PC to PS3 Media Streaming (DLNA) Thread

brandonh83 said:
Such a stupid question but I'm gonna grow some balls I don't have and toss it out there anyway: do you have to have an ethernet cable or a USB cable in order to transfer data from the PC to PS3? I've been assuming an ethernet cable, but when I try that nothing happens and I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm just using the wrong type of cable.

Please note I've never really looked into stuff like this before. Total n00b here when it comes to this.
if you have a wired/wireless router and IF your router is close enough to run a cat 5 cable to then hardwire your PS3. If not then use wireless to be able to see your PC and such.

Wireless isn't so good for streaming HD content because of latency issues. So ethernet cable is your BEST bet.

Try this with the Dvix

- Settings > Transcoder > Go all the way down and uncheck the "Decode the media as fast as possible..." option

- Also set the video resolution to 1280 x720.

This worked for me.

Nope, still no Divx or Xvid transcoding ... The PS3 keeps giving me the "datatype not supported" message...

Well Windows Media Player 11 shares out the music, but since alot of my mp3s aren't tagged correctly, its a clusterf0x of music out of order, not in alphabetical, its a nightmare. I haven't even tried streaming video, but I do notice that sometimes I get the infamous media center denied error, even though everything is the way it should be setup and all traffic passes.

I hope some of the software that evolves from this update is better than the options we have right now :D

Ok I was able to share the TVersity server and access it through the PS3 (just had to set it up on the windows firewall) now I still can't seem to get my videos that aren't MPG2 to play. I get the message:

"Access to the media sever has been denied. check the settings for the media server."

EDIT: IT works now, I don't know what I did but restarting the computer works now I get almost all the vids I have (not that I have much). Sweet! I get the green bar on the right side for some vids though.

I used Mp3Tag about a year ago to tag all my mp3's correctly. It works fairly well and is freeware. You can just have it convert file names to tags or it can retrieve information from CDDB or Amazon for complete album info, etc.

No luck with your URL, but I got a different one working (a direct link to a 1up Yours mp3). The radio stations in the audio guide don't seem to work for me either.

If podcasts work, and (some) URLs work, I'd think it should be possible for them to get those radio stations working..(?)

One of the mods/devs mentioned that it was a known PS3 issue with TVersity that they're working on.

What's weird though, is that he seemed to think the audio guide stuff should run from the GUI on the PC though (the library tab is a Flash-based media player). I can't get it to run there though.

If you have the chance, try running some of the audio guide links from the library tab on your PC and tell me what happens.

I have all the tags correct on my mp3s, but things are still showing up out of order. Does anybody know what order it's using? I don't want to have to create playlists for all of my albums.

I accidentally blocked my PS3 from getting my shared media from my PC and I have no clue how to unblock it.

I blocked it from my PC when it asked me if I wanted to let this "new device" access my media. I actually forgot I was updating my PS3 and blocked it thinking it was a neighbor or something :lol what a tard.

Anyway, can anyone help?

I've noticed that you share too much music in WMP11, the whole thing just doesn't work. Try to limit the number of shared MP3s to under 1000 and control them through playlists.

Hmm... Assuming you are using WMP 11, go to Library -> Media Sharing. This will bring up a window that will show your devices as icons, with some buttons and what not. Highlight your PS3 and then click the Allow button. This will change its icon to have a green check mark by it, instead of a red circle w/slash icon.

TVersity works well for me now. Almost everything I have plays now, but remember to update your codecs if something won't load during transcoding. At first all my xvid shows would display inverted despite playing fine in VLC locally on my comp but updating to the
latest XViD codec solved that. Don't assume that just because a video plays fine on your computer that you have a workable codec for transcoding, especially if you're like me and have numerous players and codec packs floating around on your comp.

Transcoding seems to work well, it at least appears to be a bit less of a strain on my comp than it was on my 360, which (if I'm not imagining it) would likely be due to improvement on TVersity and updating the codecs.

How did you make Xvid to work in the first place? They never did to me (inverted or not) and they still dont after updating the codecs.

When I try to run an Xvid file, my PS3 will go black for a couple of mins and then report an error with the media server or something.

I use TVersity too.

So is Nero MediaCentre or whatever, still the best solution to try and get Divx/xvid streaming to the PS3?

After trying both, Tversity is better, but it's a pain in the ass to get working. Nero Media Center worked right when I tried it. Below is my reply to another poster of how I got Tversity to work.

This may help you. Tversity was crashing on me every time I tried to access a video file on PS3 & X360. After messing around, I finally got them both to work.

Here's how:

1) uninstall all the codecs on your machine, including even Nero with it's built in codec.

2) reboot

3) install the latest version of the k-lite mega codec pack. Follow guide below to install the codec. It's a X360 guide, but you only interested in getting FFDShow (prefer for Tversity) to be the only rendering codec.

http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/Xbox_360_DivX_XviD_Playback_Guide_page2.html

4) download and install tversity (apply PS3 patch)

5) startup tversity.

6) Try to view video on PS3.

You probably have a codec issue. Suggest you follow what I wrote above to uninstall and reinstall it appropriately.

Hmm, I wonder if having a certain player loaded helps? I have VLC, Zoom and I think something else installed.

A lot of the bullshit you have to go through to get this to work I did for my 360, and I don't remember what I did. You might want to find Gspot and scan a media file that isn't working, it should tell you if you're missing a codec. But from the sounds of it, you aren't... let me poke around in my options and see if I can remember anything. Here's what I can remember doing today after applying the TVersity patch....
- had to set Media Playback Device to PS3 instead of Auto in TVersity or it wouldn't find shit
- specified 'Connection Speed and QUality' in TVersity based on my wired setup. Not sure what that would do. I think all other options in Transcoding are the defaults.

TVersity is streaming my mp3s and videos well (I just started [Eclipse] Claymore - 06 (XviD) [DB5ABE8C].avi randomly and, while a bit dark on my TV, is working fine) but it does give me a "server not found" error every so often. It's odd, I just retry the same file and then it works...

Needless to say, streaming MP4s works the best, without any of the hassles of transcoding. I think I'll keep reencoding files I want to watch more than once to MP4s and keep them on the PS3 HDD, but transcoding is a nice option for stuff I just d/l to watch once then delete.

Don't think it makes a difference since Tversity uses whatever codec is by default on your computer. Won't hurt if you uninstall and reinstall it.

Ok I got it all working on TVersity I think but is there any help for studdering? I've got a fast enough Core 2 Duo processor so maybe it's the network that's slowing it down? The PS3 is connected via wire and the laptop is wireless G.

What settings should I have on TVersity to optimize this?

If this works it will be the best media solution out there. With this update it jumped up and slapped the 360 in the face - it has better fastforwarding and resumes where you left off. Hopefully by the end of this year it will be able to match point by point all the 360 features and I can finally cancel the XBL service.

First off, thanks for trying to help(and Onix and others) :)

There's been "some" progress

Ok, I tried my best to uninstall as many codecs as I could(either via the program's own uninstall option, or via windows add/remove programs). Then I installed the k-lite mega pack and installed it per the guide.

As of now, mp4s stream perfectly(they already did, but now the start up time is quick)...my WMVs now FINALLY transcode to mpeg1, including the 720p HD WMV vids from gametrailers...however my divx and xvids(not that i have a lot, but still), do not work. However, I downloaded a .divx spiderman 3 trailer from stage6, and changed the extention to .avi, and it worked...according the virtualdub, the codec is XviD MPEG-4...which is the same as what it says for the other random xvids i have(tv show torrents)...but those don't work. However, when I open up those torrent xvids using virtualdub, it complains about an improper VBR audio stream...could that be the cause of the transcoding f**k up?

I'd mainly want my Divx stuff to work...there was a time a few years ago when i encoded a LOT of 320x240 divx videos(think Dreamcast Divx player, which for me was the only way to watch vids from the net on my TV)...and they're all in Divx 4.12, and like 300-500kbps so it's hardly taxing...but for some reason TVersity will not transcode them.

Is there any surefire way to remove any and all divx codecs that might be on my system(like a codec cleanup utility or something) so I can start from scratch and just have ffdshow do the divx transcoding with TVersity(that's how it should go right?). I tried removing it, and other, codecs via the control panel in the video codec list, but when i restart, they all pop right back up again.

God I hate when computers don't work properly!

Looks like the computer is still not using the ffdshow for rendering. You must have miss uninstalling something.

To find out what decoder is currently being used:

1) Click on Windows Start button > All Programs > K-Lite Codec Pack > Tools > Graphedit.

2) In Graphedit, click on File > Render Media File... and select video you are trying to view.

Scroll to the right and see what it says for Video Decoder? If correct, should be ffdshow.

I know it does. But everytime I add something to the library I have to R&R the server in order to see that on the PS3. Also bare in mind that the PS3 itself doesnt seem to refresh properly its folders. I have some new content right now that shows up in All Vidoes but not in Folders. This is because I checked Folders when the new content wasn't already there, but didn't so with Folders.

while you have the ps3 connected to the server, it won't find any new content you add to tversity unless you restart the server, which will make the ps3 to disconnect and to connect again to the server automatically

It says ffdshow :-(

And when I right click on that box and choose "Filter properties", it goes to the ffdshow video decoder properties, and highlighted is "Divx 4/5/6...libavcodec...DIVX, DX50, BLZ0,DXGM"...a couple of torrent files say "XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder" and those properties take me to the screen of the xvid program calder had posted a few posts up that i installed. The Divx files also show up as XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder

*Edit*
Btw, I seem to have a busted Divx codec I can't get rid off...in Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Properties > Hardware > Video Codecs > Properties(phew!), there's Divx 5.01 and Divx 4.12...clicking properties for 5.01 says it couldn't load the driver, the driver file may be missing. When I click on the remove button next to properties(which is what i tried to do earlier when trying to install codecs prior to the k-lite install), it says this divx 5.01 driver is required by the system(why?), the system may not work properly if i remove it...are you sure you want to remove it? When I click yes, it disappears from the codec list, but when i exit and go back, it comes up again >_<

Wait. I am confuse from what you wrote. In Graphedit, what encoder is used for Divx / Xvid files you open? FFDshow or Xvid MPEG-4?

For busted the Divx codec, have you tried reinstalling and uninstalling them? If you can't find the older versions, maybe try installing the latest release, and then, uninstalling it.

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/

Should do the same with Xvid. I am guessing you don't know which program it's correctly associated with. Tried installing official, and then, uninstalling it.

http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

Afterward, uninstalling K-Lite Mega codec pack, reboot, and then, reinstall the K-Lite Mega codec pack.

Many people have the wrong assumption about putting device in DMZ means it's outside / bye passing the router. Your router still handles some incoming / outgoing issues which could still give people problems. If DMZ doesn't seem to be working, try port forwarding.

If that fails too, new router is probably in order. They are only around $50. I am using Netgear WGT624. Didn't have to do anything, like DMZ & port forwarding, for the PS3 / X360 to work.

the 360 and ps3 works fine. I just had NAT3 on PS3 and i tossed it on DMZ to get it to NAT2.

Regardless, nether (360 nondmz, ps3 dmz) are finding the media now.

The most frustrating part of this whole thing is that Sony could EASILY just release a "Universal Transcoder" utilizing the power of the cell and it would literally convert a .xvid movie in about 2 minutes. Yes, I know they are also a movie studio and have to protect that IP, but I really doubt they think people are streaming over home movies.
