keen enough to catch it. It was definitely an "Oh, crap." moment, but not mind-blowing as some are saying here.

Stop thinking with logic! Good points.

I only watched the very first trailer so mist if it was surprise. Year zero is written by Travis beach man so it should be good

The Tales from Year Zero comic is pretty decent for a backstory etc. I liked it and learned more about the PacRim world. You learn that Stacker's co-pilot died from cancer and when he adopted Mako.

Just got back, the movie is really great. Hollywood finally does a mecha/monster movie right.

This is what happens when a talented director makes a blockbuster. I feel a lessor creator would not of made it this good. Well done Del Toro.

I'm thinking of how much better it would be if the Australian dad was killed in the fight, the son was injured and had to swallow his pride to act as support in the war room, and Elba had to solo Striker Eureka.

The Elba/Son combo felt like it didn't have much going for it. They drifted like it was no big deal, compared to the bond the other pilot pairs shared.

And then how cool it would be if the final Kaiju was huge, in the sense that the ratio of category-5 to jaeger was the same as normal kaiju to human.

AND THEN how it would be great if they brought back the chasing the rabbit thread, and had both characters give into their desire for vengeance at the same time, and that somehow working out for them.

(I love having to double check to make sure I'm posting in the spoiler thread)

I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry when the reason behind the Kaiju invasion was literally lifted verbatim from Independence Day...

I was hoping something like this would happen, so I was a bit disappointed in the reality. His illness and inevitable sacrifice was really played up, so I was at least expecting him to force eject the co-pilot and do solo combat underwater to go out in a blaze of glory.

On a side note, I also the "holy shit" moment when Otachi whipped out its wings. I only watched the reveal trailer, so I knew almost nothing going into the cinema.

Agreed. The wings reveal, the take up to space, and then Gypsy Danger slicing the guy with a sword from literally out of nowhere. I just kept screaming, "Holy crap. Holy CRAP. HOLY CRAP."

Saw this last night. It was alright, I suppose. The amount of time between the prologue battle and the next battle was way too long. I guess I expected more. Though I have to wonder how people would have reacted if this movie had Bay's name attached to it. Edit: It also didn't help that this was really "Pacific Rim: The Story of Gipsy Danger (with a cameo by Striker Eureka)". I knew the Russian and Chinese Jaegers were gonna get bodied but I didn't expect them to go out that fast. They came nowhere close to shining. And shit, where was Coyote Tango? Was that the one Pentecost was using?

Yeah, but they were being controlled by the alien leaders, who were the intelligent ones. I just liked that it went the extra mile to make them not-random bashing monsters. They had a purpose and a plan. I loved that.
Their purpose and plan was the generic colonize/exterminate/eliminate plan. I agree with Zebra, trying to explain why they're doing what they're doing was superfluous, especially when the only shot in the film of their supposedly "intelligent" leaders is of them looking dumbfounded when Raleigh and Mako drop in.

Loved that scene. Especially right before the nuke went off, great middle finger moment.

Elbow rocket, thats all

reminded me of independence day :)

Was i the only one confused with the final fight? I mean it must be because it was underwater, but it took a while before i realize it wasn't the strike eureka that samurai sliced that one kaiju.

Those 2 mechas look a bit too similar at a glance :/

I have no idea how they fit rockets, a chain sword and a plasma cannon into each arm.

But I don't care

swords seem easy to store (kinda like soul caliber ivy sword), storing seems plausible, but not having anything break from one of the weapons or w/e activating, or from the robot repetitively punching a guy is kind of amazing lol.

surprised that no jaeger had brass knuckles with all the punching.

Seeing how effective the swords were, it doesn't make sense that it isn't some kind of standard issue weapon on all jaegers.

Yeah, this really bothered me while watching the movie. It just seems stupid that they'd punch these things instead of just taking out the sword or that plasma cannon. Just "check their pulse" first thing instead of smacking them around causing all that collateral damage to the city.
