PC gamers claim Windows 11's Gaming Copilot is capturing gameplay for AI training by default – but what it's actually doing is spoiling performance

Currently Windows 11 is forcing you to switch.

I keep getting these linux gaming feeds almost weekly on youtube and I have yet to see a >15 games average where linux gets the edge in gaming. Why would I switch.

I don't understand Windows10 truthers either. Win11 is just updated windows 10 with a bit of new ui. You can degut it just the same as windows 10, you don't need ms account, you can uninstall stuff like onebox or copilot.

And there's HDR. Windows10 has shitty implementation of HDR that barely works. If you want HDR you need to switch to Win11.

Okay depend on someone else's script to degut it, find the latest workaround to not need an ms account, uninstall some deeply awful services... and we are talking about out of the box? What exactly did you have to do when you took your steam deck out of the box?

Only by them trying to deny security updates to me. Which i fixed by extending my updates to 3 more years. And it's not like i personally care that much about those.

Now if games and programs stop working in Windows 10, then i will be forced to switch to something else.

Linux is a vastly superior experience to Windows 10.

y

yea MS is crazy lol, they redownload things you delete when an update comes out. also resets your settings that had.
I remember ever since windows 8 I always hit "customise" on my privacy settings so I can turn off their data collection but the damn thing kept trying to change my settings after every update.

No

Are you stupid or something?

Read your statement "forcing you to switch", no not really, a shitload and I mean a shitload of peoples currently are on it and daily.

Who's forcing me to go Linux? Absolutely nobody

Almost all posts I've seen of you in the past week is just nonsense.

23k steam games work in proton by the way. Youtubers can't show all the games where Linux has edge.

Oh yeah, I bet that niche indie farm sim runs really well on Linux

Somehow when you get more than a few games average, windows wins in performance .

Sounds like I'm forced to switch! /s

still on windows 10 but can't you just debloat using chris titus's or similar debloat scripts to take care of copilot/recall/etc?
Yes. People tend to exaggerate a lot when this kind of news comes up. Some say that removing components from Windows is an improvised workaround that not everyone knows how to do. But isn't using Linux for gaming already an improvised setup by default? The learning curve to move away from Windows is much higher than simply double-clicking a .bat file.

You are the one trying to deflect. Heroic Launcher is the most simplest launchers. No one expects you to do any tinkering. Even in Lutris, I literally showed you images. I don't know why you are trying so hard to deflect that Lutris needs tinkering. These are out of the box experiences. Tinkkering is done by the community. Everything works with a click.
Then I will draw to you. Every freaking game outside launchers needs tinkering to download Proton/Wine, choose the best Proton/Wine version and pray if any works correctly, configuring DXVK, VK3D, glide/dgVoodoo. But of course you are too ignorant and keep saying "launchers launchers launchers" when there is a bigger gaming world outside launchers. 🤷‍♂️

Microsoft fanboys are something else. You literally have no problems with Windows 11, some of the issues are the topic of this thread. So many people are switching to Linux.

No one in Proton, ProtonGE, Lutris and Heroic Launcher team has to time to optimize daily Steam slop. But most good games work, except for some live service games that go out of their way to prevent Linux.

But hey you can cope that "its just indie farm sims".

There no games outside "launchers". You can ADD every single game to steam...if you want (and run it via proton). You can even add other launchers to steam. And Heroic/Lutris are doing the same. They are just a graphical interface for Proton.

Thats already done by the Proton, ProtonGE, Lutris and Heroic works community.

Also you are just making up scenarios now. Games that don't launch in any launchers? You just made that up right?

You can add AvP2 or BFME2 directly to Steam, Heroic and Lutris and they will work with just a double click??

Lol. Proton, Proton GE are just "runners" that Steam Lutris and Heroic uses to run DirectX games. Additional configurations on top of the runners exist and for some games it is necessary. Shows you barely uses Lutris, Heroic and Proton/Wine. 🤦‍♂️

You can add everything with an .exe file...yes. If it runs well it has to be seen. But I see no reason why it shouldnt run well.

Well ofcourse you would want the inferior spyware memory hog that is Windows 11.
Are you completely insane or something?

I use Windows 10. I explained to you why i don't want to use Linux. And i also explained to you that i'm never going to use Windows 11 and all the steps i took to keep Windows 10 instead.

See a doctor.

Peoples that post nonsense are something else

Gimme a Linux steamOS that performs better consistently over windows and I throw windows under the bus

All I see are whining about the OS and not the key thing, gaming.

I don't care if windows search engine sucks, are you for real? I've went through all OS during engineering school. Of course I know of it. I don't care the windows store sucks balls. Know why? For work I do not have a choice. All this search features and so on? Useless to me daily because I have no say.

At night on my gaming desktop PC?

I push a button, it gets to homescreen, I have 3 icons. Recycle bin, steam, Firefox.
Voila. I use it for nothing else. I just need gaming performance. I see even the most positive Linux gaming YouTube feeds than on average it's lower performance, I don't upgrade.

Supporting underdogs and sacrifice performance was cool when I was 15 years old and I supported AMD for 20 years in their rough period and was using all sort of branches of OS over the status quo. Now I just want to come home at night and choose between two icons.

ProtonDB tinkering pages are available for nearly all non native games, dude I have no time for this shit.

You literally have no problems with Windows 11,

I'm not even on windows 11?

And I posted in the thread before about my beef of using it at work?

some of the issues are the topic of this thread. So many people are switching to Linux.

You can't even answer basic questions, deflect deflect. It's your statement, not mine.

"So many peoples are switching to Linux", cute. That's like AMD on Reddit, you would think everyone has one but stats show otherwise.

Steam hardware survey shows Linux at pretty much a statistical error. By that logic macOS is on fucking fire comparatively.

Good for peoples who find alternative and can live with performance drops, still no explanations and likely never will be for "forcing peoples to switch over"

Right, so some games are better running on Linux (and I'm not denying that), but somehow all those channels that made the push to switch to Linux, as soon as they aggregated more than a dozen games somehow windows is ahead of performance.

How fucking odd

The day Linux has the latest releases perform on par or better than windows I switch over without a bat of the eye. What do you take me for? I don't give a fucking shit for windows in particular, I want the best performance for hardware I paid a lot of money in. To me it's just a means between pushing a power button and accessing steam. There's really nothing more to it.

One example, it seems Linux favors a lot more low power systems like portables, if I bought a PC handheld and that statement is mostly true for most games, I wouldn't switch over to windows, why would I sacrifice performance?

But all this back with your "forced to switch", let's not derail

Until Linus Torvalds comes into my home with a USB stick and a gun pointed at my head where I'll be forced to switch over..

No you can't. Some games will refuse to launch and those 2 games for example (and several EA games),requires installation because registry parameters.

But you are "installing" them via steam/proton. "setup.exe" is also an .exe file. ;) After installation you just tell steam that the new target .exe file is the file which is starting yr game (and not the installation .exe anymore).

A few games require some extra steps, but yeah I'd say 90% of my use cases have been successful. GOG games, other stuff like GZDOOM, my own stuff I make in Godot. Proton just eats that and makes it work without any issues, it's great.

All extra steps/tinkering that I keep saying that you have to do plus some old games will still refuse to launch no matter Proton or Wine version I try or have video bugs (hi Lego Batman, Wuthering Waves,...).

To add to it's blessings, a cool thing with older games is that you can replace the Proton layer with Luxtorpeda which is focused on replacing the original engine with something else that works better. For example, playing Morrowind through Luxtorpeda lets you enjoy OpemMW without having to do anything at all. Same for Arx Fatalis with Arx Libertatis, Blood with NBlood and so on.

edit: for those wondering here's a list with all the supported games: https://luxtorpeda-dev.github.io/packages

Lego Batman and Wuthering Waves have both a "gold" rating on protondb. Seems to work.

Lego Batman Epic Store version doesn't for me (has missing geometry and textures everywhere) and Wuthering Waves (and some other games) gives me black screen with sound only on video cutscenes (missing some codec. Nobara).

Do you use protonGE or steams proton only? I can only recommend to get yrself protonGE. It fixes alot of this codec/video cutscene stuff. And you can always switch than easily (in steam) between protonGE and steam proton...what works better.

I tried several Proton/GE/Wine versions. None worked so far.

TBH wanting to run games at peak performance is a perfectly valid reason to run Windows. For me it wasn't any large single issue that motivated me to switch to Linux. It was a death by a thousand cuts situation with Microsoft heaping change after change into the software that affected the way I use my computer. That and the baked-in Windows spyware and the fact that it's increasingly difficult to say that Windows represents the most stable, seamless gaming/general OS experience. Digital Foundry talks about some of these issues in a recent video:
