Joanna Dark actor asks fans to call for Perfect Dark to be saved

Fucking hell, if they had modeled the in-game Joanna to the actress..

Maybe the feedback metrics from the trailer would have kept the fucking game alive!
They simply don't know how to display power and femininity at the same time. Look at the photo in the OP, they're just going for the classic strong chin and camera from below shoulders angled upwards trick, used to display dominance and power in art, movies, comics, and games.

Problem is, most women are shorter than men so it becomes weird for most of us. Is she extremely tall? If not, who's looking at her from that angle? If they're going with that strategy they need to push the femininity buttons harder. There are a million examples how to sell a female main character better than what they're doing there.

But whatever, the gameplay looked cool. I wanted to play it.

Hopefully Crystal Dynamics can make their own version of it, call it something else, different story and character name. FROM did that with Dark Souls when they wanted to go multiplat when Sony owned the Demon's Souls IP. It shouldn't have to end with MS pulling the plug.

The only way it would survive now is if the original developers came back formed somewhat of a "team" brought the rights and then took it from there....same as the case is with Deus Ex, some development team would have to buy the rights outright for it...

Rare isn't the rare of the n64 days like naughtydog isn't the people that made crash bandicoot. They both just a corporate entity with replaceable people.

Pretty ridiculous run. Would be impossible to replicate in today's industry. Anyone know what the dev's in those days are doing now?

Different ways. Doak (director for Goldeneye and PD) and Graeme went to create a new studio, Free Radical - kept making bangers like TimeSplitters & Second Sight before the Crytek acquisition.

Another group including Grant Kirkhope (OST for Goldeneye, DK64, Banjo) created Playtonic game. Sadly Yooka-Laylee was pretty trash, but the follow up (Impossible Lair) was very solid.

  • Goldeneye 007
  • Diddy Kong Racing
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Jet Force Gemini
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Perfect Dark
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day
This was in 4 years, 1997-2001.
Blast Corps and Banjo-Tooie were pretty great too. Rare was legendary on the N64! It's depressing how their game output slowed to a trickle since then.

I'm not trying to save GigaChaded women, here. I'm trying to save the feminine ones I want to look at. Again, I'm not paying anything for ugly. Cars, houses, appliances, clothes, prostitutes, nothing is spent on ugly, from anyone.

I'd personally prefer if they just started over and made a proper sequel to Perfect Dark 64 since the game is a fast paced espionage FPS and both Zero and the fake game were much slower paced. I don't think anything really tops it. One of a kind.

Zero only feels like a slower paced game due to the clunky controls.

that's why Zero needs a remaster that overhauls not only the incoherent Artstyle, but also the clunky controls.

It's not the same company at all. Everyone from 90s Rare went on to Free Radical, Playtonic or elsewhere

It's not gonna happen. As special as the game was to me it came out TWENTY-FIVE years ago and the only we got since was a very mediocre sequel.

I'm just glad we were able to get it included in NSO and I can play with my Switch N64 controller.

If I'm really honest, the IP itself wasn't even that special, the team at Rare was. Their N64 run was insane, and imo probably one of the greatest ever on a single system:

  • Goldeneye 007
  • Diddy Kong Racing
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Jet Force Gemini
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Perfect Dark
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day

Yeah and what was the size of Rare at that time? Maybe 50/100? It's insane that games have 400 + teams and still take 5-7+ years to complete, if they even make it out.

True, it would have been better to make the game character more siimlar to this beautiful actress. Seeing the result in the game, I thought they were using one of these other actresses instead:

The AAA teams now are in the thousands, not in the hundreds. Diablo IV has almost 9000 people on its game credits, and Starfield almost 4000.

And yes, AAA take more years and people to be made, because they require way more work to be down now than in previous generations, or specially when compared to the N64 days.

Games are way longer, way more complex, way more full featured and way more detailed. That requires way more work to be done.

If Redfall was deemed "good enough" to release and Perfect Dark was not, I don't think we want it to be saved.
This isn't the first or second round of layoffs. Redfall and its team got axed some rounds before, around a year ago. Meaning they were one of the weakest options they had back then. Back then they didn't shut down Perfect Dark and its team, which means they consider more promising Perfect Dark and its team than Redfall and its team.

A few layoff and closures rounds later, MS wanted to reduce this week their development costs in X millions, and to do so fired a certain amount of people, shutting down some teams and projects, choosing the weakest choices they had available now.

Good Lord, I never actually considered this. That really may be the greatest run of any generation.

I've been shouting about the collapse of Rare's output for years:

I will respond to Jaffe by suggesting that it has everything to do with the business model and there is a very strong example of that: Rare.

Look at Rares output between 1994 and 2001:

Banjo-Kazooie
Killer Instinct
Goldeneye
Donkey Kong Country
Perfect Dark
Conker
Diddy Kong Racing
Battletoads

In 7 years they made all that and I'm not even listing all the sequels or smaller games within those years.

Now look at what Rare has created for MS since 2015 to now. 7 years:

Sea of Thieves
Battletoads

Now you may be asking how does a studio with that kind of output go from one extreme to the other like that. Because their business model changed. They became about GaaS, they became about subs, microtransactions and season passes. It's what they were shaped to be by management and the business model. Just like how xbox 360 avatars were making them a shit load of money too.

Some of the most beloved studios turned into Live service/GaaS husks and nobody was batting an eye.

Do they though? I have to listen to coworkers talk about sports all day and complain the same way people do about something like Bungie.
well, while i'm sure that sports fans disagree with each other, people who follow sports usually know who's on which teams. people who follow video games usually do not, with the exception maybe being one or 2 'stars' (kojima, druckmann, etc). iow, while laker fans might disagree with each other, they all understand that the team now on the court isn't the same one as the one 25 years ago...

The only one that comes to mind that's close is Rockstar on PS2:

  • GTA Trilogy
  • Manhunt 1/2
  • Bully
  • Red Dead Revolver
  • Midnight Club Trilogy
  • GTA LC/VC Stories
You know that there are, at least, five completely different developers being considered here, right?

I'm gonna be hanged for this, but I think most normal men would never actually reject a woman with reboot Joanna's looks.

Like, she really isn't bad looking at all.

the issue is more the pattern of not only that kind of design, but also that often you see western Devs use a face model, but then change her looks to be less feminine.

once you notice this happening over and over, you question the motivation behind it.

I used to sympathise for xbox leadership, then I realized how mismanaged all this shit is and they have essentially infiinite money. I'm pissed. There is so much ip to EASILY tap into.

This was one of the console announcement games. First day out with the new thing and they started right off with scraping the barrel for stuff to show. Bunch of shit that was barely even started. Even halo would be a year off after that humiliation.

Anyway, Senua was years later and a sideshow compared to how they hyped it up. Everwild was a trailer. Fable and perfect dark were title cards. Talking points were that game pass and quick resume were the launch games, basically.

Who knows how much of a game perfect dark ever got to be. How much could have been done when they announced it? What a wreck.

10/10 would wreck again.

Fallacious argument.
That's like if I said a certain NBA player sucked and you telling me that he would crush most people in a game of one and one.

Honestly why bother saving any game series that is owned by these big gaming companies? They have no interest in making anything good. By time the game has been through 100s of committee meetings and had dozens of consultants having their way, all you get is the safest lamest DEI slop. Unless things change, I honestly do not want any of my favorite games having sequels anymore.

With perfect dark you have to bring up developer Rare.

Today a perfect dark game by like Dice (mirrors edge) or IOI (Hitman) or Kojima (Death Stranding) would be super interesting.

honestly, I'd only trust an indy team full of hardcore fans of the IP to make a proper sequel that is true to the spirit of the original.
as soon as you bring the AAA industry into the mix you'll get either watered down shit, or generic copying of other games that are popular.

we'd need the equivalent of what Team Reptile was for Jet Set Radio, but for Perfect Dark... plus maybe a slightly larger budget...
