PC to PS3 Media Streaming (DLNA) Thread

As far as the folders like I was talking about ... here's an example.

The server sends the PS3 pictures in the following folders

All

Calender - this has subfolders of all and the year. The year then has all and month

Disk Location - this allows you to actually search through your PC

File Type - this has subfolders by file type. Within each folder is subfolders off all, and then resolution ... file size, etc.

Highly Rate - you must have to tag this

Last 10 Days

Last 30 Days

Last Year

Most Viewed

No Keyword

People/Places/Events

Small Images

Year/Genre/Comment

I haven't even looked through half of those yet. This thing is sick. The pictures do take a little longer to load into folders versus Nero (which seems fast to me, but maybe there is a pre-cache option somewhere in this too) ... but the layout is SOOOOO much better.

If they can get this thing really going, I'm buying it for audio and pics.

Has anyone gotten internet radio to work with TVersity? I set up a URL in the server, and it is showing up on the PS3 as an MP3 (as expected) ... however, it won't play.

The PS3 goes to the visualizer when I play it ... sits there for a while, and then kind of just sits there.

Hmm..first impressions with TVersity with that new patch are very good. Transcodes my HD stuff now fine, albeit to a smaller resolution. Seems a bit faster overall too, and switches between videos a lot more reliably.

Have those green bars though..but I'm sure that'll be easy for them to fix. If they add some thumbnails, that'd be very cool.

Gonna go experiment with the transcoding to see how high i can get the output resolution before it stops being realtime.

edit - also asides from those green bars, it seems colours sometimes are 'misaligned', for want of a better description. If they can fix that, this would potentially be very cool.

edit 2 - and no delays with mp3s! Unlike nero.

This might be my new favourite solution..very promising indeed.

Hmm..I just got the 1up Yours feed working with it! The episodes show up, and they start playing immediately for me.

I'm trying some video feeds now..if they work, that'd be super cool. The first I tried doesn't seem to work though (reuters top news).

I'm messing around with Media Center 12, but I can't get my mp3s to show up as a supported format.

Does Media Center 12 do any transcoding for the shared video or is it strictly what the file type is.

I finally got my new harddrive up, so I've been playing around with this. So far there aren't any freeware transcoders, right?

Anybody know what the mp3 sort order is?

Righty, Tversity does the job a lot better than Nero does. Trancoding is much more editable ( resolution, compression ) which does flow better with the wireless network.

Still one problem, how do you enable Xvid under Tversity !

I'm talking about Internet Radio (listed as Audio URL), which is different from feeds I think. For example, http://wber-ice-encoder.monroe.edu:80/wber-high.mp3

Can you post a link to the 1up Yours feed though ... I'd like to verify it is working on my setup.

Sure:

http://www.1up.com/flat/Podcasts/podcasts.xml

I'll try that URL just to see if it works on mine.

I got another reuters audio feed working fine too. I tried adding a youtube video feed, though, and it doesn't even show up at all (unlike another i tried, which at least shows up, but then says it can't find any titles).

I tried increasing the output resolution..800x600 seemed to work OK for a 720p divx avi I tried, but it seemed to not be OK for some other vids. One nicer thing about TVersity is, though, that it doesn't lose synch with audio if there's stuttering..it'll just stop the video until it's ready to go on. There might be more room for optimisation with this too..I haven't changed anything except output resolution.

WHY THE HELL CAN'T I TRANSCODE ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll try to make this as coherent as possible, but i've been messing around with this all morning/afternoon and i'm pissed! Especially since i've read every post in this thread and i've installed every damn codec and program necessary.

First up, WMP 11...works fine for pics and music, but obviously very limited video playback. Btw, is there any way to add new shared folders without it having to re-scan every folder that was already listed? Takes way too long just to add a new folder.

Then I tried Nero MediaHome...I already had a nero suite installed from my NEC DVD burner I got last year, and it has Nero MediaHome as part of nero digital. I didn't realize that until i tried to install the nero CE thing onix(i think) posted. Anywho, my version is different from the one talked about in this thread, even though when i tried to install the new version, it said it detected the version i had already and was updated it. It still looks the same as it did before, and claims to be version 1.3.0.4. I don't see "Nero Scout" anywhere. Here's what it looks like:

Nero.jpg

And it doesn't do any transcoding...the only thing that plays are stuff that i've already encoded to .mp4 using the PS3 setting with the "SUPER" program, and it only does that if i specify "Nero Digital/MPEG-4". If I have it at auto-detect, and try to play an mp4 file, it won't play. So apparently all I can do is pass on an mp4 file to the PS3, and only if i specify the "Nero Digital/MPEG-4" option. WHY THE HELL DOESN'T TRANSCODING WORK? I mean, 720p mp4 playback of all of my mp4 files(a bunch of gametrailer vids from gamers day that i re-encoded) work great over my wireless connection, with bitrates between around 3-6mbps, but why the hell doesn't it transcode?

As for TVersity, it just seems funky to me...i don't like it's interface, but beyond that IT HASN'T PLAYED A SINGLE F**ING FILE! How the hell do you use this program? I'm on 0.9.10.2 with the PS3 patch, but NOTHING WORKS!

After basking in all of the great 1.80 features the past few days, this DLNA shit is really frustrating me! Prior to this my only "home network" experience was with my old Tivo series 2 and using the Tivo Desktop to stream photos, vids, and mp3s...that worked like a damn charm.

OK, that was interesting...my 720p divx 300 trailer played back perfectly with TVersity :) I'm pretty amazed, because nero couldn't transcode that for crap. OK, I'll admit, there was a tiny bit of brief stutter right at the end of the trailer, but otherwise it was perfect. And I have a bunch of apps open on my PC right now too (with only 512MB of RAM), so it was hardly ideal conditions.

This is really promising..I still haven't changed any of the other transcoding settings, just changed the max output resolution to 1280x720.

Still can't get that url to work though. It actually doesn't play right in Firefox either ... but works fine in a media player (Media Center 12 play it fine).

It shows PS3 as a specific device in the drop-down list, but it did that before anyway (when you could use tversity for media browsing through the web browser IIRC). I leave it on auto anyway.

I tried a different audio URL from that one you posted Onix (a 1up Yours direct link), and it worked fine :)

I managed to get the StarCraft 2 Gameplay video (avi/dvix) to work by unchecking the Decoding Speed option. Didnt work with that checked.

TVersity is indeed the best solution atm.

Changed the setting so it would optimise for speed instead of quality, and my 720p MGS4 WMV played back fine. Going to try a few other types..

This is really cool though :) Best results I've had by far.

The CE version of MediaHome is an older version. I don't believe it supports the correct version of MPEG 4, as it didn't even exist back then. I'm guess this version and the PS3 are having some sort of hand-shaking issue regadring MPEG4, and MediaHome is mistakenly allowing incorrect MPEG4 to get sent to the PS3.

The current version is 2.5.13.0, and is available if you download the Nero 7 Ultimate Trial. I just installed it, but am having some problems. I'll see if I can hack through it.

You may want to consider getting the newest version of TVersity and downloading the PS3 patch for it. It is really pretty damn good ... especially for video!!!

Does anyone know how to get the video thumbnails to work for Nero? None of my videos are doing this :(

Also, do any of these server send over album art? If so, how do you do it?

Thanks

After my rant, it finally decided to play some videos, but ONLY the same mp4s that were working with Nero MediaHome...and on top of that, they take FOREVER to start playing, unlike the quick response time with Nero...it seems to be caching to the PS3 first and the starts streaming, i dunno. Why is the response time so slow, and why can't I transcode anything...not a single WMV file works and I can't for the flippin' life of me figure out why if i'm using the same damn program and same damn PS3 as everyone else! *goes kick something nearby* What settings should I use? I already changed the maximum resolution limit to 1280x720...

At any rate, thanks for the reply.

If only someone were to make a UPnP/DLNA plug-in for foobar2k, I'd be in heaven. It would fill my need for an audio transcoding/streaming server.

And even if I said I gave up, I still tried the new TVersity patch: transcoding videos still do not work for me =/ Screen goes black, 1 - 2 minutes pass and then I get an error message. I really don't understand why, but it is surely something with my PC.

BTW - I got FLAC working!!

I didn't realize my ffdshow was missing the necessary filters (illiminable) even though it actually had the decoder installed.

So awesome!!! It automatically converts to PCM ... and sounds fantastic!!!! :)

Too bad I can't get radio urls to work though :(

I use Windows Media Connect and the PS3 found it, and I allowed it access via WMC yet when I browse to it via the PS3 (and yes I'm doing it correctly :p) it says there are no files. WTF?

Argh! I can't get that to work for me! It does the same thing it does for video, only instead of a black screen I get the music visualizer (doing nothing) and after 1 or 2 minutes I get the media server connection refused yaddayadda.

What am I doing wrong ?! Is it because I'm using the stable version for illiminable filter?

EDIT: OMG finally got it to work using the unstable version.. altho now I'm getting errors on the pc when using the calculator application so... ><

I noticed when you use nero mediahome that the ps3 shows all the scout directory dirs while the 360 only shows the proper movie, photo, music dir. They need to patch nero to remove all those unwanted dirs from the ps3 interface.

BTW - that's been fixed in the new patch.

The only thing I don't like is the pictures by date doesn't break it up into year folders. Otherwise, it's pretty decent ... and a HUGE improvement.

This may help you. Tversity was crashing on me every time I tried to access a video file on PS3 & X360. After messing around, I finally got them both to work.

Here's how:

1) uninstall all the codecs on your machine, including Nero with it's built in codec.

2) reboot

3) install the latest version of the k-lite mega codec pack. Follow guide below to install the codec. It's a X360 guide, but you only interested in getting FFDShow to be main rendering codec.

http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/Xbox_360_DivX_XviD_Playback_Guide_page2.html

4) download and install tversity (apply PS3 patch)

5) startup tversity.

6) Try to view video on PS3.

They are working on DNLA support.

I don't believe so.

Yeah I saw it and it didn't explain anything. It was just you talking about your experience with the product - not how to set it up properly for MP3's to work.

Basically I need to know what options to set for the server. Always convert audio? Encoder type - and the checklist (receiver option)

Okay ... either later today or tomorrow, I should be receiving a beta version of J Audio Media Center 12 that includes some PS3/DNLA updates. They are trying to get MP3's working with it first.

MediaCenter 12 is a UPnP server (amongst many other awesome things), though there actually are some differences between standard UPnP and the DNLA version. Hence, it is busted on PS3 right now.

What I'm saying is that is doesn't work right now. Supposedly they are working on a patch so it will be DNLA compliant. There first test will be a beta for MP3 support ... I'm hoping they will send me a copy to test.

OK, after the last patch TVersity is finally usable. Its deffo the best free streaming program for use with PS3, and most problems that people still have is due to missing/conflicting codecs. If anyone have time to write a step-by-step guide to make some particular codecs working with it, I'll gladly include it in the first post. I suppose things like lossless WMA and FLAC would be of particular interest in audio department, and MKV/XVid (HD, when/if possible) for video.

Such a stupid question but I'm gonna grow some balls I don't have and toss it out there anyway: do you have to have an ethernet cable or a USB cable in order to transfer data from the PC to PS3? I've been assuming an ethernet cable, but when I try that nothing happens and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm just using the wrong type of cable.

Please note I've never really looked into stuff like this before. Total n00b here when it comes to this.

If you run VOBs through VLC wizard and convert it to .ps (save as .mpg), the audio works (thanks mrklaw!)

The VOB I used was with DD2.0, so I can't confirm 5.1 ... but signs point to yes :)

I do.

You can't connect peer-to-peer using a standard ethernet cable. You need something that's called a crossover cable. It looks like a standard cat5, but is wired differently inside.

I haven't tested to see if it will work, though I don't see why it wouldn't.

I'm a little confused though ... exactly how do you get your PC and PS3 online if you don't have a router?

whats the trick with getting Tversity working? It shows up in my PS3, I think it once streamed a PSP format video, but then started giving me 'media server access denied' when I tried Divxes etc.

Is there something I can use on the PC side to check codecs etc?

Try this with the Dvix

- Settings > Transcoder > Go all the way down and uncheck the "Decode the media as fast as possible..." option

- Also set the video resolution to 1280 x720.

This worked for me.

If possible, can you do another test? In the XMB, go Audio / Tversity Audio Guide ... and then try out some of the radio stations.

None of them are working for me :(

No luck with your URL, but I got a different one working (a direct link to a 1up Yours mp3). The radio stations in the audio guide don't seem to work for me either.

If podcasts work, and (some) URLs work, I'd think it should be possible for them to get those radio stations working..(?)

Besides, where is the built in RSS feeds support for the PS3? Really strange there isn't one, yet the PSP got it ages ago.

For Linux users: http://mediatomb.cc/news

We got a lot of feedback from PS3 users, they reported issues when trying to stream MP3 and MPEG4 files from MediaTomb to the Playstation. We were able to identify and fix the MP3 streaming problem and we will also try to master the MPEG4 issue, thanks to everyone who supported us by testing and by providing valuable debug information.

We will try to bring out a new release containing PS3 compatibility within the coming days.

There's also discussion of PS3 support in VLC here:
