Worst case scenario is you mount the wheel to a board using the mounting holes and then use quick grip clamps to clamp it to your desk wherever you like. You can even put little rubber grippy things on the bottom of the board to make it slide around less. I had to do this ages ago with a previous wheel and desk situation.
 
I'm starting to sound like a broken record now but man, going on the public "tourist" nordschleife servers in AC is still my favorite thing to do in sims. After about 100 or more laps (probably more than that over the years) of the green hell I've finally memorized the whole track so I can push most cars close to their limits with some confidence. It took me ages to learn all the corners after the carousel.

With all the different cars on the servers (I'm mostly playing on the non race car servers) it's probably the closest you can get to the real thing. 90% of the time slower cars will make room for you, especially when you're flashing your lights at them.

You can get in to some spontaneous battles between different cars too, I had some seriously cool laps against a NISMO GT-R last night while driving the same car, we were doing almost identical lap times.

All this makes me even more excited for the coming VR stuff, it's already a ton of fun with a TrackIR setup which helps alot with all the traffic on the track.

Trying to get used to a more mathematically correct FOV in AC. 28 degrees supposedly for 50" away from a 50" screen. It's all rather confusing looking. If I focus on the road ahead/AI cars, everything feels correct, but as soon as my eyes glance the small portion of the rendered dash, my brain gets confused and everything feels off. What does everyone else use? Correct or higher?

Good man. Getting that FoV dialed is important.

Firstly, bringing your FoV down to something that approaches "correct" can be quite the culture shock. It's an uncomfortable transition which provides little instant gratification. That said, being comfortable is important, and rigidly sticking to the calculation may not be what's best for you personally. I'd recommend you don't deviate too far though. +10° should be your maximum allowance.

Don't forget you also have "seating" controls too which allows you to move the seat forward/back/up/down. This always seems to be a point of confusion, but these are independent of FoV. If need be, use them to fine tune your PoV in the car.

I think it's fairly common for people to find additional speed and consistency when coming way down on their FoV, so hopefully you will as well. Once adjusted, I think you'd find it even more difficult to go back to super-wide angle view. The road ahead is so narrow, and corners look so far away. You'll wonder how you ever drove that way.

They did a great job with the art, as I knew they would. Their track guys are excellent, and the sim itself is underrated graphically. It's a terrific looking game.
 
A load cell brake and a more correct (narrower) fov improved my braking tremendously. Considered a triple screen setup for a while, but with VR being so close I decided against it. Having the trackir stuff helps alot in racing situations when you have a more narrow view of the track but I don't always end up using it.

No matter how 'correct' the FOV is, you're still staring at a flat panel, so it's fundamentally wrong anyway. My guess is that as your eyes relax into it, you begin to see the middle distance with the correct sense of scale, but then you glance at the dash, and it throws off your depth perception as it's still on the same 'plane' of focus, unlike reality. There's no solution to this (apart from VR), but you'll get used to it.

Doing triple screens properly is also super expensive. At a minimum you want high refresh rate screens. A good resolution is second. Then something like G-Sync is icing but still important none the less. All that requires a serious GPU like a 970 or higher.

I think I will only do triple screens when we are able to do 3x 3440x1440/144hz HDR G-Sync screens with triple Nvidia Titans (Pascal).

I did try initially pushing my virtual seat all the way to the back, but this felt odd when the car rotated into a corner, as if it wasn't turning on the correct axis, if that makes sense. I think I settled on the correct FOV plus about 8 degrees.

That is super overkill imo. So many wasted pixels. 1080p60 screens with decent latency is good enough.
 
I wish it was possible to run triples with lower quality/resolutions on the side panels. High IQ in the centre is a must, but I don't mind 480p in my peripheral vision.

I'm interested in this game, do you know if Automobilista will have visible driver's hands? It's really immersion-breaking not to have them, and it's the reason I didn't buy GSC yet.

Heh, peasant life isn't as bad as it seems, Pasko. :) I have triples that make do with none of that (1680, 60Hz, total cost $100), and while they probably belong in a museum, it's job done when it comes to alleviating the discomfort of racing with a narrow FoV. As great as high refresh rates, and gsync are, I wouldn't trade either of them for a single screen.

They're just holding the fort down for VR anyway which kills all the birds with all the stones (minus resolution).
 
Going triple screen for me is somewhere around a 400-500eur investment. Already have a 980 and one Asus VG278H and I've seen the H and HE models for around 200-250eur used but VR still seems much more appealing to me. The ghosting free 3D alone has me convinced.

I have only seen 1440p/144hz freesync in person and the difference is pretty dramatic. 60hz seems good enough until you see locked 144hz. Makes a big difference.

That being said, I completely agree it is best to wait it out until VR. I wouldn't consider my DK2 ownership experience as ideal but having tried a near release version of the Vive I have great faith in both HTC/Steam and Oculus.

I haven't tested 144Hz triples, but I did test a single ROG Swift for a few weeks. You're right, it is a dramatic difference, but it's just moar better, a luxury. I feared going back to my 60Hz screens would be jarring, but it wasn't at all.

I originally went down this road with my 21:9. I already had one of these 1680x1050 monitors sitting in a closet, so I bought one more used one ($35!) with hopes to use them as side monitors. This can be done using a program called SoftTH (same guy who made the RBR VR conversion). However! It gets really tricky trying to incorporate monitors with different aspect ratios. I just couldn't get it to "bend" in the right place. I was just too distracting having the world warp. I tried like mad to make it work before I said fuck it, and bought a second used monitor to go with the set. If I had known I was going to end up buying a whole new set of monitors, I would have just bought three decent ones, but c'est la vie.

I can't recall off hand, but I think nVidia provides some driver level flexibility for monitors of different resolutions. but all the same aspect ratio, and ATI does an even more extensive job, but the 21:9 was just too much of a monkey wrench. It's now my fourth monitor set up on a desk of it's own.

Making a "Stefano has a 2016 breakdown" article is moronic; to then take aim at Reiza, most recently for its use of third party plugins, is beyond ridiculous.

PRC have asserted that by using publicly available third party plugins, Reiza have violated the T&C's of their public funding drive & have sent an investigation query to the funding website. In a response to another article, Renato of Reiza states all authors of plugins/mods have been paid for their work if they're used in SCE or AMS.

One needs to bear in mind nearly all who've given money (FWIW I'm level 5) don't have an issue with what Reiza have are doing based off feedback on RD yet PRC admit to raising their T&C query without giving a cent during the funding period.

That'll be tricky. The rubber grips on the clamp go back about 4 inches from the front of a desk/table when mounted (at least with my TX, seems to have the same mounting system though) and it doesn't look like they'll be able to grip anything in the top of your drawer. The clamp is meant for a level flat surface.

You'll have to rig something up I think!
 
Just purchased Project Cars, and I'm really excited to try it out. Have heard many things about it, and it seems to be popular. I have also had Assetto Corsa for a while but haven't known how to play it properly. Now I just need a wheel.

They're a bunch of clowns, frankly. They kinda flew under my radar for a bit - I enjoyed some of their "normal" write-ups and submissions a while back. The depths to which they're reaching for cheap controversy is pathetic, not to mention malicious. Bitter ex-fans with an axe to grind are nothing new, but seriously these are ~$40 games at the end of the day. I wonder what'd be the reaction if Kunos and Reiza shipped their 1.0s in a box and pissed off.

As terrible says, the clamp really wants a flat surface. It can hook around a small bump (I guess about 10mm), but unfortunately yours has a significant obstacle there. If you can position (glue?) a block of wood exactly level (or marginally shallower) than that beam, it should work, and presumably wouldn't interfere with the drawer. Difficult to make an illustration with that crazy perspective, but I had a go:

I'm a bit concerned how thick the thing is overall though... hard to estimate in the first picture (can you measure it?), but it looks like your G27 is near the limit of its clamping distance. I tried making my desk thicker with a couple of books, and it was ok with the T300, but I wouldn't want to say for sure!

Welcome Madridista! AC is tough without a wheel. PCARS has better gamepad support imo, and probably the better introduction if you're new to sims. But definitely worth getting a wheel now that you have both!

Some of the early articles were well written and researched and other articles wrote themselves given the attitude of some of the community and developers.

Nowadays its mostly made up controversy caused by antagonistic comments towards developers and waiting for the fireworks and then reporting on their responses like the developers are all arseholes.

None of the current sims are feature complete, we all know this going in, so why complain about it all the time.

The PRC focus on Reiza is both nasty and inane.

I'm thinking that one thick book or two thinner books may work. I don't really have any other way of knowing other than ordering the wheel and seeing if it would work first hand. If not, either return it or spend more money and buy a dedicated racing cockpit. I'd rather not do that though since I play more than just racing sims on this PC.

Yeah that should work but it'll make life much easier if something was permanently lodged there!
 
I think Suzuka Circuit may soon be arriving in rF2. All we have to go on at the moment is this audio clip of a single lap (starting somewhere before Casino Triangle). However, it may just be confirmation bias coming into effect. The only corner that didn't quite sync up for my imagination was turn 1, as I would expect a slight lift before braking... but maybe that's why I'm not an F1 driver?
 
I'm kinda not sure about the AC announcement. It's nice to have content but people have already found eg. the 650S GT3 having 99.9% identical suspension geometry to the MP4-12C. I really doubt it's like that IRL. Same for Mercedes SLS GT3 -> AMG GT3

Have you been reading the PRC blog at all? They did another "investigation" hit piece on AC looking at the exact same thing..

Aris of Kunos stated in his rebuttal that the manufacturer provides 99% of what Kunos need to build the virtual car and they are forced to guess the rest of the data. The reasons provided range from secrecy to vehicle homologation. Anyone here really believe McLaren or Mercedes have the time or inclination to allow Kunos to comb through their very latest GT cars?

It is easy for anyone with decryption tools to look at the data, compare the numbers and state based on what is found that car X & Y have shared data. Reflect on Aris's comments and the makes sense as to some of the numbers might be similar.

Pull apart the data in iRacing, rFactor 2, P-CARS and any of the isiMotor 2 sims and you'll find data that is copy and pasted, fudged or incomplete. This is before the developers start doing their Balance of Performance fettling!

I cannot explain why an Audi R8 and Lamborghini GT3 car share similar information but I do not claim to be an expert in vehicle parameters for Kunos made software. I can understand why certain data is similar thanks to Aris and the work the Sector 3 people do.
 
IIRC Audi owns Lamborghini, plus they're both rear engine V10s with pretty much the same chassis and drive train architecture.

Makes sense if the GT500 car is complete. Suzuka is one of the more expensive track licences so it'll be a great addition to rF2 if this pans out like you believe.

Did you see the shader work done to the Nurburgring on SRFL's Facebook page? I'm unsure if it's the AC rip or the scratch made track however the changes looked very nice.

We both know Audi owns Lambo and that two models are based around a shared platform however it appears this fact has been completely forgotten by the people who want to discredit Kunos and Assetto Corsa.

I expect it'll be called Mie-ken Circuit or something else local, as I'm not sure if ISI will splash out on the license... which raises the question, is Auto Mobilista's Suzuka official?

It looks superb, but it's probably an AC rip though sadly, as DJCruicky doesn't seem to have any major updates in the pipeline for his version :(

I was stunned when certain brands were confirmed to be in the works; only one brand has been a hold out apparently.

Sector 3 have a backlog of licences however they keep them to themselves until its time to test. For example, we beta testers only knew about the NSU TT just before testing started.
