Papa Johns CEO wants to raise Pizza prices in order to offset Obamacare costs

Just saw this thread and I have a somewhat related story. I've looked into Obamacare enough to get a basic understanding, but not all the details. Anyway.

I work for Bob Evans, if you don't know it's a retail chain family dining restaurants with an emphasis on breakfast, especially bob evans brand sausage. It has come down from the corporate office that all Store Managers should no longer add full time employees to the roster and that all partially-benefited employees should be scheduled less than 29 hours a week. They are to try and force all long time full-time employees to work all the busy shifts, no more getting saturday and Sunday off if you've been serving at the same store for thirty years. Personally, I find it appalling. This company has been making record profits with less total revenue this year. Benefits are continually stripped away from employees. And they send out propagandist movies to the employees. This is a very real example of the failing of trickle down economics in my eyes.

LOL this guy!

Youll give away 2 million pizzas for free, then do this? PEYTON MANNING SHOULD NOT HAVE THANKED YOU PAPA!

lol

As someone who works in fast food, everyone here seems to think .15-.20 cents isn't a big deal, but you'd be surprised how many American such a small thing impacts. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've had customers yell at me about how we're "ripping them off" cancel their order and drive off because the price of a value meal went up by .11 cents (from 4.99 with tax to 5.10 with tax). Papa Johns also already has the most expensive pizza of the major pizza chains (pizza hut, dominoes, papa johns, and little ceasars).

probably because it tastes better than the other chains. i'm an expert, i'm from brooklyn. little ceasars i would eat only if the other option was starve to death, since i like living.

Papa Johns is pretty bad. They are also another chain that consistently puts pepperoni underneath what little cheese is on the pizza.

The only Papa joint thats worthwhile is Papa Murphys. i remember getting my first pizza there. So much pepperoni on the pizza that there was barely one spot on the pie where the cheese showed. You go to pull a slice and the cheese just keeps coming until you tear/cut it off. Plus because you bake it at home it always piping hot. So good.

Pizza Hut >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the rest of the chain crap >>>>>>>> Little Ceasars

You people are smoking crack. Round Table >>>>>>>>>>>> All other major Pizza chains. And Papa Johns has to be some of the worst Pizza I've ever had!

Regardless, I prefer the small mom-n-pop Pizza places over any major chain.

Allow me to amend:

Most local places >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Pizza Hut >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the rest of the national chain crap >>>>>>>> Little Ceasars

Thought that was obvious.

Pizza hut has edible crust (Domino's et al do not) and puts the peperoni on top of the cheese and crisps it up nicely. That elevates it above the other chains.

Never had Round Table. Never even heard of it.

Regardless, I prefer the small mom-n-pop Pizza places over any major chain.

Me too.

Round Table is only in 7 states. But anyways like you said pretty much all mom-n-pop pizza's are better than any chain.

Just pathetic that people are blaming Obamacare for stuff like this. Corporations show no boundaries for greed. Make record profits? Lets further strip wages and benefits from employees

I am lucky to have traveled to cities with thriving Italian-American and Italian-Canadian populations that have reputable Pizzerias that you can opt for instead of the crappy chains.

Going to NYC in February, I will be increasing my Pizza research and enjoyment

I wish he would have said he was charging more so that people don't have to tip. More people would be on board for it.

Doesn't look like it will be coming out of employees according to OP:
Those added costs, he promised, will make their way to consumers

I'll take Dominos over Papa Johns already, so all this just makes my decision easier (not that I eat chain pizza much anyway)

I've never had Papa Johns, but holy crap! Really that bad?
Never order ham or bacon at Papa Johns. ive had on two different occasions bits of pork fat as a topping. Not a couple pieces but a hundred plus little chunks of hard fat each time. The place is garbage.

No. Pizza Hut...no.

This is hardly anything official, but some of my friends were posting about boycotting Papa John's for cutting employee hours just a couple of weeks ago on Facebook.

Also, just because:

Papa John's > Domino's >>>>> Pizza Hut

I don't eat cheese so no comments there, but they all have mediocre sauce, so it comes down to crust, and Pizza Hut falls WAAAAY behind in that respect.

I used to get Papa John's all the time cause their site let me get like unlimited toppings on their specialty pizzas for like $9.

Papa Johns in England was a disgusting, sweet mess. We used to get them 50% off because our friend worked there and we would still order Dominos. It's much better in America, but we go with Dominos just because they are $8 for a 2 topping large and you cannot fucking beat that price

Oh don't you dare pull this shit. You may well be an expert, but it's not because you're from Brooklyn. New York doesn't have a monopoly on good pizza.

Libs lose again. John Schnatter says he's going to give all his employees health care:

Papa John’s, like most businesses, is still researching what the Affordable Care Act means to our operations. Regardless of the conclusion of our analysis, we will honor this law, as we do all laws, and continue to offer 100% of Papa John’s corporate employees and workers in company-owned stores health insurance as we have since the company was founded in 1984.”

See? Obamacare wasn't needed after all. The guy probably would have given his employees health care quicker if not for having to comply with all the regulations in the HCR bill.

Want my workers to show up for work healthy to help me take money out of society but I sure ain't going to pay to make sure they stay that way? How are they gonna do it? Who the fuck cares as long as I get mine. If society decides to do it, I'll scream about how my hands are being forced to do things I don't want to do. Who am I?

An Ass-hat

either fix your troll meter or get out. and Brooklyn has the best spots anyway.
cripes, how can you people choose chain pizza over a local place?

Not a troll - I think the belief that all good pizza comes from New York is certifiably B.S. The city is home to great pizza, and some of the best to be sure, but good pizza is being made elsewhere every day. Better pizza, in all likelihood. Unless you've had pizza in every home in every country on every continent, put your delusion in check. New York makes "good" pizza. "Best" pizza is totally subjective.

I don't want to take the thread off-topic so I'm leaving it at that.

I was specifically talking to the post I quoted although at one point it seemed papa johns was going to encourage cutting hours to below the full time status threshold.

So what happens if all the long-timers quit? I would hope that, for one, you get annual leave (non-sick leave) payed to you in a lump sum and then they have to spend even more money to train new employees while their competitors are flooded with great employees who know how to do the job with minimal training. Not to mention the switch of consumers that would occur if made public and the addition switch that would occur with incompetent employees.

What are these propagandist movies?

A DVD mailed to all employees talking about how they invest in their employees and continue to develop incentives to encourage employees to work harder. It's really just a power point presentation explaining why not allowing employees to smoke cigarettes on company property, whether in uniform or not, is a good thing. And how even though they take away Christmas bonuses and quit giving all employees sausage sampler packs every year they are continuing to improve the incentives we have for working for the company.
Just a lot of corporate spin, attempting to justify and rationalize the removal of employee benefits.

I have said exactly this many times. There's been theories floating around that a lot of the new executives and share holders are interested in turning the business into maximum profitability and then selling off before any potential buyers realize how it's been run into the ground. I"m not one for conspiracy theories though. So what I can say is that in my area at least, there's not many options for morning restaurant workers. It's one of those how far can they push everyone scenarios. The edge is much farther away than it should be. I can only imagine that if I had worked for a company I loved and believed in for thirty years, yet treated me terribly for the last five, (once new CEO took office, Bob Evans died, etc) I would find it very difficult to do anything else.
