Perfect Dark Zero multiplayer: most opponents, in console game, ever

More than four years since ace FPS Perfect Dark appeared on the N64, a few details of the latest instalment in the series have emerged.

Microsoft first announced the game, titled Perfect Dark Zero, back in 2002. Since then details and screenshots have been scarce, as in nowhere to be seen, though they did release some character renders of heroine Joanna in a fetching chrome and lycra combo.

Now rumour has it that the reason it's taking so long is cos the game is being saved for the Xbox 360. It's down as a launch day title, apparently, and should be on show at E3 next month.

And what's more, it's going to have an online multiplayer mode which - according to reports - will feature more opponents playing at once than has ever been seen before in a console game.

The storyline is set before the first Perfect Dark title begins, and sees Joanna and her dad, Jack, caught up in a massive conspiracy that links in with the plot of the N64 game.

You'll be able to follow the story in both single-player and co-operative mode, and we're also promised something called 'anti-co-op' - one player takes on the role of Joanna while the other plays as her evil arch enemy, and both set about trying to do each other over.

It's all yet to be confirmed by Microsoft, which was unavailable for comment at the time of writing. And before that. And probably after. But we'll keep you posted.

Yep, interesting...

If old, kill yourself.

Counter-Op was in the original...

Sounds different than counter-op, like you're playing an actual character rather than a body-jumping entity.

This stuff was released in that Xbox.com survey wasnt it?

As such i wouldnt take any of it as final.

Is the record for that 50 players at once? I know the new Delta Force for consoles will have a limit of 50 people playing at once.

That's the highest I've heard of. Doesn't Ghost Recon 2 also support around that many as well?

I dont really see the benefit of having that many people in one game unless they have some freaking huge maps.

This will make me buy the new Xbox (refuse to call it fucking 360 until confirmed!) The original was so far ahead of it's time and really limited by the N64 technology.

Some of the multiplayer maps in the original game were huge and I always thought to myself that some of them would be fantastic for an online deathmatch. I'd really like to see some of the old maps brought back like they did with the Goldeneye maps in Perfect Dark. "Grid" (matrix-inspired level) and Villa were great as were many others but I can't think of their damn names!

The bots, challenge mode, customisation, player tracking stats, were all just great. The only thing that was bad in the original game was the framerate and the story was a bit weak. I honestly think a next gen Perfect Dark would eclipse either of the Halo games by a fair margain.

What if Rare doesn't have 'it' anymore?

It has begun.

I expect major PD0 sploogeage after E3.

Perfect Dark Zero and Halo 3 is the 1-2 punch which will help the Xbox 360 dethrone Sony and become the console with number one market share in NA. PD0 will also make Nintendo regret that they sold off the company.

big team battle already lags to hell in Halo 2 and smaller battles are infintely more fun. I prefer smaller battles!

Before we all get our hopes up, keep in mind they have to release the game first which in Rare's case would be quite a feat in itself, let alone the stuff in the game.

Whoa, when RARE releases a game, it has, and probably will be a very good product (other then SFA :lol), so you cant worry bout that.
