PD0's Joanna!?

Maybe not THE anime look, but something like it. It is very similar to TimeSplitter's graphics, and that's what people who have seen it likened it to. It's also the exact same thing they did for the N64 game. Have the in-game model look one way, and then use a real woman who looks similar for the adverts and promo things.

To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me much if she graced the cover of the box, though Rare seem to be in an artwork-friendly mode for their boxes lately. So that's just total speculation on my part.

I am now very limp.

But to be fair, this other style in-game could also look nice. I was just hoping for realistic graphics...

I remember what I said - the girl in the picture is Joanna Dark. Just because I haven't seen the game doesn't mean I don't know that that's her. Which it is. :)

Well when he made that comment,MacD said "Hey you, don't use logic" or something like that,so it makes it look even more possible =\

Timesplitters graphical style is garbage, please don't resemble it in anyway :(

Huh, I really like the TS graphical style. If they could up the polys in that game it would be pretty amazing I think.

Different strokes...

Fuck, I should have listened to MarkMacD and not said anything further. :lol

Though I guess you could call this doing ou a favor. I'm either

A) Double-bluffing, making you all think it's the anime look so you'll be wowed once again in 2 days

or

B) Keeping you guys grounded in reality, so your hopes aren't flying around in the sky with the idea of a photoreal Joanna, only to be smashed to bits when you see she's the anime look

Whichever one you pick, you can all start thanking me in two days. :lol

Perfect Dark was great gameplay and great new ideas ruined by a horrible framerate

Yup. It's amazing how much was in that game. Deathmatch Multiplayer with tons of options. Coop Multiplayer. Multiplayer where the second player would take control over random AI to fight against the first player during the story mode. Vehicles. Lots of weapons with gadget-like secondary fire. Disarm maneuver and the ability to shoot weapons out of guards hands. All on top of GoldenEye's objective based style and interaction with NPCs throughout the levels. Really interested to see what they came up with on a system that can finally handle all that crap

Nah... the guys that played the game on MTV said it was somewhere in between Halo and CS, so I doubt it'll be anime.

Might not be going for the very realistic look though.

People actually think this is how the game looks???
I believe that model is rendered in realtime with shaders, and not painted or pre-rendered.

Look at the hair, strands are not rendered individually (and even if they are, Nalu demo did that too). It looks more like a large number of poygons with alpha clumped together. As for the face, it's not unbelievable. Great texture art can do so much to make something appealing (just look at SH3 cutscenes, and imagine that kind of texture artist working on a hardware so much more powerful). A lot of that picture is concealed making it tougher to figure out, though.

looks like 2d concept art or a heavily retouched render to me. whether there's an in-game model under there somewhere, i dunno. looks nice, anyway. redheads are great.

I just want one thing out of PD, objectives, good ones like in GE 007. That's why I like FPS's, not just mindlessly killing baddies for the whole game, I want to manipulate the environment to accomplish missions. Considering how Rare's usual FPS's go, I'm pretty sure it'll be like that, but there's no way to know yet...the lack of popularity of objective based FPS's might screw it up for me :(

I want my next-gen GE 007 in PD.

Just because the environments look like something out of Halo doesn't mean the characters in them aren't anime-looking. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect has realistic looking levels but the characters are anything but. (A whale?)

Plus, the people playing it at the MTV event aren't going to be seeing much of Joanna, as that's who they're looking through the eyes of. Any guards in any kind of armour, no matter what the style (Save for full-blown celshading) can look like it's from Halo or Counter Strike.

Remember, the anime style isn't full-blown, cartoon, Wind Waker celshading. It's a very subtle effect, akin to Pikachu's celshading in Smash Bros Melee.

Lastly, those MTV guys are on crack. Celshaded or photoreal, this is a Rare game on some seriously powerful hardware, having been in development for over four years. This game isn't going to look somewhere in between Halo and CS.

Well, I haven't seen the game so I'm merely speculating. The people were playing multiplayer, I believe, so they'd be looking at different models, and this would definitely give a glimpse of the style Rare's using for their characters. As for it being between Halo and CS, I believe they meant style-wise. I am certain the game will look a lot better than those games.

Another reason the Halo/CS thing doesn't jive with me is because, this is Rare. Halo and CS are incredibly generic looking. (I don't care how great they are, art-wise it just doesn't get any more plain then a space marine in a suit of armour) I can't imagine Rare putting something as dull looking as Halo or CS out. Rare games have a style all of their own, which is why the "It looks like a very pretty Timesplitters" makes SO much more sense.

Say whatever you will about their gameplay, Rare games have a very distinctive look when compared to anything else.

This game isn't going to look somewhere in between Halo and CS.

I'm pretty sure they meant style-wise, I doubt that the actual graphics quality could be so low for a next gen game by Rare. Say that with me, RARE, the make some of the best looking games period. I expect to be blown away with PDZero. Hell look at what they did with Xbox1 with Conker, PD0 will not dissapoint from such a talented dev house (well, at least when it comes to graphics).

they meant it in the same way you meant when you said it looked like timesplitters (without you actually seeing it.).

style wise. but they actually *saw* it.

So I don't feel totally crazy for saying the same thing on page 3. I too think it looks like polys with alpha blend layered to give the appearance of a bunch of strands clumped together. I gave the example of Reiko's hair in the RR5 into. It moves around a bit, but it's certainly not individual strands. It's just a lot of alpha polys being layered. I'm not saying this is definitely an in-game model. None of us know that, but if there was a next-gen face demo or something, this should be cake. It's honestly what I'm expecting from the next-gen, and in-game...all IMO. Maybe I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but like last gen, this gen should use polygon budgets that used to be dedicated to an entire scene on just a single character. PLUS the shaders are gonna be off the chain. If in-game doesn't approach the CG from some of this gen's games, then something's wrong. It's becoming cliche, but were's talking about a couple of orders of magnitude increas in power here. PEACE.

TimeSplitters, Halo, CounterStrike? Yuuuck! I'm not liking the sound of this.

People don't sound wowed by the graphics.

Red hair = good

Hehe... 'Red Hair is better' is a Michael Giacchino track on the Alias soundtrack, and what with them 'borrowing' the father named Jack etc etc... still, I shoudn't be too harsh on the ol' PDZ designers... Alias borrowed the red wig thing from Run Lola Run...

Also: The gun looks sliiightly like a MagSec, I guess.

We get it. You're drilling in the point that I haven't seen it. I think people understand that now thanks to your help.

Just because I haven't seen it for myself doesn't mean I don't know what it looks like, though. Maybe I just act stupid to give you guys the runaround in typical Rare fasion. Or maybe I am stupid. (Just wait for all the "IAWTP" posts quoting that.) We'll all see it in two days.

I'm the image consultant Rare's hired to update Joanna's look for the year 2005. The first thing I got rid of was her cliched rag of sexy brunette hair in favour of something a little more along the lines of "2005 winner of Sweden's hair comp, open."

Not only does it make you practically invisible when hunting a foreign diplomat in an exotic bird sanctuary, its sharp enough to decapitate enemies and pick locks when worst comes to worst.

Is there room for one more in this fight? Because I think she's pretty ugly too.

I'm actually surprised I didn't get chewed out for asking for that shot of dogface [Cindy Crawford, now that I've finally remembered her name] a few pages back be taken down.

Cindy Crawford's a dog face?

Wow.....just....wow.

You got some insane standards dude. IN-SANE.

Ok, maybe not UGLY, but she's not anything special in my eyes. I don't get the love for her. She's not even "normal" or "girl next door" looking, she's like, a little under normal. Boring, even.

13 Going On 30? How hilarious is the bit in the trailer where the little girl remarks, "That's a nice dress." and she replies, "Thanks, it's because I have these great boobs to fill it out!" and then clutches at her flat chest.

:lol

Edit: I have NEVER been able to see why people think Cindy is hot. NEVER. Ever since I was a child and I saw some poster of her in a book store I have thought she was ugly. It likely has something to do with that hidious blemish on her face, but even when you cover it up, the rest of her doesn't look that special either. I've always just chalked it up to having bad taste since EVERYONE ELSE AND THEIR MOTHER think she's so fucking gorgeous, but there are plenty of other women I think are hot and others agree on, so I think it's just this one thing that I'm "out of whack" on.

Oh hey, I'm far and away from an oil painting. I'm just an average joe in the looks department. But it's like, "I may not know art, but I know what I like!" and I don't like Cindy Crawford. :(

I also don't like pie, which is something else the whole fucking world seems to love. I guess there's just something wrong with me.

WHY CAN'T I BE NORMAL MOMMY?

Heh, actually, I'm not an oil painting, I'm a pen and ink drawing. My avatar is a picture of myself. :lol

Wait, what, someone said Cindy Crawford is ugly?

I would have thought evolution would have weeded those types out by now. :lol

You look like Ham from The Sandlot.

Love that movie.

Damn you WordAssasin!

Heh, yeah and cool concept art to match, but what does it really matter anyway... no one seems to have mentioned the fact that it's a First-Person shooter, so you won't even see the face even if it were in-game (which it's not - although, why are there no shadows cast from her hair strands?). Erm, unless they have fab bathroom mirrors.
I guess everyone's just glad to have seen a 'realistic' Jo, although how crushed will everyone be if it's not so real come Thursday?

Yeah, the more I look at it, it looks a bit flat on the right hand side because the hair isn't casting any shadows. So perhaps it *could* even be in-game.

The smoke looks wicked though; if it's semi-stylised like that in-game it'd be class.

How come we've not even heard anything about it from someone who either played it, or saw it from a distance at the actual event? That gamertag radio could have done with someone who's actually played a Rare game before.

I'm telling you, this is what Joanna Dark will look like when she's attending a high class party for the recently crowned Princess of Ukraine. You can hide a lot of espionage shit in that hair.

Yeah no shit, look at her she has knives in her hair. :lol

So what do you guys think of the supposed story, I think it sounds pretty neat.

A secret war has begun - between shadowy corporations bent on world domination. Joanna Dark and her father Jack are caught up in the fight for the future of the planet. A routine bounty hunting mission rips open a global conspiracy that will change Joanna's destiny - forever.
