PC modding not possible for GTA 5?

So i'm not getting Deloreans, A-team vans, Ecto-1's and Jetpacks.......glad i've held off on the triple dip, Mods were my only justification for a 3rd copy

If valve, epic games , the arma devs etc etc had locked down modding in the 90s and 2000s the same way rockstar are doing today then the pc platform and gaming in general would only be a shadow of its current self.

If publishers want to play walled garden with their software then they can keep their shit on the walled garden console platforms.

So true, it's crazy what an impact it's had. In addition to all the things you said there are also all the game developers who got their start modding games, which is a lot of them.

edit: oh, and I might be wrong but I think the idea for Steam actually arose from Valve's desire to smooth out the patching process for CS. It wasn't "let's sell HL2 this way!" from the beginning. No CS, maybe no Steam.

yeah he does. dude's been crazy for years.
He's from Russia, they're very strict when it comes to homosexuality and it's illegal. This will definitely effect his views on the situation. It's not related to the fact that he's said he could end up taking his own life.

EDIT: Didn't realise this was 4 pages long and quoted from the front page. What have I missed?

Also, Rockstar is most definitely doing this due to GTA Online, it makes sense...

What he said at 4 makes me re-evaluate everything else he said before that because it sounds like its coming from the prism of depression and not an actual reasonable place.

GTAV will be modded to hell and back it just simply won't happen on day 1 is all and considering how much effort they put into GTA Online is doesn't surprise me.

Didn't it take a long ass time for the real GTA IV mods to start rolling out?
Can't expect these things to happen in the first week...

Yeah but people dont get how the files have changed.

With GTA 4 you had folders and files in them like:

\Grand Theft Auto IV\pc\textures\
\Grand Theft Auto IV\pc\models\cdimages\
\Grand Theft Auto IV\pc\audio\Sfx\

But with GTA 5 it's just a bunch of locked 1-3GB size .rpf files

I have seen this type of many, many bite-sized archives with disorganized assets scattered all over the place in several newer games. Including Pillars of Eternity. If this is some sort of new industry standard developers are moving towards, I don't really understand what is supposed to be better about it.

There's a bit of a difference in scale/complexity between CS and GTA V.

No reason to think Rockstar have done this just to be dicks. They clearly put a lot of effort into the port in general, so to think they've just snubbed modding out of laziness or pettiness doesn't really make much sense.

Except, you know, they did this shit repeatedly before? Yes, they are doing this just to be dicks. They have repeatedly broken GTA IV and San Andreas mods with patches. They go out of their way to do it, breaking mods that had no effect on multiplayer whatsoever.

Modders will find a way.

It was naive to think Rockstar would welcome modders with open arms. Hell, I'm pretty sure the PC delays were mostly security related.

Multiplayer GTA IV was modded so extensively. If the same thing happened to GTA:O, Rockstar would never sell any Shark cards or future dlc. Eventhough that may not be true, it is what they fear.

It will be a game of cat and mouse between Rockstar and modders once the encryption gets hacked. Rockstar sees modding as hacking and they will probably straight-up ban people using mods in GTA:O, just as they do to people who are hacking/modding on consoles.

They might be less harsh to people using mods in single player. Although, even singleplayer has rockstar cloud stuff that they might want to shield from modders.

Maybe modding will be possible in a few years, when the interest has died down and Rockstar North starts working on a new game.

Actually, wasn't some modding in GTA IV done in .rpf files?
You could edit them with SparkIV or OpenIV.
This gives me some hope that modding will be possible soon.

It was just an easy to find example of his online rants. There's more but I can't find it. He often said stuff about Rockstar which would get you permabanned on GAF in seconds.

He also often got mad at his fans when they couldn't figure out some settings or when other people tried to improve ENB. I think he got pretty mad about that iCEnhancer guy.

OP is complete bullshit. The main problem is that Boris can't (or doesn't) work with DirectX 10 or later. Modding GTA V has already begun, it's just that the ENB graphics mod won't be available because Boris doesn't do anything beyond DX9.

Well anyway I doubt its going to happen this time.

Why exactly.

GTAV on consoles capable of running unsigned code has mods that make changes to the .rpf files.

The .rpf files are all signed with a unique code. The 360 and PS3 versions have been found. It's only a matter of time until they PC version is found. The structure inside the .rpf might be different but not drastically.

GTAV will get mods. It's already got them on console. It's basically waiting on the .rpf key to be found.

The only reason I would've bought this is for modding. Not buying it now. Ive held off buying it now on last gen, current gen and now PC. I'm just not interested in it unless I can do crazy ass modding like in IV

People need to just be patient. Mods are indeed coming. The game just came out and files need to be decrypted. There are already SweetFX profiles out (You need to use Reshade for DX11). Also, trainers are already out as well.

Yeah I've already started using a reshade/sweetfx preset on it. Only problem is the loading at the beginning gets messed up so you have to disable the mod on game start up in the global settings and turn it on once you're in game (just assign it to a key).

They should have had at least some form of Workshop capability in place. When it saw that you activated anything from the Workshop, they could either deactivate it if you go to GTA Online, or even say that you can't play GTA Online until they are deactivated.

But yeah, one way or another, mods will come.

Kind of makes sense considering you can buy in game cash I guess...?
Hopefully they can crack that open though
You can buy in-game cash on the PC version? Because i looked yesterday cause i blew the first money on some weapons and the best available apartment and wanted to get like an armored car and a jet but saw 0 option to buy the shark money or whatever like on xbox/playstation.

Can off-line trainer use get you banned or anything? It gets tiring re-enterting all the cheat stuff on SP and since i already did the story stuff on ps3 and ps4 i like to just fuck shit up on SP.

In the end all it takes is a tool that deals with the obfuscation so you don't have to, and then you're right back at looking at the raw assets.

Unless the executables are hardcoded to look for some things, but that's always the case with games with no inherent modding support and it's still salvageable to varying degrees depending on the game.

Too early to say.

postprocess and memory injection is fairly different in implementation when compared to asset modification

I can't see why you would get banned for it on SP.

EDIT: To use trainers, you need to add a launch parameter (-scOfflineOnly), which will launch the game in offline mode.

While this is true, someone just needs to crack the encyption key for the .rpf files like what was done for 360 and PS3. I'm not worried about it.

I did and still think its possible. I've seen online modes getting modded into games that never even had an online mode originally.

yeah he does. dude's been crazy for years.

I really hope he doesn't still believe this, but sadly I doubt it since that post date was only almost two years ago. I will be avoiding installing his mods or supporting him in any way.

What I expected and dreaded but hoped wouldn't be the case because Rockstar's answer left room for it. Sucks. Mods is half the reason why I was planning on buying this game. Not sure if I'll bother now. Hope modders manage to circumvent Rockstar's bullshit.

There's editor tool's out already that can view inside the .rpf extensions

Granted these might be for consoles (or not) but I havent looked into it much since my JTAG 360 is broken but i bet they might work for the PC extension as well.

I don't see any wiggle room in their answer about mods:

Modding took off for GTA IV PC. What are you doing to support modding for V? Is there anything within the game that supports it?

Since GTA Online has such a massive and vibrant community, our primary focus is making sure that nothing detracts from that experience or has a negative impact on the overall community of players.

This is a shame because all the fun of GTA4 on PC is in the mods. ):
Why did they make it so difficult? Are they afraid it'll break the game and have modded footage ruin the reputation? If anything, it would make the game so much more popular for the modern day Youtube gamers to mess with.

Also that quote from that Russian modder is really upsetting. Seems like a very troubled person.

Rockstar didn't design GTA IV to incorporate mods either. We all know how that turned out. The purchased in-game money doesn't matter, a modded game will just have to be played offline. Hell...you even had to rollback drivers to get ENB working properly and initially could only have a physical copy for GTA IV.

It's just a matter of time.

It will happen in time.

The game literally just came out, lol.

Mod/glitch/trainer for single player will come out/happen.

Heck, a lot of us didn't even need one and glitched the console version. I can't be the only person that has 1.5-2 Billion dollars in all 3 single player character's bank accounts.

Rockstar has always blamed PC gaming for the Hot Coffee Bullshit. Blame Hillary or PS2 owners. Nobody gave a shit until ps2 players enabled it and Hillary Clinton decided to go all in with the soccer moms that were all aghast at the Hot Coffee mod.

Better performance, better visuals, more flexibility in input methods and steam sales are what got me buying PC versions. Not every PC game has a robust modding community on the level of Bethesda or old Bioware titles. In fact, most don't in my experience.

You must not play Capcom's PC games. The modding community is huge.

well, my interest in the PC version just plummeted.

Same. I played V to death on 360 when it first released, then shelved it and waited for the PC version for the inevitable mod explosion. This sounds really disheartening, though. I don't really care enough to buy it again just to play it with better graphics.

Life finds a way.

I am convinced Rockstar simply added a couple extra "hurdles" intentionally to keep the likes of Marvel/Disney from suing them if someone creates another Iron man/Hulk mod.

Even though Rockstar had nothing to do with those mods, Marvel/Disney is probably mad they ain't making any money off of it.
